What Is Jane Eyre's Treatment Of Women

Readers learn early in the story that Jane Eyre does not fit contemporary society's idea of a proper woman.  As a child, Jane stands up to her aunt, Mrs. Reed, on more than one recorded occasion when Jane feels she has been treated unjustly (Brontë 28, 37).  At one point, Jane bluntly tells her aunt, "I declare, I do not love you: I dislike you the worst of anybody in the world except John Reed [Jane's cousin]" (37).  This was at best improper behavior for a child in Victorian society, and it was most definitely seen as improper by Mrs. Reed who grows to hate Jane, calling her "tiresome, ill-conditioned" and "scheming" (26).  But her aunt's reprimands and hatred do not deter Jane from speaking up in the face of injustice.

The role of a married woman and man is a prominent factor in chapters four and five. In chapter four, it is made known that Logan wants a hard working wife, forcing her to do chores and other housework as if he is treating her like a slave. Logan compares Janie to his first wife which I think it shows disrespect and one should never compare the wife of a past marriage to the person directly. Janie stands up for herself saying, “You ain’t done me no favor by marryin’ me. And if dat’s what you call yo’self doin’, Ah don’t thank yuh for it” (30).

Charlotte Bronte’s novel Jane Eyre embraces many feminist views in opposition to the Victorian feminine ideal. Charlotte Bronte herself was among the first feminist writers of her time, and wrote this book in order to send the message of feminism to a Victorian-Age Society in which women were looked upon as inferior and repressed by the society in which they lived. This novel embodies the ideology of equality between a man and woman in marriage, as well as in society at large. Jane Eyre was written in a time where the Bildungsroman was a common form of literature. The importance was that the mid-nineteenth century was, "the age in which women were, for the first time, ranked equally with men as writers within a major genre" (Sussman 1). In many of these novels, the themes were the same; the protagonist dealt with the same issues, "search for autonomy and selfhood in opposition to the social constraints placed upon the female, including the demand for marriage" (Sussman). Jane Eyre fits this mould perfectly. Throughout the novel, the reader follows Jane Eyre on a journey of development from adolescence to maturity to show that a desire for freedom and change motivates people to search for their own identity.

“When the going gets tough, the tough get going”. This is what the protagonist must do in Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. Jane is an orphaned child who grows up with a family that dislikes her. She attends school and does well enough to earn herself a job as a governess. Employed by Edward Rochester Jane falls in love with him, but must leave after their wedding gets canceled due to him already being married. While Jane is gone she receives a fortune from her long lost uncle Eyre, and Jane returns to marry Mr. Rochester after the untimely death of his insane wife. Her story raises the question ”Was Jane Eyre successfully able to rise above the circumstances of her day?” Before I answer that question we must look at the theme of the novel. Jane Eyre's theme is the place of women in Victorian society, with men having social and physical dominance. Women didn’t have much influence except through marriage. Making it extremely difficult for women to overcome situations involving abuse. It was also very difficult for women of the time to stand up for themselves, remain independent, and break down social barriers. Jane Eyre was able to overcome these four things, and therefore she was able to rise above the circumstances of her time period.

The first point to be discussed with feminism in this literature, Brontë portrays Jane Eyre to be a very subtle Feminist. Jane's approach to feminism is not rebellious or outlandish at all. She lets her character speak for itself, .due to her harsh living environments she had to take that approach considering in the nineteenth-century, the quality of life as a women was entirely based on how beautiful women were and who they were married to. Along with a wealthy economic status, Jane however, had none of these things going for her. For example she was an orphan in this particular family named the Reeds, they are a very wealthy family and took her into an extremely toxic household which was very different to her past living environments, were later on corrupted her in the future to believe that all women should not be treated equal to but less than when compared to men. From the disrespect she received from Mrs Reed, and the bullying from her son John she was always able to stand up for herself no matter how bad or unfairly she was being treated. There were many instances were Jane was being treated unjustly. Ms. Reed would allow her children and even the maid of the house be disrespectful to her. Everyday Jane was being being compared to things like “little toad” (bronte 41).
