Fast food industry is growing in America because people prefer to buy food that is cheap and readymade. Hence, this limits their options of food choice. People are restricted to buy food such as can food, packet food, and processed food which are cheap and fast to cook. People making unhealthy food choices require a multidisciplinary approach to nutrition education. The three most important points to include in a public nutrition program are as follows:- first, teach public about health consequences- “ obese children and adolescents are more likely to have risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and Type 2 diabetes” (Food and Nutrition Service [FNS], 2010, p. 3). Second, educate the
Obesity is becoming one of the major problems for society. All Americans have become vulnerable victims of their own products of food, also considered as their prosperity. Many health doctors believe that the key to the United States obesity problems lay in the not healthy(toxic) environment in which people work, live and spend their quality time. America is an environment where supersized portions are normal, and huge grocery stores fully stocked with snacks like cookies, frozen foods, and many sugary cereals as cinnamon toast crunch. Temptations to eat a high-calorie meals are everywhere. American children are exposed to delicious, savoring junk food on commercials every time they turn the TV. Especially in poor neighborhoods, it has become
In America almost two thirds of the nation is overweight. That is about 79.6 million people who are obese. Fast food is without a doubt the problem why these statistics are so high. According to Shannon Brownlee, a journalist for the Sacramento Bee “ It’s Portion Distortion That Makes America Fat” she mentions how fast food corporations are luring buyers into their offers . In another article by David Weintraub “The Battle Against Fast Food Begins in the Home” he focus more on self responsibility rather than fast food restaurants being convenient everywhere you go. In America, the obesity epidemic is caused by the lack of parent not taking full responsibility for their childrens health, as well as fast food industries distorting portion sizes in order to make more
Fast food has a harmful effect on society because it can cause obesity. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry believes obesity “Overweight children are much more likely to become overweight adults unless they adopt and maintain healthier patterns of eating and exercise.” (parag. 1).The causing and treating of obesity is complex but it is the most recognizable disease. Consistently eating fast food and a poor can lead to obesity in anyone. The risks of obesity include an increased risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. According to the American Heart Association, fast food “Studies have shown that over the past four decades, consumption of food eaten away from home has also risen alarmingly” (parag. 8). This means that fast food is high in fat, sugar, salt, carbs, calories, saturated and trans fats. This type of eating leads to a higher body mass index or gained weight. Children and adolescents are at a
In David Zinczenko’s article “Don’t Blame the Eater” he focuses on the fast food industry and their role in the increasing health and obesity issues of our nation’s children, as well as these issues potentially becoming a serious problem that we will all have to deal with if we collectively don’t do something about it now. When it comes to the topic of fast food, most of us can agree that it is not the best source of nutrition. It is unhealthy and can be the cause of many serious health issues with our children such as obesity related Type 2 diabetes, stomach ulcers and even heart disease, high cholesterol, sleep apnea or even cancer. We can even agree that fast-food diets are a major contributing factor to
Throughout the years in the United States, fast food has become the prominent diet of citizens. Many people do not realize the harmful effects of eating fast food on a daily basis. Many people in the United States are use to consuming foods that are processed with sugars and other chemicals, without being aware of eating a unhealthy diet can increase the risks of being obese ;as well as, having numerous health issues. Although people try their best to eat healthy and more productive they do not know what foods to eat or whether if it is healthy for them. In the articles “Don’t Blame the Eater by David Zincekino and “Escape from the Western Diet” by Michael Pollan. There were a number of similarities and differences in the details highlighted in these two articles.
Americans over the years have adopted a fast food, sedentary lifestyle, which consequently has led to a decline in overall health. Studies show the American overweight and obese community has increased greatly over the past 30 years.1 United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is a federal department responsible for the legislating of government policy on all aspects of agriculture, including farming and food. Public health professionals debate the root of unhealthy lifestyles and work together to combat nutrition choices and nutrition related illnesses. The USDA has worked with scientists, public figures and the community to increase and support healthy choices. Community and national program initiatives have impacted the
As a business grows, it only makes sense to expand; supply must meet demand after all. The issue many Americans face, including myself, has to do with convenience. Our quest for the easy way out has put us in the position we are today, and we are teaching the youth to do the same. Teaching the youth to follow on the path of those before us, will not stop this epidemic. Fast Food is no longer affecting a small portion of society, it is now affecting the world. Fast Food chains are located in every business hub, tourist destination, and metropolitan area in the world. According to the World Health Organization (2015), international obesity rates have doubled since the 1980s. The lack of nutritional knowledge and bad habits passed from generation to generation, have made this an international crisis and a crucial social issue (Whitney 2002). There are several ways to come back from this crisis, we need to call on the government/state, be conscious of the examples we set, limit advertising, and keep an eye on our
Childhood obesity is the most common pediatric nutritional disorder in the United States (Balog, 2015). Most people believe that the solution to stopping childhood obesity relies entirely on education. Sadly, this is not true. While education is one of the main factors for solving this epidemic, there are many other factors that need to be resolved as well. One cannot rely on the simplistic idea that, once educated, Americans would make the healthiest choices. This is because Americans choose, buy, and consume their food based heavily on the taste, convenience, and economic motivations, not health reasons.
