This storyline was all based around moving Mrs. Frisby home to safety in order to steer clear of plowing season. Throughout the story, we are able to witness Mrs. Frisby go to extreme lengths to save her home and keep her family happy. Although it is not an easy process, Mrs. Frisby never gave up. Her home was her safety net and the place where her family could all be together. Mrs. Frisby and her children were especially lucky to even have a house. Although it was a slightly damaged cinder block, the hollow kind with two ovals through it, but it was the place they called home and they would make it work no matter what the season (pg. 38). There was no way she was going to let it all be destroyed by the farmers. Instead of relocating, she travels all over to find a way to solve her problem, which, in the end, is accomplished. In comparison to the impact Mrs. Frisby’s home has on her life, the rats of NIMH don’t really have a set home. They are not dependent on one certain place, which is why they come up with a plan to re-locate when they find out the rosebush is going to be torn down. To them, home is wherever they can live independently or create a place for themselves. At this stage in their life, they are more focused on trying to be independent enough so they don’t have to depend on anyone for anything. They are highly trained to live and work in any condition. Unlike Mrs. Frisby, they are willing to
John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men follows the journey of two men, George Milton and Lennie Small, who struggle through the navigation of working on a ranch in California and fulfilling their dreams together during a time of financial depression. The novel begins with George and Lennie traveling through the California wilderness to get to a new ranch just south of Soledad where they are going to begin new work. They had to leave their previous jobs in a town called Weed because Lennie had caused trouble with a girl by holding on to her red dress because he wanted to feel it, and this incident spiraled into rape allegations against Lennie. As George and Lennie make their way to the new ranch, Lennie; who is a large, but simple minded man; found a dead mouse and wanted to keep it to pet because he likes soft things. George, who is more serious and protects Lennie, takes the mouse away from him because even though it’s dead, he should not be messing with it. Lennie often does not realize his strength because of his mental incapabilities and as a result, he causes a lot of trouble and harm. George finds taking care of Lennie to be taxing, but he knows that their friendship is an important bond that he does not want to be without. In order to comfort Lennie in the wilderness, George tells the story of their shared dream to own their own ranch where they can follow their own rules and live as they please. When they finally arrive at the ranch the next day, George and Lennie
Steinbeck presents Curley’s wife as a valueless object and a naive, venerable girl. Through the complexity of her personality, she unravels the story. Finally, her life has been cut short by the desire for human contact. Relating too much of the novel, “Of Mice and Men” is Robert Burns’ poem “To a Mouse” from which the title of the novel comes from, “with naught but grief and pain for promised
Although Jewett and Freeman both have poverty-stricken female protagonists, each women’s intentions are driven by different circumstances. Even though Sylvia’s house is described as “the best thrift of an old-fashioned farmstead, though on such a small scale that it seemed like a hermitage”, being poor is not what prompts Sylvia’s motives. She is driven by animal rights to seize the power to make her own decision to reveal the heron’s location. Whereas, the barn is much nicer than the house that Mother and the children currently live in. Mother interrogates father, stating, “you’re lodgin’ your dumb beasts better than you are your own flesh an’ blood. I want to know if you think it’s right” (C666). The sense of poverty within the decomposing house influences Mother to go against father and make the barn into their new updated living quarters. The circumstances that both protagonists were confronted with fueled their compassion to overcome the obstacles each were faced with.
The novel titled, Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, derives from the poem, To a Mouse, written by Robert Burns in the 18th century. Of Mice and Men echoes the famous lines, 'The best laid plans of mice and men often go astray, and leave us only grief and pain for promised joy!' The famous lines written by the Scottish poet is about a mouse who carefully constructs a winter nest in a field of wheat. Its dreams to be sheltered and comfortable through the winter is eventually destroyed by a ploughman, leaving the mouse nothing but 'grief and pain'.

The novel Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck is set in America in the 1930’s and it describes the lives of migrant farmers as they go from farm to farm looking for jobs. It also shows the loneliness of the characters and the hard work that they put in. The main characters of the book are Lennie, a man-child, and George, a small man but very powerful character that takes care of Lennie in their journey. Also when they get to the farm they meet the bosses wife who is very lonely and looks for company in the workers. Steinbeck uses characterization to bring his characters to life using various techniques.
Of Mice and Men describes the life of a man and his best friend who has the mentality of a child. Their friendship is very strong and this is surprising, “it jus’ seems kinda funny a cuckoo like him and a smart little guy like you travelin’ together”, and this is due to the other characters in the book being implied as very lonely.
One dark, misty night on Manor farm, the pigs were partying. They partied in the Jones house with Mr. Pilkington Napolean didn’t let any other animals into the house besides the pigs were so fat they couldn’t stand on two feet, they had to crawl. On the other hand the other animals were locked up in the barn and very mistreated; they were only fed leftover whiskey, milk, and apples.
Of Mice and Men, a fictional book, written by John Steinbeck, is about two migrant farm workers named George Milton and Lennie Small. George had a small built but he was quick to think, Lennie was big, but he didn’t know his capability or how strong he was. He was also mental in the head. George dreams of having a piece of land where he can start a farm on it, Lennie’s dream was to have an abundance of rabbit where he can tend. Lennie has an addiction where he has to touch something soft, like a puppy, a dress, and a mouse. This is problematic because he grabbed a girl’s dress and wouldn’t let go which lead them to being chased out of Weed Town. After they got chased out of Weed Town they fled to a ranch in Salinas Valley far away
As the ladies examine the house, while the men are other places, picking clothes and an apron up for Mrs. Wright, Mrs. Hale gains sympathy for her until finally she starts to take action. When they find the block of quilting that has stitching askew, she starts to fix it, perhaps to cover for Mrs. Wright?s distraught state of mind. While Mrs. Hale is finding sympathy for Mrs. Wright, Mrs. Peters offers a counterpoint that tries to justifies the men?s viewpoints and actions. Her comments to Mrs. Hale?s resentful musings on Mrs. Wright?s unhappy life and on the actions of men in regards to women in general all seem to be rote answers programmed into her by society and a desire not to cause any trouble. This all changes as soon as Mrs. Peters finds the bird.
"Of Mice and Men" is a book about two men and their struggle to achieve their dream of owning a small ranch through their companionship. The two men are completely different, one being a retarded fellow (Lennie), and the other, a typical ranch hand(George) who travels with him. On the path to achieving their dream, they run into obstacles, but stick together, stressing the importance of true friendship. Steinbeck wrote this book to tell us how important it is to have a friend to share your life with.
The protagonist, Mrs. Wright, is trying to keep from being accused of murder and this is why she hides the dead bird. The two women, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters, begin to warm up to what really has happened and throughout the story continue to grow more sympathetic towards Mrs. Wright. The suspense is built up very well trying to figure out whether or not she will get convicted. In the climax, the two women find Mrs. Wright's dead bird and realize what has happened. They are faced with the dilemma of whether or not to turn her in for what they now know she is guilty of. The reader does not find out what happens but is left to assume the best ending. Although the plot of this story is not very exciting, it does achieve its central purpose of showing the women leaving the men out in the cold and uniting together. Throughout the plot and structure they were some instances of irony that were used very well.
Although seemingly unimportant to the storyline, the presence of the foxes and horses play a major role in the story, as they symbolize the sides of the conflict between conformity and self image. The foxes represent conformity; they all live in the same routine, are controlled by others in their environment, and are both literally and metaphorically locked in a cage. The narrator’s environment is much like the foxes, controlling. Her parent’s subtle hints, whether it be her mother’s comments or her father’s tasks, are slowly but surely enclosing on her like a cage, and will soon trap her.
