“Hmmm… Cats” Have you ever wondered how some species of cats have short hair and long hair? How each species has a specific pattern on its coat? Well a breed is caused by a genetic mutation in cats genes. Breeding is when you put two animals of either the same or of different breeds but of the same species and also of course of the opposite sex so they can natural consume more of their kind. Animal breeders classify the mating of father and daughter, mother and son, or full brothers and sisters as inbreeding; the mating of close but of not so direct relatives, such as cousins, is called line breeding. “Only a small percentage of house cats in the U.S. are pedigreed...” (“Cat Breeds”). “... we turned wildcats into house cats by selective breeding that changed size, color, and demeanor…” (Weintraub). Selective breeding the intention of producing an offspring that eliminates a trait or has alluring characteristics of the two animals that were deliberately mating. The top ten pedigreed cats from 1979 to 2005 were Persians, Maine Coons, Exotic, Siamese, Abyssinian, Ragdoll, Birman, American Shorthair, Oriental, and Tonkinese (“Breed Registration for the Top 10 Pedigreed Cats”).
According to An Instant Guide to Cats , there is no universal agreement on specific features and attributes for being grouped and considered distinct. At any level of difference a breed can be recognized (Pg.10). Cat breeds vary in color, body, eyes, and etc.. Breeds are categorized by the characteristics
The first thing temple Grandin explains is that cats domesticated themselves because early human civilizations had lots of mice for the cats to eat and pray on. Then she explains that when cats were domesticated there brains got smaller and they purr even when they are adults also meow. The next big point that the author explains that cats are closer to their wild counterparts than any other animal which means that they can easily return to the wild than say dogs. Temple Grandin then explains that cats weren't domesticated when dogs were because early humans wanted something to protect them and the cat being small could fight like a dog could. Then she explains that domesticated cats do not look that much different from non domesticated cats. She says “They evolved some different coat colors, but most
Describing the Poodle as an individual breed is best articulated by whats called a "breed standard." This specific standard is compared with what genetics determine - a dog's physical characteristics, such as height, weight, body type, color, or coat. Breed standards also spell out the breeds desired temperament, personality, and faults. Breed standards assigned by a kennel or dog club may vary slightly from nation to nation, and can change over time.
Have you ever been bitten by a dog or scratched by a cat? I have before and I would take a scratch before another dog bite any day. And thats why I’m telling you these reason why cats are better pets than dogs. Many families become interested in a family pet.
The breed has a fine, smooth, soft, short and glossy coat that comes in a variety of colors and a compact square body. Their coats determine their color that can be fawn, apricot fawn, silver fawn and black but they are the same in every way.
Would you rather have a pet that is messy and needy or a pet that is clean
Have you ever wondered how we got different types of dogs or cats? Artificial selection! Around 27,000-40,000 years ago the hunter-gatherers began to tame wolves to have as hunting companions. The people would eventually begin to breed their wolves so that they would have certain traits like hair length, color, size, sharpness of teeth, tail length, and just about everything in between. When people realized that they could control how animals would look, they started experimenting to see what all they could make. This is how artificial selection works. Humans discover that they can change an animal's characteristics, they discover traits that make the animals more pleasing to people (desired traits), and they use these traits to make animals that are best suited for whatever people want and/or need them
As the owner of three unique pups, I know that dogs’ variances are numerous. Any one who owns a dog knows that it has a mind of its own, and therefore a unique personality. Having had many dogs throughout my life, I have found that dogs fit into three classifications.
A gravesite in Cyprus about 10,000 years ago contained remains of a wildcat with a human body. In the East about 10,000 year ago 600 million cats was traced back to five female species, the modern day cat is descended from their wild ancestor called Felis Silvestris Lybica. Cat breeds have been emerging for over 150 years, there is so many different kind of cat breeds. Almost every cat looks different in some way. “National academy of sciences study analyzed eight bones from at least two cats, the bones were found in Quanhucun, in China’s Shaanxi Province”(“Cats Were Domesticated At Least 5,300 Years Ago, Study Shows”). The main way of figuring out how far cats have been domesticated is by finding their bones. Finding the bones show everything you need to know about cats really. Researchers have found bones of multiple cats that they believed lived in Rural China with farmers to help catch mice, help around the
I think dogs are better than cats for many reasons. I’m sure it is not without reason that dogs are called “man’s best friend.” They are loyal, obedient, and also protective. Even if their attempts at protection are sometimes unnecessary, at least they try.
Thesis/Preview: Today, I will discuss 4 of the 41 fascinatingly distinct cat breeds: Siamese, Manx, Chartreux, and Turkish Angora.
People seem to think that dogs are extremely smart, but are they still smarter when it comes to wolves?
While dogs and cats are a lot alike, you have to consider their differences before you choose your pet. As mentioned before cats do not require cleaning nor exercising or training, while dogs are in need of all these things. If you want to raise a pet then, try to manage your time before you choose your best
The goal of selective breeding in animals is to either produce a pure breed (a breed that will consistently produce offspring with the desired traits or to simply improve the quality of the desired trait/phenotype (homozygous). This is achieved by inbreeding (where two closely related individuals mate and produce offspring)
Another difference between cats and dogs is their social interactions. Dogs are more of pack animals. Members of their pack or family are very critical to them. They look for a
As the years have gone on, selective breeding has become much easier than it used to be. With the knowledge that we have now, we can now know whether the two animals we are breeding together; like a munchkin cat with a non-munchkin cat will be successful or not. Because of the research we have today, we can go back in a cat's records from their breeder and find out if the offspring will be successful or not. A way breeders can see if the genes from the cats are compatible, is with a testcross. For this, the breeders will need to know the dominant and recessive genes the parent cats have. If both of the parent cats had a recessive gene in their genotype that was not expressed in its phenotype it would result in the offspring either being born
