I think first and foremost we must establish the timeline of renegotiations for the NFL CBA. In the light of the current NFL landscape I believe it is in the best interest of the NFL owner’s and the players to establish good faith in these negotiations, in order to do that I believe we should open negotiations at the end of the 2017 season. The reason the NBA and MLB were able to renew their respective CBA’s smoothly was because the relationships between the players and owners is strong and both understand that working together will help both parties. The NFL does not have that luxury right now and we at the NFL must work to improve those relationships to make the game better for the owners, players and fans. By opening negotiations now we …show more content…
The pie should be split more in favor of the players as there are only 32 owners but there are 1,696 players who are on active rosters each week. So the players split their portion of the revenues with more people and they need a large slice in order to give each and every player a taste of the billion-dollar business that the NFL is.
b. There needs to be a change in how disciple is handed down
i. One of the largest issues for the players is that Goodell has to much power. The players want their to be a more transparent process in how fines and suspensions are handed down ii. I believe the NFL should create a position (If they have not already) that is responsible for all fines and suspensions. This could be Goodell, but if the player appeals the suspension or fine then the NFL should create a three-person panel that will hear the appeal. The panel will consist of a member of the league, NFLPA, and an independent arbitrator. iii. This will create a more fair and honest process for both the players and owners in the long run
c. A review of the drug protocol
i. The NFL players have been outspoken about the use of medical marijuana and how the affects of this drug could help them recover better in the offseason. ii. I believe there has been enough medical evidence that this should be a topic discussed in the next CBA iii. Marijuana should be a legal drug during the offseason, but I think
Never the less, we need to look deeper into the negotiations to see what is really being argues and who is genuinely at fault. One of the bigger arguing points of the expiration and creation of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement was the expansion of the football season from 16 games to 18 games. While, at the surface this may seem as though it is simple “two games”, it would be a dramatic change to many season aspects. Firstly, this would reduce the number of pre-season games from four to two. This lessens the team’s “real life” preparation time. Which gives both players and coaches real scenarios to base decisions about who to play, what players to release from the team and generally how to plan for their seasons. Another great thing about preseason is it gives fans a chance to see their teams in a cheaper setting, as these games normally do not have full price tickets. Additionally, there was great concern from players about health reasoning, as a 16 game season is already cruel to a football player’s body. Many players are often on the sideline for at least a small portion of the season with some sort of injury. Adding two more games only increases the chances for injury, which is accelerated with the short preparation time in a shorter preseason. You may ask at this point, what the owner’s standpoint may be. Unfortunately, it is most simply as being stated to recuperate more income from potential income losses. Obviously, the owners only see money in the
The NFL players today are paid more money because of their experience, talents, and abilities to recreate the game. The actors who usually get compensated the most are the franchise players. The franchise players (best players on their team) are treated more valuable and the teams base their game strategies because of the talents of those players. While other musicians are part of a role in the game plan, the franchise players carry most the load to the game design. The NFL players today can easily be substituted by other upcoming college students. Unlike past generations, the rivalry is even more difficult to play against today because the players want to remain in the league or not be traded to other squads. The NFL remains to improve year after year because of the large competitors that join the league and the current players that do not want to be put back.
Since 1876 when the first rules of american football were written it became one of the most aggressive and violent sports ever.Recently has become a huge problem that has to be solved. Although the life of a NFL player during the season has changed since then, their life after playing has pretty much stayed the same.If you dont know im here to tell you that's a big problem. The statistics shows a massive problem with NFL players health during their playing days, their safety after their playing days, and is not fully understood or recognized.
that changing the bylaws of the NFL would be beneficial to the league. One thing that I do agree with is that I think all teams, private or public, should be forced to reveal their books yearly. It certainly would promote more ethical business practices. That being said, I think the Packers represent a very unique model. First and foremost, their ability to maintain their publicly based ownership was grandfathered by the NFL. The Packers are the most historic franchise in the NFL and they have deep ties to the their community. Green Bay is also the smallest market in the NFL, so as you stated, their community-based ownership
In court Tom Brady’s deflate scandal was about following laws not weather he actually was a part of the scandal. Judge Berman isn’t focusing his ruling on the deflated footballs themselves as much as the arbitrator complying with the statues. As stated in the court ruling “Under the Federal Arbitration Act ("FAA''), "the validity of an award is subject to attack only on those grounds listed”. However in this scandal the NFL never had a rule against footballs being under inflated. Mr. Goodell is not free to dispense his own justice he must comply with the collective-bargaining agreement in which this case he didn’t. “The law of the shop” provides professional football players an advanced conduct of potential discipline. Judge Berman looked
This option would have more of a positive impact on each decision criteria. Choosing this solution would bring forth many advantages. For example, many fans’ would commend the punishment because the NFL would be taking a strong stand against domestic violence by eliminating a star player for a season. Therefore, it would have a more positive effect on Richardson’s and the NFL’s reputation. It is also likely that it would not have a negative impact on the team’s income. Another benefit of suspending Hardy for an entire season would be that it would give Hardy enough time to analyze his actions. Also, by the time the suspension is over, Hardy will be put on trial and receive additional punishments by the court. Although, suspending Hardy for an entire season may lead to unpredictable outcomes for the team’s success. It is unlikely that the team would advance to the playoffs, being short of an all-star
Business matters will never be an easy process to keep things functioning in a positive direction. Whether risk taking approaches spark trickle down effects or upward gains, he who steers the wheel should always know that nobody is bigger than the organization itself. Of course, pinching pennies will always save you a buck or two, but when it comes down to paying top employees, the “Benjamin Franklin’s” will always be up the ladder. In the NFL, one of the key aspects for an organization is to shape up their salary cap for the betterment of sharing the wealth through their roster and to ease things up to make long term investments on franchise talents.
