The success of any democracy relies on the participation of its American Citizens. The nation is bounded by the shared values of freedom, liberty, and equality. The United States has also welcomed many newcomers from all over the world. Even though they may be naturalized citizens, they are still an important part of the democracy. Being an American Citizen means that you will have a voice in how the nation is governed. Being a citizen also means that you have several rights and responsibilities that should always be respected. The most important of the rights given is, the right to vote and the freedom to pursue “life, liberty, and he pursuit of happiness.” It is a responsibility to respect and obey federal, state, and local laws. As well as pay income and other taxes honestly, and on time, to federal, state, and local authorities. Although there were several influential documents that contributed to the development of these rights in the U.S. Constitution, the most significant were the Magna Carta, The Petition of Right, and John Locke’s Second Treatise on Government.
