Dr.Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is a film about what could happen if the wrong person pushed the “button”, It mocks Cold War fears of a nuclear battle between the Soviet Union and the United States. Kubrick’s intension for the movie is to deliver his viewpoint on vague the American conflict with Russia. The whole point of the Cold War was to shock the opposing country into submission by building a stronger nuclear-powered program and intimidating them by saying the Americans will put it to use. This fear is the base of Kubrick’s film, and is included when the President is eager to let one of the Air Force’s bombers be ruined, killing its crew members, to prevent Russia’s “Doomsday Machine” from going off and sending the world into a nuclear winter. Kubrick felt that this
The Stanley Kubrick film, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, uses the rhetorical device of satire to raise the issue of the Soviet-American arms race throughout the film. A satire uses humor, irony, and sarcasm to “expose and discredit vice or folly” (Merriam-Webster, 2018). Mutually assured destruction was believed to be the end result of a nuclear war between the two world powers and Kubrick’s film pokes fun at this absurd conclusion. Edward Norton, disturbing monster, or someone we sympathise with. This is the scene that changes our very gripping opinions on Derek as a person. It changes the way we view him. He has realised his wrongs and is showing remorse. In this frame we see Derek covering his eye gripping swastika tattoo with his hand. His facial expressions filled with remorse as we see his lips over turned like a frown and his eyes squinting, which allows us to understand his disgust toward his decisions and hatred for his tattoo. Derek is left looking vulnerable. Through Edward 's performance we see him totally stripped down and as an audience we can see that so we connect with him, we can feel the wave of pain and emotion that he is going through. As an audience we see him evolving as a person he’s changing and this is a turning point for him. It was that moment when he really realised killing those people made no difference it achieved nothing, through Edward 's performance we can really see that. Derek has gone from being so proud of his tattoo in the first scene to being ashamed of it. We see him boasting about it in the beginning of the film showing it off like he was Hitler, to this frame here where he is ashamed to have that on his body now longing for purity and a new beginning. Through Kaye’s direction Edwards’s performance has connected with the audience on a personal level that is exactly what Tony wanted to achieve. A moving Performance by Edward is shown through his failure to tie a
Uh, depending on the breaks.” The president calls Turgidson out by saying that it is a mass murder he is planning not a war, (the systematic attitude against millions of deaths) this only emphasizes the disregard for human life. Dr. Strangelove is ghastly in the sense that it satirizes and pokes fun at the bomb scare so effectively, it makes the whole concept seem ridiculous. However, it is a very real threat and a possible reality. The use of black humor and comic relief add weight to the themes of the film because it provokes thought and a reaction from its audience.