The NFL, the National Football League, where stars can shine doing what they love for millions of fans, and where the NFL can create rules and policies every year to try and limit the freedom and take control of “it’s” players. It creates rules about what the players can and cannot wear, what they can do on and off the field, and even when and where they have to speak. The more constraints the NFL puts on the players, the more likely they will be to break them. In the past few years there have been more movements against the NFL to try and earn some of the players’ rights back. Just as Thoreau presents his and Emerson’s ideas in Civil Disobedience, the players in the NFL still emulate their ideas by being the “majority of one”(Thoreau).
To prevent further disruptions of league and staff operations, the recommendation for bi-annual meetings between the NFL and the player’s union should be considered. This would provide both sides a reasonable outlook period in which to improve the conditions of business. This time could be used by the parties to undergo voluntary mediation for the union’s members to come to a mutual agreement into what the players want and feel they need. The main purpose of this suggestion would be to alleviate the threat of strikes and lockouts due to expired CBA contracts.
The NFL’s process for modifying or adopting rules and regulations is systematic and consensus-oriented (National Football League). A Competition Committee was created in 1968 to review all of the procedure in the game including rule changes, roster regulations, technology game-day operations and player safety. The NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, appoints the members of committee which consists of “two owners (John Mara – owner, New York Giants and Stephen Jones – owner, Dallas Cowboys), two club presidents (Rich McKay (chairman) – president, Atlanta Falcons and Mark Murphy – president, Green Bay Packers), two general managers (Rick Smith – general manager, Houston Texans and Ozzie Newsome – general manager, Baltimore Ravens) and three head
Even though DeflateGate was still a key issue in the league, Brady was still out for the first four games of the year, forcing the Patriots to use rookie quarterbacks (Bedard 66). Jimmy Garoppolo, a second round pick in the 2014 draft, was expected to start the first four games, putting massive pressure on him and the Patriots’ defensive line to increase their performances (Bedard 66). Bedard writes that under Brady, the Patriots defense and offence both finished in the top ten among all NFL teams in 2015, setting the bar very high for their backup quarterbacks. All these disadvantages given to the Patriots brought Goodell’s reputation into question, and even though Goodell got to punish Brady, he may have caused his image harm by continuing to fight for his punishment to be accepted. A federal judge, when Brady presented his formal legal appeal, concluded that Goodell’s punishment was outside his power, seeing as “The NFL had a punishment for tampering with game equipment, and it wasn't a particularly large one: a fine of $25,000. Instead, Goodell ended up fining the Patriots $1 million, taking two draft picks. And then on top of that, he suspended Brady, even though the NFL's manual prescribes a team punishment rather than a player punishment” (Sherman). The judge decides, “It is clear that the arbitrator ‘must
The 2011 National Football League Collective Bargaining Agreement is the seventh agreement since the establishment of the first CBA in 1968. It is important to understand the terms of the CBA and the intent in which it was established. Collective bargaining agreements, in the context of professional sports, are the agreements reached between a particular league’s players and the league owners. A league’s collective bargaining agreement establishes specific elements of how the league will operate, such as: division of league revenues, team salary caps, free agency requirements, restrictions on player mobility, provisions regarding the drafting of players, disciplinary rules, and other general regulations of the league (Cit 3).
Having an altering to enforce stricter policies would eradicate or make players think twice before they break any regulations. When Roger Goodell took over for Paul Tagliabue as NFL Commissioner he acknowledges that the NFL will not allow its employees to break the rules and not suffer consequences. He created policies that would suspend player’s foe an extended period of times without pay. Now a lot of players and coaches think before they get involved in things that would bring a lot of attention to them or their organization. Most importantly, NFL employees understand that the current Commissioner will not tolerate bas press for the National Football League.
Leagues would promote revenue amongst their teams for competitive balanced. The revenue would be shared equally between the teams. Reasoning for an Owner wanting to share their revenue is because of profit for starters. That will increase the teams franchise by open more opportunities just by making that investment. At the end there is eventually more money coming in just by sharing your own revenue with other businesses. That’s how other leagues get partnerships and big deals with other
The NFL organization needs to take charge in what happens on the fields. “The history of protest in sports, much like that across society, holds many lessons for us that we can apply to the rancor that currently engulfs the nation.”, this shows that we are all unsure about what may happen in the future if we don’t take
