In early 1900’s scientist of the world discovered that a few German physicists had learned the secret of splitting atoms, and they would be able to utilize energy to produce a bomb that would cause total destruction. Albert Einstein, who fled Nazi Germany and fled to United States, informed President Roosevelt about the capability of splitting atoms. Along with Einstein fellow scientist Fermi convinced Roosevelt to develop an atomic research program. In 1941 United Stated begin to design and build the atomic bomb which coded the Manhattan project. In 1942 Fermi had produced nuclear chain reaction. The development of the atomic bomb took place in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Oppenheimer was the leading scientist in putting all the pieces together. There were over a hundred thousand people involved in preparing the bomb to be tested. December of 1945 the testing for the first atomic bomb took place in New Mexico. One of the reasons that the atomic bomb was developed insuring that United States would be the only super power in the world and to fight off Nazi aggression. They wanted to convince Japan to surrender. It was built to increase army capabilities in current and future wars. Also, later in the WWII it would be one of the biggest …show more content…
One reason was United States was retaliating on Japan for attacking Pearl Harbor. Another reason was Truman’s decision to use the atomic bomb on Japan was for the purpose of saving lives and ending the war quickly in order to prevent a disastrous land invasion (holtz.org). The main reason I believe was to show the world that America was the only true super power. The Revisionist believed that Truman had alternative motives for use of the atomic bomb. They believed he wanted see the results of an atomic bomb being dropped in a major city and see the destruction it would cause. And also, they believed he wanted to show imperialism and dominance to the rest of the
From the perspective of the traditionalists, Truman was more strongly influenced by a desire to end the war immediately, and the desire of the American people to extract some measure of revenge on Japan. The Unites States, before the dropping of the bomb, had suffered an unprovoked attack from Japan at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The Japanese destroyed most of the American pacific
This thought brings me to my next motive of why Truman might have dropped the bomb. I do not think Truman was unaware of the lasting effects of the atom bomb, but by the time these facts were presented to him, piled upon facts about the actual bomb and the projects supporting them, it was to late to change his decision. He needed to save face for America (which brings me to the next motive of pressure) even if it public opinion was not his main concern. Truman did not want to look soft upon the Japanese, something further consideration and negation of the plan to bomb would have caused in some officials eye's. Also, Truman and much of the rest of the nation did not like seeing the U.S. as moral failures like many other nations. Who knows what the reaction to the President's decision would have been like if he had decided to let an invasion with hundreds and thousands of our men involved take place.
During World War II, there was much advancement in technology that led to the destruction of many countries after World War II. New advanced weaponry of World War II or “The Great War” led a lack of new skills that led to many casualties because of the advancement in technology. The most significant weapon that was used and had a huge impact in the World War II was the creation of the atomic bomb. This weapon was so significant because as soon as this weapon was dropped, it would immediately cause great destruction from its explosion. The United States was the first to create and use the atomic bomb. In July 1945, the Manhattan Project, which was the creation of the atomic bomb, was successfully tested the first atomic bomb in New
Why President Truman Decided to Drop Atomic Bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki At 02:45 August 6th 1945, the B-29 Superfortress the Enola Gay took off from the specially lengthened North Field on the Island of Tinian in the Marianas. The plane piloted by Colonel Paul Tibbets was 7 tons. At 0815 hours the bomb doors of the B-29 opened and flying at approximately 32,000 ft the uranium based atom bomb code-named “Little Boy” was unleashed upon the city of Hiroshima. Over 70,000 men women and children were killed by blast alone.
Harry S. Truman was the 33rd president of the United States of America. He became president because Franklin D. Roosevelt died during his term; Truman was Roosevelt’s Vice President at the time. Truman found himself facing some of the greatest challenges met by any 20th-century president. He discovered in July 1945 that some scientists working for the United States government had successfully tested an atomic bomb in New Mexico. President Truman wanted to use the atomic bomb to end the war in the Pacific, but with fewest U.S. catastrophes. This decision was one of the most momentous decisions of the 20th century and extremely perplexing when analyzed.
This would have been the next best alternative because then we would have still had a bomb to use just in case if the U.S was in a pickle. So then it would have been like a last resort in another point in time or they could have modified it to make it better than how it was before so it could be like a last resort to to just finish a country because they were going to do something bad. But talking about the pros and the cons Then Japan would have had surrendered to the bomb once seeing all of its power and thinking about its people. But if the bomb failed they could have been motivated to fight in the war still because then they would have known the U.S has no power in being able to destroy Japan with just one massive blow. So then it could have been like a second wind for Japan because they would have nothing to fear if they go and try to destroy the
The United States made a critical decision to use the atomic bomb not once, but twice, during World War II. This decision was dangerous and reckless, in my opinion. The use of the atomic bomb brought many innocent lives to a tragic and inhumane end. There are several alternatives the United States could have considered over using this weapon of mass destruction to make their presence known during the war.
