The Renaissance period is known for the revival of the classical art and intellect born in ancient Greece and Rome. The Renaissance is also a time that is marked by growth, exploration, and rebirth. The Italian Renaissance started in Florence and progressively made its way into Venice and then into the great city of Rome. During the Renaissance, Rome was home to some of the most renowned works of art and the finest architectural masterpieces in the world - too many that still holds true today. Along with the delicate architecture and grand artistry, Rome was also home to a mixture of people and cultures. It is in this cultural context and through the book A Street Life in Renaissance Rome: A Brief History with Documents, that understanding how men, woman, and specifically Jews and Christians lived in Rome becomes important to better understand this period of renewal.

The Italian Renaissance was a period in history unlike most others; this was an era of ingenuity, expansion, and enlightenment that would revolutionize both society as the people of the Renaissance knew it to be, and as the future generations of individuals across the globe understand it today. Florence held itself out to be the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, yet the people of this renaissance era never lost sight of the Greek and Roman heritage. The following essay will discuss the varying ways in which Florence was the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, and will provide the reader with examples that demonstrate Greco-Roman ideas and practices in the Italian Renaissance.

All around Louisiana, the people celebrate Mardi Gras in early spring. Urban cities such as New Orleans and Baton Rouge utilize fancy bright lighted parades, celebrity kings and queens, and shiny beads to celebrate the festivities. Growing up in south Louisiana, I attended many of these parades in the Big Easy. My grandparents would tell stories of rural Mardi Gras and the Cajun culture. Coming from a heavily Italian family line, there are some traditions and rituals that we do and some that we do not do because we have become Americanized. For example, there are certain Italian foods that typically do not appear at the dinner tables of American families during holidays. During Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, my family makes a special Italian appetizer called “antipasto”, which is generally spicy Italian offerings, cold cuts, and special Italian cheeses. Also during those dinners, there is a heavy pasta dish that is eaten before the main course. Mardi Gras is a Christian holiday, which was brought by the French when they colonized a part of the United States of America. The first time that Mardi Grass was celebrated in America, was on March 3, 1699 (History, 2016) in what is today known as Louisiana, later in this carnival would be moved to New Orleans. Since the carnival was moved out of New Orleans, every year is celebrated between February and March; it all depends when is going to be Easter.

It was first celebrated by a secret society called Masque de la Mobile, which lasted until 1709 and then transitioned into the Boeuf Gras Society, which held parades for over a century until finally dissolving (Mardi Gras History). There would be a procession with a giant bulls head at the helm, which was pushed through the city on wheels by a large group of men. Later, the parade used an actual bull draped in white cloth. Boxing Day (Dec 26) and New Year’s Day (Jan 1), both Garifuna and non-Carib blacks celebrate the Jonkonnu Festival, also known as John Canoe. Jonkonnu is a dancing parade of ancient African rituals with a Mardi Gras style. The dancers wear costumes and masks as they dance from house to house. The dancers are followed by two drumers and a female chorus. The music played is called goombay, which is a blend of ancient African and Caribbean sounds. The Jonkonnu Festival is held in Jamaica and the Bahamas as well, with some differences.
