From when she was born Emily’s father kept her from society and put a strong barrier over her life especially when it came to men. He kept her from interacting with others which then led to Emily becoming a social outcast. This is what leads to Emily being psychologically broken. Studies show that human isolation is not only “physically bad for us”(Bond), for “lonely people have higher blood pressure, are more vulnerable to infection, and are also more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease and dementia” (Bond), but it also takes a big tole on humans psychological state. The University of Illinois produced a study which showed how the brain is affected by isolation. Since animals and humans can have the same effects due to social reclusiveness, researchers at the university were able to use mice to prove how the an enzyme called, 5-alpha-reductase type 1, impairs the mice ability to restrict aggression and anxiety. They found that the lonely mice “ 5 alpha-reductase type 1, reduced nearly 50 percent”( University of Illinois) after being a lone for a long period of time. One example of when …show more content…
It takes place in a Mississippi town during the post civil war in the South. The setting plays a big role in the story, for it shows how ones gender and social class affects his or her treatment by society. At this point in time women were still seen as objects and expected to marry and depend on her husband for stability, the town harshly criticized Emily for being single as it says “when she got to be thirty and was still single, we were not pleased” ( Faulkner 2). Also the setting explains why different social classes are treated differently. After losing her father Emily’s financial state began to crumble. After seeing this the town began to isolate and criticize her. The time period helps readers understand the towns actions. For example after her fathers death the town keeps wondering who she will marry and only focus on the men in her life rather than her as a human. Thus showing how women in that time were not expected to make a living but rather stay at home and
A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner is a short story with third party narration, centered on the main character, Emily Grierson. "A Rose for Emily" is a fictional short story written by 1949 Nobel Prize winner William Faulkner. Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" is about an aristocratic woman who lived a very secretive and unusual life. Miss Emily had always been very sheltered by her father. He was the only man in her life and after his death, her behavior became even more unnatural. However her father's death cannot be seen as the only cause of Miss Emily's insanity. Miss Emily's behavior was also influenced by her own expectations of herself, the townspeople's lack of authority over her, and her neighbor's infatuation with her.
Culture is also important to the setting in the story being told. Miss Emily was a Grierson. The high and might Grierson’s as they were known in Jefferson. Faulkner talks about how “Miss Emily had gone to join the representatives of the august names where they lay in a cedar-bemused cemetery among the ranked and anonymous graves of the union and confederate soldiers who fell at the battle of Jefferson.” By describing this culture setting Faulkner is setting the tone for what kind of character Emily is, and what kind of family she had. The Grierson’s were a powerful family in Jefferson, royalty if you will, and Emily was the last of this great family.
William Faulkner paints a tragic tale about the inevitability of change and the futility of attempting to stop it in "A Rose for Emily". This story is about a lonely upper-class woman struggling with life and traditions in the Old South. Besides effective uses of literary techniques, such as symbolism and a first plural-person narrative style, Faulkner succeeds in creating a suspenseful and mysterious story by the use of foreshadowing, which gives a powerful description about death and the tragic struggle of the main character, Miss Emily. In general the use of foreshadowing often relates to events in a story, and few are attempted to describe character. Faulkner has effectively

William Faulkner wrote, "A Rose for Emily." In the gothic, short story he contrasted the lives of the people of a small Southern town during the late 1800's, and he compared their ability and inability to change with the time. The old or "Antebellum South" was represented by the characters Miss Emily, Colonel Sartoris, the Board of Aldermen, and the Negro servant. The new or "Modern South" was expressed through the words of the unnamed narrator, the new Board of Aldermen, Homer Barron, and the townspeople. In the shocking story, "A Rose for Emily," Faulkner used symbolism and a unique narrative perspective to describe Miss Emily's inner struggles to accept time and change
She is faced with the unknown because she has never been without her father in her life. Moreover, Stockholm syndrome is condition that can be associated with the fact her father kept her from men. It would not be that he loved her in that certain way as wanting to be in a relationship with her or vice versa, but as if he was trying to protect her from something. Stockholm syndrome is when a victim develops strong feelings for their captor. Her father would be her captor in this case. He kept her away from love, without a reason being, except for no one was good enough for her. “We remembered all the young men her father had driven away…”. (section II:paragraph 16). Emily had to deal with his way of life until there was no more of him. She was “ thirty and was still single” (section II:paragraph 13)which did not please the townspeople. “ After her father’s death she went out very little; after her sweetheart went away, people barely saw her at all.”(section II:paragraph 2). The townspeople said when they saw her again, “ her hair was cut short, making her look like a girl… resemblance to those angels in colored church windows.”(section III: paragraph I).This proves that after being “ locked away” for so long, she was able to be who she wanted to be. She found herself with more confidence with who she was becoming then from who she used to be. Her father was not there running
William Faulkner’s short story, A Rose for Emily, is a dark tale of a young girl damaged by her father that ended up leaving her with abandonment issues. Placed in the south in the 1930’s, the traditional old south was beginning to go under transition. It went from being traditionally based on agriculture and slavery to gradually moving into industrial and abolition. Most families went smoothly into the transition and others, like the Griersons, did not. Keeping with southern tradition, the Griersons thought of themselves as much higher class then the rest of their community. Emily’s father found no male suitable for his daughter and kept her single into her thirties. After her fathers death Miss Emily was swept off of

Although Miss Emily was already crazy, isolating herself was the true cause of her destruction and sick
The first part of the story talks about her father, which was the genesis of her oppressive life. He controlled her whole life. These made her completely dependant of him and since he did not allow her to date, she has no one else to depend on. Her father “had driven away” many “young men” who wanted to marry her. This decision made by the father end up in Emily not being married when thirty. When her father died Emily got “sick”. It took her 3 days to accept he was gone and after burying him, she was not seen for a while. She had other “kin in Alabama” but because of a fight her father had they did not speak ever which also let Emily alone for a long time. Things seemed that they were going to get better when a man came to town who Emily started “dating”. But this ends up not being the case.
A Rose for Emily is a very complex and intricate story. During the story there are many undertones such as symbolism of the old south to the new south. As this story plays out Faulkner has written in many ways for Emily to defy her father and the old south.
“A Rose for Emily” is a fictional short story written by William Faulkner, a Nobel Laurette of the American South. The story takes place in a fictional city of Jefferson, Mississippi. Faulkner portrays Emily, the main character in the short story “A Rose for Emily” as a strong, stubborn woman who spends most of her life indoors in her house built in the seventies and leaves the people of her town in assumptions. At first, people of the town are curious to know about her; as time passes by, they lose interest in her story. She denied paying her taxes; she overlooked every mail that was sent to her at the end of the year about the taxes. She repeatedly says, “I have no taxes in Jefferson.” She denies the changes in her life, which makes no sense because there is life after every storm and death is the master.
