Beowulf was one of the most heroic heroes ever. He was brave, strong, and a smart leader. To begin with my essay I’m going to talk about Beowulf’s many characteristics. He has more than I wrote but I have a few good ones. These ones were special to me because I feel like these are his strongest qualities.
Beowulf is one of the bravest warriors ever. He was so brave that he wanted to fight Grendel because he knows that he’s the best. In his far-off home Beowulf, Higlar’s follower and the strongest of the Geats-greater and stronger than anyone everywhere in this world-heard how Grendel filled nights with horror and quickly commanded a boat fitted out. He didn’t care what it took he just wanted to stop Grendel. He didn’t want to go back on his word. Beowulf braveness leads him to chase after Grendel’s mother without thinking. He leaped into the lake, would not wait for anyone’s answer the hung water covered him over. He wanted to kill Grendel’s mother. Since Grendel’s mother found out that her son had been killed she wanted to get revenge on the Geats men. We are Geats, men who follow higlac. My father was a famous soldier; know far and wide as a leader of men. His was also

In fact that to prove how strong he was, he took on the monster Grendel. Instantly seized himself claws beat back as Beowulf learned up on one arm. While he was fighting the monster he grabbed his arm. In addition to grabbing Grendel’s arm he tore it off. Defeat the tears torn out of Grendel’s taut throat, hell’s captive caught in the arms of him who of all the men on each was the strongest. Grendel killed every man that he wanted to kill but not the great Beowulf; he couldn’t get the job done. He’s so strong that he did what no man on earth could do. So massive that no ordinary man could lift it up. He picked it up from somewhere. His strength was raging so much that he lifts the sword up. Likewise being brave and strong Beowulf also was a smart
One example of Beowulf’s strengths was no other man could do the same tasks, and fight the battles he fought. Beowulf goes into many battles throughout his lifetime. Also, the quote in line 505-506 “If weapons were useless he’d use his hands, the strength in his fingers”. Beowulf also lifts the giant forged sword from the wall and swings it hard enough to cut of Grendel’s mothers head. A sword that is described as “so massive that no ordinary man could lift its carved and decorated lengths.
Throughout all the battles he is fighting, and the outcomes of them. Beowulf shows he is courageous, has strength, and is honorable. Beowulf demonstrates these characteristics of an archetypal epic hero, In the epic poem “Beowulf”.
Beowulf’s strength is exemplified many times in the story. Beowulf was said to have “the strength of thirty men in his mighty handgrip.” He fought in numerous battles and returned victorious from all but his last. In his argument with Unferth, Beowulf explains the reason he lost a swimming match with his opponent Brecca. Not only had Beowulf been swimming for seven nights, he had also stopped to kill nine sea creatures in the depths of the ocean. Beowulf is also strong enough to kill the monster Grendel with his bare hands by ripping off his arm. When Beowulf is fighting Grendel’s mother, he is able to slay her by slashing the monster’s neck with a giant sword that can only be lifted by a person as strong as Beowulf. When he chops off her head, he carries it from the ocean with no difficulty, but it takes four men to lift and carry it back to Heorot. This strength is a key trait of Beowulf’s heroism.
Beowulf is a hero in the eyes of his fellow men through his amazing physical strength. He fought in numerous battles and returned victorious
Not only had Beowulf been swimming for seven nights, he had also stopped to kill nine sea creatures in the depths of the ocean. Beowulf is also strong enough to kill the monster Grendel with his bare hands by ripping off his arm. When Beowulf is fighting Grendel's mother, he is able to slay her by slashing the monster's neck with a giant sword that can only be lifted by a person as strong as Beowulf. When he chops off her head, he carries it from the ocean with no difficulty, but it takes four men to lift and carry it back to Heorot. This strength is a key trait of Beowulf's heroism.
Beowulf displays his unconquerable strength when he defeats a monster that no one else can defeat. He proves his mighty strength by defeating the monster, Grendel; “Beowulf was granted / the glory of winning; Grendel was driven / under the fen-banks, fatally hurt, to his desolate lair” (Heaney 817-820). Although Beowulf does not actually kill Grendel directly, he does give Grendel a wound that would eventually lead to his death. During the battle, Beowulf rips Grendel’s arm off with his bare hands, as shown in the following: “Clear proof of this / could be seen in the hand the hero displayed / high up near the roof: the whole of Grendel’s / shoulder and arm, his awesome grasp” (832-835). Beowulf has the strength of 30 men in his each of his arms, which he uses to tear Grendel’s arm off and decides to give to the king as a trophy of his win. In the end Grendel decides to go somewhere else to perish and reflect, “The ignominious marks of his flight / where he’d skulked away, exhausted in spirit / haling his doom to the demons’ mere” (842-845). Grendel, who was just utterly defeated faces death. In conclusion, Beowulf’s strength leads him to his victory and fame.
