In the novel The Scarlet Letter, the ambiguous narrator uses third person omniscient when telling the story. Third person omniscient is a point of view where the narrator knows all the thoughts, actions, and feelings of all characters. The narrator may move from character to character to show how each one contributes to the plot. Although, in The Scarlet Letter the reader can sense partisanship from the narrator. It is easy to recognize by the tone and environment that the characters of Hester and Dimmesdale are shown that the narrator tells their unfortunate stories differently and with more pity towards the other. From the very beginning, Reverend Dimmesdale is perceived by his congregation as being very afflicted by this whole Hester Prynne scandal. The narrator can also come off as a little sarcastic in this passage referring to the pastor as “godly” when one usually associates the profession with a God-bidding man.

“Poor, miserable man! what right had infirmity like his to burden itself with crime? Crime is for the iron-nerved, who have their choice either to endure it, or, if it press too hard, to exert their fierce and savage strength for a good purpose, and fling it off at once!”

This passage from chapter 12 is good example at how the narrator becomes involved with the characters throughout the novel. The narrator’s tone is pitiful here and he is voicing his own opinions about Dimmesdale and how he feels about the way the character is handling the crime he has committed. The narrator does not seem to be just a story teller but a witness in the events that took place between the Reverend and Hester.
