Texting and Driving One thing that seems to be a growing problem in our society today is texting and driving. Many people claim that they do not get on their phones while driving, but statistics show that is false. Texting and driving is against the law. Studies show that text messaging makes a crash up to 23 times likely. This is especially common for teenagers. Texting and driving are causing death and crashes, getting pulled over and receiving a ticket, or even killing a pedestrian. It only takes 5 seconds to distract a person while driving. Making the mistake to text while you drive can sometimes lead to death or severe crashes. Statistics show that teens who text while driving spend approximately 10% of their driving time outside of their lane. This can cause another car to hit you or even make you overcorrect quickly. Cars are getting smarter and more useful. Millions of people are driving each day. Cops are more heavy than they have ever been before. Although, it is sometimes hard for a cop to detect if you are texting and driving. I think that this is the reason so many people think they can get away with texting and driving. In recent local accident, either drunk driving or texting and driving was involved. Texting while driving is 6x more likely to cause an accident than driving drunk. In New York, the number of tickets given out for texting while driving in the five boroughs shot up 50 percent last year. Even though New York is a bigger place than Gibson County, I think cops should hammer down on the law more here. However, in some states cops are not allowed to pull people over for this issue. The cost of a texting ticket is nearly $500 in Indiana. In Alaska, the fine is $10,000 plus prison! That is more than a speeding ticket at times. Texting and driving is a
