Athletes using performance enhancing drugs has been a problem since the late 1990’s. For the athletes the use of steroids are cheap, easy to access, and effective; that is until now. Collegiate Student Athletes should be drug tested every season for illegal substances before they are allowed to play. There are many reasons why these athletes should be tested, such as the negative effect steroids have on their bodies, the drugs are illegal to use, and if caught using these drugs the athletes careers could be over. First off, Steroids are one of the major illegal drugs that athletes use to enhance their performance on the field. Anabolic steroids are a form of synthetic testosterone that may be prescribed by doctors but are illegal
Steroid abuse has become a huge problem in professional sports today. Athletes are now using steroids to gain a competitive edge over their opponents. Also, the athletes are using the steroids to recover quickly from major injuries or surgeries. Many former superstar athletes have been caught taking steroids during the season and offseason.
One of the biggest controversies that surrounds the use of steroids and comes under debate numerous times is the unfair advantage that steroids give to the athletes who use them. The use of anabolic steroids by athletes, professional or amateur, is a form of cheating. They are illegal substances that help an athlete gain an advantage over another. What it does cause is the athlete who does not use steroids to have to think about and even consider taking steroids to be able to compete.
“…medical researchers believe that between 1 and 3 million youths and adults have taken anabolic steroids in one form or another specifically to enhance their looks or athletic performances,” stated Nuwer (Nuwer, 61). As astounding as these figures are, the number of performance drug users is steadily increasing. With this progressively increasing numbers, it is projected that millions more will use steroids in the immediate future (Newer, 61). Athletes have always sought an advantage in competition even if ignoring the law and their health if necessary. Using drugs of any sort to facilitate an athlete’s athletic ability should be illegal. The use of performance enhancing drugs is not only detrimental to the user but it also creates an
Dillon Panthers star running back Brian “Smash” Williams, is known for making a big mistake. The mistake of turning towards steroids, and allowing them to take over his life. Williams was told by his football coach that he had to become stronger if he wanted to be able to make it to College Football. Since Williams decided to make the decision of turning towards steroids he became angry, irritable, and frustrated. Once caught, he got suspended from some of the most important games of the season and had to regain the trust of those who trusted him most.
Drugs are prohibited for use to athletes. Playing sports is a privilege and using drugs is a violation of the athletic program. Student athletes should be drug tested in order to keep performance enhancing drugs out of sports and to set the standard for what it will be like in college. It is an unfair advantage to other athletes when some are using performance enhancing drugs and it also gives the team and school a bad image. Drug use also becomes a health issue and the school will more than likely be held responsible to an extent because they should be more aware of what is going on with their
Performance enhancing drugs, or steroids, are defined as substances used to improve physical performance. There are many types of steroidal performance enhancers. The first of these performance enhancing drugs are anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids are also known as androgen steroids, and they are used to increase the muscle mass and strength of a person. A natural anabolic steroid is testosterone, which your body naturally produces. Some athletes take straight testosterone which is another way to boost your athletic performance. This has the same effect as anabolic steroids, but it is natural and can be found within the body. Anabolic steroids are so effective and appealing to athletes, because they allow athletes to recover faster from a
Over the past century using steroids or performance enhancing drugs has been a massive issue in today’s athletic society. Using steroids is unfair to athletes and their fans, because it gives certain sportsman an unfair advantage. Some athletes try to win at all costs even if sometimes that cost is there career, achievements, and even there lifes.
In many states and surrounding countries athletes are using what are labeled as Anabolic Steroids. Anabolic steroids are a synthetic derivative of a naturally produced hormone testosterone, it promotes the growth of muscle (NIDA 2004). This kind of steroid is usually prescribed by doctors to treat patients for conditions such as ones who have delayed puberty or people who have medical problems that causes low amounts of testosterone. Anabolic steroids are prepared in the arrangement of a capsule, shot, ointment, or salve. Though this kind of steroid makes muscles bigger and bones stronger anabolic steroids can cause serious if not fatal effects in the body. Men as well as women using this steroid can have various problems and complications if not monitored. The majority of people who use this steroid are athletes. Athletes want a bigger and better body to improve how well they play a certain sport or how they look, therefore many use and abuse this drug illegally and having life changing consequences later.
"Steroids" has more than one construal. Your body naturally engenders some steroids, to avail you fight stress and grow more immensely colossal during puberty. (But your body kens just the right amount that you require, so there's no desideratum to take any extra.) There's withal a type of medicine called steroids that people might take if they have pain, asthma, or a skin quandary. But these aren't the kind of steroids getting attention in sports. When people verbally express steroids, they often mean illicit anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids are artificially engendered hormones that are identically tantamount to, or akin to, androgens, the male-type sex hormones in the body. The most puissant of these is testosterone. Anabolic steroids can be taken in the form of pills, powders, or injections.
Steroids are drugs that are used by athletes to increase their muscle strength and power. Steroids may be taken in pill form or injected. Steroids that are taken by mouth are often more dangerous to the liver. Those that are injected often remain in the body for long periods.
Sometimes professional athletes take a shortcut to gain an edge over competition. The resource that they use to get this edge is called an Anabolic Steroid. Anabolic steroids are synthetic variations of the male sex hormone testosterone. The proper term for these compounds is anabolic-androgenic steroids. Although these athletes gain temporary success, there eventually are negative effects, they could be either long term and short term. In terms of history In the 1956 Olympics, Soviet athletes, especially wrestlers, performed at exceptionally high levels. After learning that those athletes were using testosterone, an American physician named Dr. Zeigler created a more selective form of what we know as anabolic steroids.
The reason why athletes are so tempted to take drugs for an event, is all because of the fame you get when an athlete's comes first in the sport. Studies shows that companies assign the best athletes in movies, commercials , and sponsorships, which means they get paid each time the movie/commercial gets paid. Did you know that when athletes take steroids their chances of dying in the next five years is very high. The reason why this happens is because the human body can’t develop so fast in a short period of time.
Student athletes have a ritual before every game it's either good or bad. Some of my closest friends do drugs like every single day. Especially the football players taking steroids to get them stronger. Since steroids make them think they will be the strongest and best player they choose to do it. However, they should be forced to take a drug test in order so they can be able to play. That way you can make sure that no other school has an advantage over the other. Playing in a school sport is a privilege using drugs is a violation and should not be permitted to participate.
Day by day professional athletes are being praised for their ability and accomplishments in their respective sports. The professional athletes that are succeeding the most are generally using performance enhancing drugs, other known as anabolic steroids (Mayo Clinic). Anabolic steroids are drugs which imitate the effect of the male sex hormone, Testosterone. The cells producing protein increase and then turn into cellular tissue build up in the muscles. The professional athletes that are taking advantage of the performance enhancing drugs, or steroids, should be prohibited from their particular sports, if not terminated from the
“People take steroids because they BELIEVE they have no other way. Steroids are about comparing yourself to other people but if you just become the best YOU, you will find out that you will never need them”- Howard Berman. Drug testing is necessary for the survival of sports. Professional athletes earn great amounts of money and with it comes major responsibilities. All of them represent their country, their state, their city, their school, their family, their team, their friends and their fans. BY doing drugs to improve their athletic performance, they let down all that people that believed in them and the athlete himself. Those athletes ruin the fair play, their reputation, their health and all the hope people had on them. They throw away the effort, time, and work, their competitors and teammates put in the game. And the worst thing, the steal that moment of glory. The use of drugs to improve an athletic performance is cheating and it could lead into death; therefore, sport organizations should make drug tests harder and more often so there are not cheaters.
