What Is Stereotyping?

Everyday humans are affected by negative stereotyping. Stereotyping can have lasting effects on a person. Some people feel like the odd person walking down the street do to stereotyping. Some of the negative effects of stereotyping are inability to focus, performing poorly, and falling into harsh stereotyping.

Gen Z is later described as not similar to millennials but “‘more like their grandparents (or, in some cases great-grandparents)’, Mr.Howe said [who is a researcher and a social trends consultant]”(Williams). They grew up in the same kind of struggle, them with the Great Depression and Gen Z with the Great Recession.

Stereotyping and discrimination are very deeply ingrained in American culture. Even though there have been movements taken to combat stereotyping and discrimination such as the Civil Rights Movement, the Women’s Rights movement, and the Black Lives Matter Movement, it still exists. This raises the question of, how do we end it? While there is no definite answer there is a way to avoid stereotyping and discrimination. The three essayists Bharati Mukherjee, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Brent Staples and show that by learning about stereotyping, people can also learn how to change themselves to avoid discrimination based on stereotypes. Right outside a corner store, next to a stoplight, or at a park, there may be a homeless person asking for some sort of help; it can either be for a place to stay, money, or food. Many people are used to categorizing a group of people by a solo characteristic, known as a stereotype. Misconception, on the other hand, is a conclusion of someone or something that is wrong because it is based on faulty thinking or facts. Stereotypes and misconceptions appear to be similar, however, these two are not. A misconception is formed from having a stereotype. The United States has been known for its wide variety of diversity. As a result, people from opposite sides of the world have collided and merged their core characteristics. However, despite the enormous variety of cultures that inhabit in the United States, there still exists racism against other ethnicities. The actions that the government has taken in order to counteract this acts of discrimination are being reconstructed generation by generation. Nevertheless, accuracy cannot be precise when trying to classify a person in respect of his/her race. The practice of asking individuals to identify their ethnicity in official documents should be reassembled because this action of classification could fall to another form of stereotyping.

Stereotyping leads to prejudice. If I am walking in a park and I see a group of people walking towards me (lets say all are white males) and they are dressed up and look very nice. I do not panic, now another group is walking towards me and now this group is all men (African Americans) and they are dressed and conduct themselves just the same as the first group, but I panicked with this group. Why because I stereotyped the second group and if I was prejudice no matter how they dressed or acted I would be afraid of them because they are black. I judge them based on skin color and not on individuality.

As a society, a majority of people use stereotypes without consciously knowing it. It categorizes people and simplifies our understanding of different groups of society and our surroundings. In this aspect it can be beneficial because being able to identify someone based on gender, ethnicity, culture, etc. you can make assumptions of customary greetings or how to approach a particular situation or custom. Also, stereotypes may help oneself identify with an in-group. In comparison, problems may arise when stereotyping individuals and groups. In extreme cases stereotyping leads to prejudice and discrimination. If we can learn anything from our history, is that stereotyping that leads to prejudice and/or discrimination often have traumatic effects

Social media consistently blasts any claims or belief that Americans are living in a time-period beyond racism. There have been numerous situations involving shooting deaths or beatings, which have resulted in media attention, along with resolutions that many are unhappy about. This unhappiness regarding feelings of unjust decisions have led to protesting, rioting, and even more violence. The most recent and current event where this has played-out is the Ferguson incident and court rulings. It would seem that some sort of processing or growth might develop from these events, but it’s like a blink in time for society, and the media moves on to other stories; other ruin and injury. Stereotypes make us simplify our social world so it’s it becomes easier to recognize some situations. They make us understand basic groups of people to some extent of truth. “The most famous study of racial stereotyping was published by Katz and Braly in 1933, 100 university students were asked to indicate the traits most characteristic of ten different social groups. Students displayed a high level of agreement about the traits of certain racial and ethnic groups, such as Negroes (described as superstitious by 84% of the students, and as lazy by 75%), and Jews (described as shrewd by 79%).” All kinds of people of stereotypes about others.

I commend you for openly saying that you have such bias against that group of people. However, as a police officer, it is your responsibility to serve and protect the people. Meaning, you have to protect everyone regardless of their gender preference. You are on your way to acceptance because you have acknowledged the problem and you can do it. We have biases towards certain groups of people, race you name it. However, it takes a brave person to acknowledged

Stereotypes, or preconceived ideas about persons or groups, are a major problem throughout this country. I did not realize how much until I attended college at Minnesota State University at Mankato, where I was one of 5 students from the Southern United States. I was asked if people ever thought I wasn’t as smart because of my accent, if I had to walk to school, if we had outhouses, if we had electricity, and the list goes on. I had been in the military and traveled across the country and had never been asked questions like that before. It must have been because they had never really been exposed to someone from the South other than television or movies as I could come to no other conclusion. The problem is much worse for minorities because larger numbers of people have and act on these preconceived ideas without realizing that everyone is an individual regardless of the color of their skin or ethnicity.

I find myself being stereotyped. Is it because of how those around me choose to act? Is it because of my word choice at times? Or is it because I am black? Some may say stereotypes dont affect people but in reality they do.

It was just the average day in a small Syrian town just days after the Paris bombing. They were already on their way out when they were caught in heavy artillery where everything was destroyed. Their was a very thick smog like haze in the air. They ran around everyone was covered in blood and dust from the buildings. They were picked up and carried to a truck full of kids. Everyone on the back of the truck everyone was bleeding, crying, and most didn’t know what to think. Amar and Andy both woke up on a boat packed tight with lots of other refugees. They finally arrived to land and were put on a list for adoption. They soon got adopted and were flew to America.

Technology is not all to blame for the stereotypes about Generation Z. Despite the negative comments about Generation Z being lazy and unaware, they are not at all. In fact, because most of them are technologically inclined and virtually updated, they are not apathetic, they’re just being teenagers who were raised in a different environment. This is why there is such a thing as generations in this world. If there weren’t any changes in the world, we wouldn’t even be able to tell if a new generation has come. Every generation has its benefits for a better and more advanced living.

In any generation, from the Greatest Generation to Generation Alpha, you have your outdoorsy people, your video gamers, your pushovers, your leaders, your cooks and the people who can’t even make microwave popcorn. While certain things are supposed to affect a generation’s behavior, some will affect certain people and other’s won’t. Just like we all have a different code of DNA, different fingerprints or hairs on our heads, our personalities also differ. Maybe some people from Generation Z will fall apart without their devices, but others could care less about modern technology. One cannot address a generation and using the traits given to the age group, decide their capability in different scenarios. One thing that can be done, is understanding that everyone was made to have different skills for the exact purpose of being the yin to someone’s yang. To fill the empty spaces others cannot. Whether any group of people is thought of as deadbeats or not, humans were made to succeed. I choose to believe that we are all capable of surviving with a group of other people and Generation Z is included in that.
