People may seem nice on the surface, but hide agenda in their heart
Depending on any activity, competition or simply playing games for fun, people may act differently whether it is it peaceful or violent. When it comes to these situations, people will have to make choices to conclude a problem but we may never know what the other player can turn out to be. In the Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, General Zaroff seemed as a caring man who loves playing “games” with his visitors. However as the story progresses, he is truly a manipulative, tortures and a self centered man.
Firstly we see General Zaroff as a cruel man by manipulating his guests. “Come he said, we shouldn’t be chatting here. We can talk later. Now you want clothes, food, rest. You shall have

He makes his guest play his game or else there will be some serious consequences. “Tonight, we will hunt you and I” (pg9). When General Zaroff said this, he is forcing Mr. Rainsford to play his game, no matter what. Mr. Rainsford try to back out but General Zaroff would not allow it to happen; he does not want anyone to walk out without playing his game. Another example why he is a tortures man is because he does not want to win to fast. “The General was playing with him; the general was saving him for another day’s sport”. With that saying, the General saw where Rainsford hid, but he didn’t want to kill him yet because it would have been too easy. It seemed like General Zaroff wanted to suffer Rainsford until the last day of the games. And finally he is a tortures man because he treats humans like nothing; he does not care about them. “It’s a game you see, I suggest to one of them that we go hunting…I am to follow, armed only with a pistol…if I didn’t him, he loses”(pg4) This saying, it seems that General Zaroff treated them as his own entertainment. When he played the games, it seemed like he is treating them as
Rainsford's experience and intellect helps to give him a slight advantage against General Zaroff. In the short story the “Most Dangerous Game” by Connell. Unlike Rainsford, a
This quote likewise uncovers that "chasing" and slaughtering people is a diversion for General Zaroff and is messed with extremely by him. Additionally, amid their discussion General Zaroff expressed, "This is the reason I utilize them. It gives me joy. They can reason, after a design." (pg.26) When perusing this quote it ought to convey chills to you in light of the way broad Zaroff discusses different people. He alludes to them along the lines of creatures that he is chasing, in this way ending the lives of people doesn't trouble him at all. He likewise says toward the end of the quote that murdering people conveys joy to him, which breaks practically every moral code of
Even through Zaroff hunted, him later, Zaroff also treated Rainsford as if he was an equal because Rainsford was on his “level”. This made Zaroff more like a gentleman. Another reason why Zaroff is a gentleman is that he gave Rainsford a heads up that he uses hounds for the hunt, and he gave Rainsford a hunting knife, moccasins and a supply of food. He also inform Rainsford that he will bring him back to the mainland if he lasted into the third night. Another reason why Zaroff is a gentleman is he gave Rainsford an option if he wanted to participate in the game, what I mean by this is that Zaroff inform Rainsford if he does not wish to hunt, he could play Ivan’s ideas of sport (which is probably the worst) I knew Zaroff gave Rainsford a choice because in the text Zaroff said “the choice rests entirely with you” (he was referring to Rainsford). These are my reasons on why Zaroff is a
General Zaroff from “The Most Dangerous Game” and Montresor from “The Cask of Amontillado” are similar in several ways. They are both evil in many ways. A piece of evidence for General Zaroff Is when he put lights out in the Caribbean sea to make a false channel which caused Rainsford boat to crash on Ship-Trap island in the Mediterranean sea. One for Montresor is when he built a wall around Fortunato. Another piece of evidence that proves General Zaroff is evil is when he threatens Rainsford with his dogs if he does not play the game “I gave him his option of course. He need not to play that game if he doesn't wish to. If he does not wish to hunt, I turn him over to Ivan” (Connell 67).This means that Rainsford does not have to play a game
General Zaroff is uncivilized because he thinks that it is fair and ordinary to kill other humans for his own pleasure. The text shows that he is uncivilized when he replies to Rainsford’s comment about murder and says, “Life is for the strong, and if needs be, taken by the strong” (Connell 14). When Zaroff says that life is for the strong, it reveals that he is a very selfish person who doesn’t care about others. It reveals his perspective on the world. It also shows that General Zaroff is a very one-sided person. Another example that proves that General Zaroff is uncivilized is when he comments
Imagine a time where you had an argument with your parents. What would was the outcome of the argument? Did you get what you wanted? Many may wonder: why would you argue with when you now you most likely will not get your way. Maybe we argue because we are mad and want to vent Maybe we argue because we are convinced we are right even if we realize later that we weren't. We ask ourselves why why do we fight battles we now we are destined to lose? The argument of “The Most Dangerous Game” General Zaroff, hunts trapped sailors on his island. He does this because he is bored of hunting animals he knows he will win. He thinks he will also defeat Rainsford, other great hunter. Zaroff is a murderer and is uncivilized because he killed people
A villain is a character whose thoughts and actions go against the main character and the common good for all people. In the story “The Most Dangerous Game," the character General Zaroff is presented as a villain because of his cruel actions against humans and how selfish he is as a person. The causing of his villainy lets the reader understand the theme of Hunters v. Hunted in “The Most Dangerous Game.”
