The medical field is full of many different career paths. Some choose pediatrics, some choose geriatrics, some choose oncology, and some choose psychology. However, only a few choose radiology as a career choice. Radiologists are medical specialists who use radioactive instruments and x-rays to diagnose and make treatment decisions regarding health problems. They examine various types of images including x-rays, computer tomography (CT scans), mammograms ultrasounds, and magnetic resonance imaging scans (MRI). Radiologists are skilled in operating machinery, monitoring imaging sessions, recommending courses of treatment, administering nuclear medications, examining patients, recording medical treatments, and

This can vary based on experience, education, and work setting. Clinics and hospitals may have to work weekends and evenings. (InnerBody) Often radiologists are on call even when physically not at work. It is a struggle of balancing a career in this field with a family life. Dr. Michael Daniel, a radiologist at BSA, answered questions pertaining to his job. When asked how his job affects his life outside of work he answered, “It is more emotional than physical. Finding a brain tumor in a child can have an emotion pull on some of us. Having to break bad news to families is the most difficult part of the job. Other than that we are constantly at risk for cancer.”
Radiologists prove the saying; hard work pays off, “as a pre-med student at WT… you had to meet the prerequisites in math, biology, chemistry and physics. Then I moved to med school, got good grades there and then had to complete a four year radiology residency.”(Daniel) Colleges that offer a radiology program include but, not limited to: Stanford Brown, Argosy University, Kaplan University, Keiser University and Walden University. Radiologist endure training of a four year residency, which include working, on average, sixty hours per week and spending some nights on call. Radiologist need to acquire
I am pursuing a career as a radiologist technician due to a number of reasons. It first started with my fascination of the complexity of the human body. In high school I had no idea I wanted to go into the medical field until I took an anatomy and physiology class, and this subject fascinated me. Solving problems and seeing results is something I want out of a career. I am looking forward to the life-long learning that is involved with a job in the healthcare field. As such, I am interested in a specialization in radiology so I can continue my education and provide a higher level of care to ill patients. Caring for the well being of others has always been one of my priorities and working in radiography would create opportunities for me to provide
Radiology Technicians are like heroes. Without x-rays they do many people’s sicknesses would go un-treated , as well as undetected. The job of a radiology tech is sometimes very stressful, but even though that it is stressful they know it’s worth the stress because they are saving other people’s lives. When being a radiology technician it can be very dangerous because of the administering radiation, but the benefits of being able to know that you helped a person out ways all the negative factors of this career.
According to the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, "Radiologic technologist are the medical personnel who perform diagnostic imaging examinations and administer radiation therapy treatments" ("Who"). They are also known as "RTs". They play a big part in patient care today in many ways. It has been stated that, "Radiologic imaging plays a major role in patient care by providing early and accurate diagnosis of disease, improved treatment planning, and image-guided therapies that help save lives every day" ("Radiation"). They are very important in today's society. This specific career requires a vast amount of educational background. These include: anatomy, patient positioning, examination techniques, equipment protocols, radiation safety, radiation protection and basic patient care ("Who"). There are also other specific requirements to become a registered radiologic technologist. One must complete two years of formal education in an accredited hospital-based program or a two- or four-year educational program and pass a national certification examination" ("Who). A benefit of being a radiologic technologist is the many specialty programs associated with the job. According to the article, "Who Are Radiologic Technologist?", some of the specialty programs include: bone densitometry,cardiovascular-interventional radiography, computed tomography, mammography, magnetic resonance imaging,
I currently attend Baton Rouge General School of Radiologic Technology to pursue an Associates degree through Northwestern State University. I chose this profession because I always want to help others. I want to play a part in the healing process of patients. Being able to help people determine things going on inside their body interest me and that is why I chose Radiology. The true definition of a Radiologic Technologist is the “medical personnel who perform diagnostic imaging examinations and administer radiation therapy treatments. They are educated in anatomy, patient positioning, examination techniques, equipment protocols, radiation safety, radiation protection and basic patient care”. This definition makes this job seem easy but it is not an easy job at all. We do so much pushing, pulling, and lifting of patients it is physically exhausting. When I first chose this profession I did not think there would be this much to taking images of someone. It is more than just placing a patient somewhere and
I hope to continue my education by attending West Virginia University. At WVU, I plan to study to become a radiology technician. I have always dreamed of working in the medical field. Radiology technicians are people who take x-rays, MRIs, mammograms, and images like that. The technician is also in charge of making sure the patient is safe in the process of imaging being taken. After completing my studies at WVU, I wish to find an available job in the state of West Virginia or a surrounding state. I have always dreamed of working the medical field, and being a radiology technician seems to be the career for
In their desired universities, they must take classes such as physiology, which is the study of the way living things function. Pharmacology, the study of uses and effects of drugs. Pathophysiology, the study of abnormal diseases in organisms. Pathology, the study of diseases. Biology, the study of the evolution of living things. Chemistry, the study of organic compounds. Physics, the study of matter and its motion. These are all courses that eager radiologist would have to take in order to become specialist in their desired
What has always been your dream career growing up? My dream career has been to be a radiologist, but not just any kind of radiologist an X-Ray technician. The outline of a radiologist is very interesting. The statistics stated in my essay will provide more information on X-Ray techs and radiologist in general.
I have always desired a career that would allow me to improve the lives of those around me while caring for a family of my own. I desire to feel successful through continual learning and challenge. Radiologic Technology will provide me this with ever changing tasks with different circumstances and challenges that require problem solving, critical thinking, and determination. Radiologic Technology will allow me to have interaction on a personal level with patients and their families and provide the opportunity to improve their lives by searching for the things that don’t appear on the
Radiologists have to go through undergraduate school, medical school, residency, and fellowship (American School of Radiology). Undergraduate school consists of four years studying for any degree although science degrees are recommended. In the fourth year of undergraduate studies, prospective medical school students should take the MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test). Then the student should complete medical school and in the fourth year, apply for residencies. Residency is completed in a hospital setting and takes about 4 or more years. After residency, radiologists usually go on to a fellowship that can take up to two years. During fellowship is when radiologists usually specialize (American College of Radiology). During their education, radiologists also learn radiotion protection, safety, and effects (Sapko). The programs are offered all over the
Radiologic technologists, often referred to as radiographers, are given the duty of preparing and completing x-rays of patients, as well as the maintenance and upkeep of the imaging equipment involved in this process. MRI technologists serve a similar purpose, although instead of operating and maintaining the equipment required to take x-rays, they have magnetic resonance imaging scanners, more commonly referred to as MRI scanners. Along with the maintenance of the imaging equipment, both radiologic and MRI technologists specialize in the preparation of certain dyes or drinks that make the imaging process easier and more effective.
A radiologist is awesome because they help someone, most of the time, more than one person a day! A radiologist is a cool job because it is health related.
