Journey to Medical Assisting When I was in high school, my great-grandmother became ill and came to live with us. Before school, after school, and during the weekend, I helped take care of her. This gave me a sense of pride and during that time, I realized how fulfilling it is to help people. I did not start out on the path to be a part of the medical profession, but I always had the desire! I have often given of my time volunteering at the Agape Senior Care facility. Now I am well on my way to becoming a medical assistant (MA)! What is a medical assistant? According to the American Association of Medical Assistants (2016), “Medical assistants are multi-skilled members of the health care team who perform administrative and clinical procedures under the supervision of licensed health care providers.” Medical assisting which is different from nursing has transformed over the years. In 1955 a medical assistant group from Kansas conducted a meeting to consider forming an organization that would be nationally organized. Seventy-eight representatives attended the meeting. They were from 15 states including, Arkansas, California, Tennessee, and Virginia. The representatives voted for the organization and named it, American Association of Medical Assistants. In 2016, the association is 60 years old! There has been many accomplishments over the years. In 1956, Maxine Williams, a cofounder of the organization became the first president. In 1961 the certifying board was formed. In 1963
Growing up in an underserved community made me realize the blessing of a quality education and good physicians. Having faced an arduous medical diagnosis has given me the ability to look at things from a special perspective. Rocky beginnings in community college accompanied by time off from school allowed me to work fulltime
The experience taught me to work hard to achieve my goal of becoming a doctor and helping as many people as I can. It taught me not to waste my time. All of my dedication has pushed me to be the best person I can be so in the future I can feel confident about all of my choices. Volunteering at Children’s Hospital offered me an experience that pushed me to strive for no less than excellence. By volunteering, I watched my dreams and ambitions get closer, and although the process is a slow and difficult one, every second of it was worth it because I was able to watch everything I value become
The mission of the American Association of Medical Assistants is to enable medical assisting professionals to enhance and demonstrate the knowledge, skills and professionalism required by employers and patients; protect medical assistants’ right to practice; and promote effective, efficient health care delivery through optimal use of the multiskilled CMA (AAMA). AAMA was incorporated in the State of Illinois as a not-for-profit professional organization. The national headquarters was opened in Chicago, Ill. The Scholarship Fund was started with a $200 contribution from Maxine Williams. It was later named the Maxine Williams Scholarship Fund. A Certification Committee was
"BOOM!" "BANG!", went my mom of her feet onto the floor! I ran over to help pick her up off the floor. I got her into the bed and checked for any scrapes or bruises. After I got her all patched up and comfortable I came to realize that the last time this happened she hadn't had her medicine in days. So I proceeded to give her the correct medication and stayed over the next few days to nurse her back to health. Over those few days even at a young age, I realized that the medical field was just for me. I enjoyed doing what I did to help my mom and wanted to continue to help others the same way I helped her.
To begin, medical assistants can be overlooked in a medical office because some health care professionals may not understand what a medical assistant can do. According to Taché and Chapman (2005), “Many physicians are unsure of what tasks are appropriate to assign to an MA and do not help MAs work to their full abilities and potential” (p. 51). Medical Assistant are a great asset to a medical office because the medical assistant can perform administrative, clinical, and laboratory tasks.
I am encouraged by the growth of physician assistants in primary care and strive to one day be a primary care provider myself. With changes in health care, it is becoming increasingly important for patients to have a primary care provider that they trust and rely on, and a physician assistant is a viable option for many families. One of the main focuses of the University
The enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2010 brought many changes to the United States health care system. Many Americans that did not have health coverage were finally able to acquire a health plan. Unfortunately, the increased influx of patients with new health coverage affected the clinician-to-population ratio. In addition, aging Baby Boomers have worsened the problem of an overflowing patient population. Currently, the United States faces a shortage of clinicians. Physician assistants (PAs), are licensed health professionals trained under a medical education model that can effectively fill the shortage of clinicians in the nation by providing health services and accommodating the imminent influx of patients.
Medical assistants are permitted to obtain vital signs, subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, removing sutures, change dressings, and administer nebulizing treatments when delegated to do so by a physician. Due to protocol an advanced practice nurse, a physician or physician assistant must be on-site in order for a medical assistant to administer nebulizing treatments, intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, removing of sutures as well as changing of dressings. Medical assistants can obtain vital signs without an on-site physician being present.
Medical assistants work closely alongside physicians, routinely within outpatient and ambulatory care facilities such as medical offices or clinics in

Serving as volunteer at Baptist Medical Center East played a large part in my decision to become a physician. I spent 17 months volunteering with the surgery department. In that time, I saw many patients and was able to observe the interaction of nurses, techs, physicians, and patients. As a volunteer I did a lot of cleaning and organizing, however I had the opportunity to meet with patients and show them to their holding room. I saw many patients come and go, from emergency surgeries to common everyday procedures. All of these had the same things in common, family members who are worried about their loved ones. As a volunteer, I was able to witness the worry and hesitation as families walked back to the waiting room. I was also able to witness

Coming from a medical family it was written onto me at an early age that health care and making people feel better is heartwarming and inspiring. One of the most influential people in my life is my mother, who is a nurse herself. Having watched my mother helped so many people, I grew into knowing that there is no greater reward in life. My mother's joy inspired me to become a nurse.
After a careful reading, Health Status Outcome (HSO) studies are focused on the ending result or outcome of medical care given, taking into account the health care process, and well being of patients and the population. Ultimately, these studies are looking at the health status of the patient and are related to diagnosis. For example, lab test results, complication rates, morbidity rates, functional status, well being, and satisfaction with care given are health status outcomes. Patient Reported Outcomes (PRO) are subjective reports generated from the patient either through diaries, self-completed questionnaires, or interviews regarding their treatment. PRO helps with research to evaluate patient’s perception, symptoms, satisfaction