“On August 6, 1945, the world was changed forever with the denotation of an atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima, followed three days later with the use of another bomb over Nagasaki”1. The United States use of atomic weapons on Japan in 1945 was an event that triggered the fear of many individuals because it was during the period of war. The use of atomic weapons by the United States however, was justified because they had to end the war quicker, they intended to do minimal damage, and they had no other alternative.
Imagine, being the one to make the call that's going to end thousands of lives. On August 6, 1945 president Harry Truman made the call that would change the history books forever, and dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan killing 100,000 people, and injuring 40,000 more. "To Father Kleinsorge, an Occidental, the silence in the grove by the river, where hundreds of gruesomely wounded suffered together, was one of the most dreadful and awesome phenomena of his whole experience." Hersey, page 47. Many of the wounded people died due to injuries that had there been enough doctors and nurses they may have survived, but many of them died during the blast. "Of a hundred and fifty doctors in the city, sixty-five were already dead and most of the rest were wounded. Of 1,789 nurses, 1,654 were dead or too badly hurt to work. In the biggest hospital, that of the Red Cross, only six doctors out of thirty were able to function, and only ten nurses out of more than two hundred." Hersey, page 19, The United States dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan on August 9th, 1945 just 3 days after Hiroshima killing an additional 80,000 people. If I was in Harry Truman's shoes during that time period I would have made the choice to drop the atom bomb on Hiroshima. This was during a time where counties were fighting to show how
There was no stopping Truman with the judgement he made on using the atomic bombs to end the war quickly. With the success of developing the atomic bombs, it was time to find targets to potential destroy. When it came to choosing what Japanese city to bomb first there had been four cities chosen as possible targets: Hiroshima, Kokura, Nagasaki, and Niigata (Kyoto was the first choice until it was removed from the list by Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson because it was a religious city). The cities were chosen because they had been relatively untouched during the war. The best option that President Truman wanted to bomb was Hiroshima. The reason why Hiroshima was considered a target was it held a center for shipbuilding and armaments manufacturing.
There was also the question of time. The atomic bomb was by far the quickest way that America could see for the ending of the war, and they were eager to end the war as before long, Russia would become involved making a heavier casualty rate inevitable. America were also a very powerful country now they had the development of the Atomic Bomb, it would have been a waste to not be able to show their true power and the true destruction they could use through the bomb. There is also the point that the Americans were looking for revenge against the Japanese, as they had injured and killed many American soldiers, and even more to come, had the Americans not taken quick action.
All these benefits of the atomic sound great, but in the opinion of a young man who could be sent off to war, it is scary thinking about bombs. The first dropping of the bomb was needed to help this country out, but now countries take bombs to a different level. They will use the bomb whenever they feel like they are needed to ensure they are a step ahead of other countries. Yes, bombs are needed to help if wars, but there are so many other solutions to end war. The first bomb drop also had many negative affects just like, “…other countries building their own bombs, thousands of innocent people died in Japan, so much money was sued in making the atomic bombs, caused even more anger with countries and can cause leaders to use bombs for war and other situations as well.” (Apecsecadmin, Cons of Dropping the Atomic Bomb, March 17th, 2014). Once again, bombs in general are just dangerous and should not be used. Even if you use bombs anything old cause it to go off and kill even more people and no one can control it. People need to end the atomic bomb, due to the amount of damage that it can do. Because even though it is one small thing in this world it can make a huge difference. It is important to think about all the children, adults and families that are involved with atomic
Truman agreed with these people’s perspective, knowing the full capabilities the bombs have, but was reminded that even after the war, the USSR was the only superpower in the world that could compete with the U.S and the U.S fears the threatening force of the USSR. Other documents recalled that the Atomic bomb was necessary and that with its use can come another good thing, to threaten the Soviet Union and making them to know their place. However, because of the detonation of the Atomic bomb, this caused a chain reaction after the war and led up to the events to the Cold War. Even though there was a more peaceful approach to stop the War with Japan, the United States had to use the bomb to scare the Soviet Union hoping that they would not threaten the United States in the
Truman’s decision of using the atomic bombs would have been my decision as well. Due to Japan not surrendering to the U.S warning and continued being a threat , the smartest decision would be to bomb the cities that are most likely have more ability to make war. I do believe that the other three options could have been effective , but this option was a faster and safer solution for U.S at least. Things going out the way they did after the attack, it proved that it was very effective. After the “ Fat Man “ was dropped in Nagasaki on August 9, 1945 the second bomb that killed 70,000 instantly , Japan finally surrendered on August 10 , 1945. If other options would have been chosen , things could have taken a different turn and lead to a longer
The US warned that if the Japanese did not surrender they would expect a rain of terror from the air. The development of these bombs was hard and stressful, but allowed the US to win the war. The Atomic Bomb was a huge part of WW2 and its development took many tests, lots of discovery, and when finally developed, allowed America to end the war with Japan.