Part of the reason Beowulf is very well-known is that he has larger-than-life strength, more than that of any man. When he talks to King Hrothgar, he boasts: “They have seen my strength for themselves, have watched me rise from the darkness of war, dripping with my enemies’ blood. I drove five great giants into chains, chased all of that race from the earth. I swam in the blackness of night, hunting monsters out of the ocean, and killing them one by one; death was my errand and the fate they had earned.” (Unknown, 246-254) This shows that Beowulf has overcome many trials with his strength, and that unlike any other man, he has proven to be able to overcome the impossible. While Beowulf is fighting with Grendel the story says that Grendel “Twisted in
Beowulf took it upon himself and accepted the task of killing Grendel “Heard how Grendel filled nights with horror/And quickly commanded a boat fitted out” (line 111-112). Beowulf heard how Grendel was killing kings Hrothgar men and knew no one could stop him but him and if he did he would be remember forever by them. Beowulf leaves his home to help people he does not even no “The young warrior Beowulf, a nobleman from the land of the Geats, travels to the kingdom of the Danes, where he saves the people of King Hrothgar by slaying the monster Grendel and his mother”. He comes to a land of sacred people and kills not just one beats but two he will forever be remember by them. Even after years Beowulf will still put his life on the line for the fame “In endless battles. I am old, now,/But I will Fight again, seek fame still/If the dragon hiding in his tower dares/to face me” (line 625-628).
Beowulf exhibits many obvious heroic qualities, such as his strength and confidence in battle. These along with more subtle diplomatic actions serve to define him as both a great warrior and leader.
This is an action that none of the Danes have seen before, and an action that is extremely dangerous, a life or death situation. Beowulf shows his confidence in himself, sticks through his promise and kills Grendel in a fair fight with only his strength and strategy to help him. As a result Beowulf shows his great promise that seemed impossible for any human being to accomplish and how he falls through with
In Beowulf’s first of the three battles, Beowulf is certain he is stronger than his terrible adversary, Grendel, without weapons and armor. “Of force in fight no feebler I count me, in grim war-deeds, than Grendel deems him. Not with the sword, then, to sleep of death his
Strength is without a doubt one of the most important traits which a hero should possess and the Anglo-Saxon’s felt the same way. Beowulf’s strength can be compared to that of the American comic book heroes, Superman and Batman, for he is deemed the “strongest and greatest of the Geats”. The first time that his strength is witnessed, not just spoken of, is when he kills Grendel by ripping the monstrous villain’s arm off. But his most notable display of strength occurs when he enters into combat with Grendel’s mother. When everything seems to be going all wrong for Beowulf, he spies a “heavy” sword hanging on the wall of her lair. With all his power and might, Beowulf drew the sword, “hammered by giants...and….so massive that no ordinary man could life it”, from its scabbard. He “lifts it high over his head”, the sword clasped
Beowulf, himself, was known as a brilliant, strong, honorable, and brave man. From his youth, leading up to his reign as king, he held the characteristics of a hero. He also held a great deal of responsibility. Beowulf risked his life multiple times to aid and protect others. When Beowulf was asked to do something, he did, and completed the duty with confidence and honor.
Beowulf and Grendel both have monstrous strength. The difference between the two is how they use it. Grendel chooses evil over good, and eats those who try to protect Herot. He meets his match unexpectedly in the heroine of our story while greedily yanking soldiers out of their beds.. Beowulf is so confident in his physical abilities that he grabs hold of Grendel with his bare hands. This epic explains the situation by telling us “Nothing could take his talons and himself (Grendel) from that tight hard grip”(32). Beowulf makes short work of Grendel and makes him bleed to death whilst running away. Grendel reaches the lair where his mother resides. After his death, his mother seeks revenge. She rushes to Herot and grabs up men. Beowulf seeks and finds her lair without much opposition and grabs a mighty sword. He grabs the giant forged weapon that the epic describes as “so massive that no ordinary man could lift”(37), and kills Grendel’s mother, showcasing why he is remembered among the legends to this day.
Fortunately Beowulf was ready and willing to sacrifice himself to repay the debt of Ecgtheow, Beowulf’s father, to Hrothgar. This Geat warrior possesses almost miraculous qualities: “He was the strongest of men alive in that day, mighty and noble.” Upon spotting Beowulf approaching, the sea-guard of the Danes says, “Never have I seen a greater man on earth…” King Hrothgar of the Danes says of Beowulf, “Seafarers who took gifts to the Geats say that he has the strength of 30 men in his hand grip.” Beowulf chooses to fight Grendel by himself and without shield or weapons; previously the hero slew nine sea monsters with his sword. And he is fully willing to sacrifice his very life for this: “… I alone will fulfill the wish of your people … or die in the foe’s grasp.” Beowulf consciously chooses to act in a superhuman manner: “I shall perform the deeds of a hero or I have passed my last day