Zaroff is purely unconscious, and has no compassion or remorse for his actions. His demented mind forces him to believe that it is moral to hunt all living creatures, when in reality he is actually murdering a human soul. The general is sadistic as well as arrogant. He is mentally unstable, insane, and he denies the fact that he is committing something as bad as what he is doing. According to General Zaroff, hunting for him has been consumed by boredom and he no longer sees hunting as a challenge. Consequently, he chooses to hunt a certain “creature” with a higher mental stability of the creatures he has hunted before.(Connell 21) As Zaroff became comfortable with Rainsford, he
In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, General Zaroff is shown as insane, cruel, and arrogant.Zaroff is shown to be insane in the story when he says that he kills humans for fun.“...Did not make me a coldone, cold-blooded murderer.” (Connell 70). This quote shows that Zaroff is psycho because during this part, it is showing that he is a murderer. During the story, Zaroff is also cruel. He shows that he is cruel when He says that he almost makes boats crash into rocks.“Where there’s none: giant rocks with razor edges crouch like a sea monster with wide-open jaws. They can crush a ship as easily as I can crush this nut.”(Connell 70). Zaroff shows that he is mean during this scene because he is making people crash, then giving them hope when
Zaroff is comparing a game of chess to the killing of another human. He is very excited and enthusiastic about the thoughts of hunting a human being. Throughout the story, Zaroff’s cruel and inhuman characteristics are shown by the way he talked to Rainsford about his hunting of humans. He shows no compassion and is actually excited about the possibility of hunting
General Zaroff is killed by Rainsford. Zaroff was killed by Rainsford because Zaroff had killed people for fun. Since General Zaroff did killed humans, karma came back around and he was killed. When Zaroff was hunting for Rainsford, Rainsford sets up a trap and it kills Ivan, Zaroff’s only friend. General Zaroff has killed humans that have their own friends and family. Ivan was taken away from General Zaroff as a sign of karma. While Zaroff is looking to kill Rainsford, Zaroff doesn’t know that Rainsford had a trap set up to kill Zaroff. When General Zaroff realized that he had been set up for a trap, he quickly moved out of the way. Even though Zaroff moved out of the way, the trap still hurt his shoulder. Zaroff had hurt other people during the past games that he had played, so he got hurt playing the game. General Zaroff has learned that what goes around, comes
I read the short story, The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell. In this story a man named Rainsford falls off of a boat by a deserted-looking island. He finds a creepy man named Zaroff that lives on the island, and Zaroff hunts people that he traps on his island. In this journal, I will be evaluating the character of Zaroff.
General Zaroff states, “ Be a realist. The world is made up of two classes- the hunters and the huntees. Luckily, you and I are hunters.” ( pg 49) In this quote General Zaroff doesn’t think of hunting as a sport but as a correlation straight to real life. The quote shows that General Zaroff has an incredibly disgusting way of looking at life and everybody in it. General Zaroff’s insanity is shown because he think of everything besides himself as huntees and this shows he is a murderer. “ I hunt the scum of the earth- sailors from tramp ships, lascars, blacks, chinese, and mongrels.”( pg 49) This quote is saying that General Zaroff thinks that murder is a game, and he doesn’t feel bad about killing anyone of his hunts. This tells us that hunting/killing humans is a normal hobby for him and he does it often. The quote shows that General Zaroff’s mind is unstable and his thoughts are very distasteful. “ This is why I use them. It gives me pleasure. They can reason, after a fashion.” ( pg 50) General Zaroff is basically saying that he likes using humans for the hunt because it gives him pleasure. He is unbothered at the fact he is taking a human life away for a exhilarating game. When he says killing people because it brings him pleasure since they try to reason with him, but he puts himself in a position where he looks insane and murderous. It shows General Zaroff’s insane way of thinking and his thoughts on
What do you think the phrase beast at bay means? Why is this appropriate for the story?
In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game”, General Zaroff is characterized as a cold blooded, devious, and murderous man. Zaroff shows little remorse for human life as he does not care that he kills hundreds of sailors. When he is talking to Rainsford, he says this, “I hunt the scum of the earth.”(49)Rainsford is horrified by this, as most other humans would be. Zaroff does not seem to bother how he kills his victims, and he does not even give them a fair chance. Zaroff says multiple times throughout the story that he values his dogs more than the humans he kills. He treats them like livestock, training them and feeding them well, until eventually he makes them play his game, which is nothing more than an entertaining way to kill the lowest
