The History- For more than 200 years, the American Flag has been a symbol of freedom to all United States citizens because of all of our ancestors we have a symbol of freedom for our country. On January 1, 1776, the Continental Army was laying siege to Boston which had been taken over by the British Army. George Washington ordered the Grand Union flag hoisted above his camp at Prospect Hill. This flag that they had at the time was between the British and the Americans with the 13 red and white alternate stripes with the British Union Jack in the upper left hand corner. The flag that was on top of Prospect Hill would be one of many flags to be named the American Flag.

A "symbol of our country" means nothing. As someone who took an oath to defend our country (you know the oath) and protect the US constitution of the USA, I see a lot of rhetoric similar to yours used to criminalize flag burning and it is completely unfounded. Burning the US flag is a 1st amendment right of any citizen that feels distressed with where our country and our government is headed. Many people feel the outcome should be different based on personal feelings or closeness to the situation.

What the United States flag means to me is freedom. Freedom of rights. Freedom of speech. But that’s not what it all really means. It means fortitude for those who lose their lives in battle. I respect the flag. What the flag means to me is that I know that there are people out there, Seals, Police force, Army, Marines, and all others fighting to keep us safe here in the U.S. The flag to me symbolises our freedom. And i respect that. How I think of the flag is the way I think of a baby. You must care for it. And also NEVER drop it. Our flag is something that should be respected more, and cared for. People should look at the flag whenever they see it, and think of the people who are in Iran and Iraq, and all over the world fighting.

To me the american flag represents our country and that everyone should be treated with fairness. I also feel that people should be able to say what they want about the flag or use it however they want. Because solders have fought for our rights to choose if we would like to stand or sit. I think that people have their own beliefs on what the flag actually means or represents.

My great uncle was a Marine and my great grandfather was in the Army during WWII. They both served their country and welcomed that flag every single day. They felt the Americans flag characterizes freedom, pride, and fairness. Their flag as well as others stands for freedom because of the many lives that were lost throughout history so we could become the country that we are now. The American flag stands for pride for the reason of many American soldiers’ men and women who lost their lives for us. The American flag represents multiple forms from innocence and purity, while many can associate it to be signifying vigilance and justice. It stands greatly to symbolize America of all the hardships, withstanding through the past and present that would reflect to a certain degree. However, it comes to a point in which people have vouched in different intentions on the American Flag and verbally desecrate the flag as it varies upon their way for freedom of speech. The people who do in a way desecrate the flag must raise their own opinion that can very controversial to others, but not to themselves. The American flag means so many things to me. It represents that our country has strength, power and freedom. We are free land and can go anywhere and no be judge. We can thank our Army, Military, Air Force, etc. We are very blessed and privileged because other counties can even go out of their houses without getting shot. Today the American Flag flies all over the nation. Heroes have died for it and citizens have advanced it. It has brought liberty and prosperity to the American people and it embodies patriotism.
