In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee has created many characters who exhibit such courage, even in the face of adversity, and develops this into a major theme. Atticus Finch, Arthur Radley, and other members of the Finch household and Maycomb community, display amazing courage in the things they say, but more importantly in the way they act. These characters all contribute to the novel’s theme of showing courage through adversity.

“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand” (112). Courage is a potent theme in the book To Kill a MockingBird by Harper Lee. Although it may have different meanings to different people, in the book, Harper Lee has suggested that courage may not always involve violence of fear.

While the trial is going on, Scout and Jem befriend their mysterious neighbor whom they have never even seen. Through this friendship and the trial Scout and Jem are able to open their eyes to the injustices and prejudices of the people of Maycomb. Scout, Atticus, and Tom Robinson are all heroes in the small town of Maycomb.

Atticus, his children Jem and Scout, live in the small town Maycomb, Alabama during the Great Depression. With this location and time setting, Lee reveals the racial injustice of the south through the characters Tom Robinson, Bob Ewell, and Calpurnia.

He displays many acts of courage throughout the book, such as taking on the Tom Robinson case, never wavering in his beliefs despite the criticism he receives, and always trying his best to help everyone in anyway that he can.

Courage is usually shown as having great strength and bravado. However, there is another kind of courage, the quiet, humble type, in which an individual stands for his beliefs and principles. In To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is the ability and willingness to confront fear, pain, danger, uncertainty and intimidation, to stand for what is right. Many of the book’s characters depict this virtue, but none more than Atticus Finch does. He shows courage as a parent, lawyer and member of his community. Atticus believes that courage, like charity, starts at home.

These three characters show the most courage because even through hard times they keep their ground and do not show any source of anger or fear.
