Why Do Collegiate Student Athletes Use Steroid?

Steroid abuse has become a huge problem in professional sports today. Athletes are now using steroids to gain a competitive edge over their opponents. Also, the athletes are using the steroids to recover quickly from major injuries or surgeries. Many former superstar athletes have been caught taking steroids during the season and offseason.

One of the biggest controversies that surrounds the use of steroids and comes under debate numerous times is the unfair advantage that steroids give to the athletes who use them.  The use of anabolic steroids by athletes, professional or amateur, is a form of cheating.  They are illegal substances that help an athlete gain an advantage over another.  What it does cause is the athlete who does not use steroids to have to think about and even consider taking steroids to be able to compete.

Drugs are prohibited for use to athletes. Playing sports is a privilege and using drugs is a violation of the athletic program. Over the past century using steroids or performance enhancing drugs has been a massive issue in today’s athletic society. Using steroids is unfair to athletes and their fans, because it gives certain sportsman an unfair advantage. Some athletes try to win at all costs even if sometimes that cost is there career, achievements, and even there lifes.

In many states and surrounding countries athletes are using what are labeled as Anabolic Steroids. Anabolic steroids are a synthetic derivative of a naturally produced hormone testosterone, it promotes the growth of muscle (NIDA 2004). This kind of steroid is usually prescribed by doctors to treat patients for conditions such as ones who have delayed puberty or people who have medical problems that causes low amounts of testosterone. Anabolic steroids are prepared in the arrangement of a capsule, shot, ointment, or salve. Though this kind of steroid makes muscles bigger and bones stronger anabolic steroids can cause serious if not fatal effects in the body. Men as well as women using this steroid can have various problems and complications if not monitored. The majority of people who use this steroid are athletes. Athletes want a bigger and better body to improve how well they play a certain sport or how they look, therefore many use and abuse this drug illegally and having life changing consequences later.

Studies shows that companies assign the best athletes in movies, commercials , and sponsorships, which means they get paid each time the movie/commercial gets paid. Did you know that when athletes take steroids their chances of dying in the next five years is very high. The reason why this happens is because the human body can’t develop so fast in a short period of time.

Student athletes have a ritual before every game it's either good or bad. Some of my closest friends do drugs like every single day. Especially the football players taking steroids to get them stronger. Since steroids make them think they will be the strongest and best player they choose to do it. However, they should be forced to take a drug test in order so they can be able to play. That way you can make sure that no other school has an advantage over the other. Playing in a school sport is a privilege using drugs is a violation and should not be permitted to participate.

Day by day professional athletes are being praised for their ability and accomplishments in their respective sports. The professional athletes that are succeeding the most are generally using performance enhancing drugs, other known as anabolic steroids (Mayo Clinic). Drug testing is necessary for the survival of sports. Professional athletes earn great amounts of money and with it comes major responsibilities. All of them represent their country, their state, their city, their school, their family, their team, their friends and their fans. BY doing drugs to improve their athletic performance, they let down all that people that believed in them and the athlete himself. Those athletes ruin the fair play, their reputation, their health and all the hope people had on them. They throw away the effort, time, and work, their competitors and teammates put in the game. And the worst thing, the steal that moment of glory. The use of drugs to improve an athletic performance is cheating and it could lead into death; therefore, sport organizations should make drug tests harder and more often so there are not cheaters.
