“Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH” is a story about a group of animals on a farm who do everything in their power to salvage their home. Mrs. Frisby is the head of the farm who everyone turns too because she is so kind and loving. Lately, it hasn’t been easy for Mrs., Frisby because she has been caring for her very sick son. In efforts to help him get better, she seeks out Mr., Agnes, a wise mouse, for some medicine that will work its magic on her son Timothy. Although things begin looking up for Timothy’s well being, summer was quickly approaching and Timothy was in charge of changing over their home for the summer time so they wouldn’t be plowed by the farmers. This storyline was all based around moving Mrs. Frisby home to safety in order to steer clear of plowing season. Throughout the story, we are able to witness Mrs. Frisby go to extreme lengths to save her home and keep her family happy. Although it is not an easy process, Mrs. Frisby never gave up. Her home was her safety net and the place where her family could all be together. Mrs. Frisby and her children were especially lucky to even have a house. Although it was a slightly damaged cinder block, the hollow kind with two ovals through it, but it was the place they called home and they would make it work no matter what the season (pg. 38). There was no way she was going to let it all be destroyed by the farmers. Instead of relocating, she travels all over to find a way to solve her problem, which, in the end, is accomplished. In comparison to the impact Mrs. Frisby’s home has on her life, the rats of NIMH don’t really have a set home. They are not dependent on one certain place, which is why they come up with a plan to re-locate when they find out the rosebush is going to be torn down. To them, home is wherever they can live independently or create a place for themselves. At this stage in their life, they are more focused on trying to be independent enough so they don’t have to depend on anyone for anything. They are highly trained to live and work in any condition.