Through television commercials, billboards and magazines advertised food is often sexualized and portrayed as something should be “rewarded” and will instantly make one happy and complete. I also found that each day, Black and Latino adults and children see twice as many high fat, high calories fast food advertisements than White children. More than frequently these fast food and beverage advertisements have little to no nutritional value yet marketers still have the audacity to call these products foods. These children grow up to believe that this is the kind of food that is okay for themselves and their peers to eat without seeing the reality and consequences. Growing up I for one never saw fruits and vegetable on kid television networks, but I definitely remember seeing Cheetos, Skittles, and Burger King. All in all standards should be set be to decrease the amount of low nutritional value food and beverages advertisements in particular those targeting Black and Latino groups. Additionally increasing nutrition education in all schools not only Black and Latino can help teach students to make healthier diet making them more relevant to
Obesity is a trouble that nearly every country in the world is facing, but there is a lot that people can do to repair it. More people die in the United States of too much food than of too little. In the 1970’s, people ate about 2,160 calories per day. Today, people eat around 2,673 calories per day. Americans are eating about 25 percent more calories than in the 1970’s. This happened because both plate sizes and portion sizes have expanded. Food became cheaper and faster to get. It could be difficult for people ages 18 to 25 to have a nice, healthy, home-cooked meal. So, instead of going on an empty stomach, most millennials choose to get unhealthy fast food. Consumers are just as much at fault for their obesity as the fast food
Obesity has substantially increased in the American population, affecting both adults and children. According to the Mayo Clinic, the definition of obesity is defined as a condition of increased body weight that is caused by an excessive accumulation of fat. Many factors contribute to weight gain such as the two important ones, poor diet and physical inactivity. As people are exposed to high fat foods and have very low physical activity, it’s so easy for that person to become overweight or obese. As in today’s society children tend to overeat, many changes in a child’s life are the reason why there is an increase in overeating. The place where children should be fed healthy and should influence them to eat healthy is actually where the problem starts. School cafeterias have been known to serve food with large fat content and low nutrition. School cafeterias even supply students with soda and candy machines (Kempster, 2004). According to a study done by King et al. (1999) has shown that fruits and raw vegetables given in school cafeterias has decreased substantially. Instead they provide unhealthy meals for these children like, pizza, tater tots, and many other numerous high level fat foods. At school children should have the access to eat healthy, however they are exposed to fast food choices everyday, making it difficult to support healthy eating (Kuntzman, 2004). The lack of physical activity is another major factor in the cause of childhood obesity. Due to the increase
Just take a short drive down any main street in a popular city and you will drive past no less than eight fast food restaurants and three convenient stores within a couple of blocks from each other. If that is the route driven on your way home every day from work and you don’t feel up to making a home cooked meal, what do you think your family will be eating that night. It is sometimes cheaper to buy a cheeseburger off of the value menu rather than cooking one at home. Fast food is a large reason why childhood obesity takes place. Fast food restaurants do not
Fast food has become one of the biggest industries in America. Fast food is all around the world now, it is in every continent and it is very popular. Fast food has taken over the world, fast food expands from Asia to America and is popular all around the globe. Fast food is cheaper than most other foods and that is a big factor in why it is so popular. Fast food is popular because it is convenient, not expensive, and easy to access at any time of the day.
Fast Food is one the main meals of an American’s daily life. They eat it before work, for breakfast, and even for dinner. The increased consumption of fast foods and other unhealthy items such as soda has led to a rise of obesity among children and teens. Fast food is not the only issue, there is also a lack of physical activity. Obesity has become a more common thing and is causing several health problems such as diabetes type 2 and high cholesterol levels (Dr. Jill Morgan).
Young kids are eating a fast food restaurants and continue to eat fast food as a lifestyle can cause them at an older age to have heart diseases, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and other chronic conditions. If our generation can stop this obesogenic epidemic it could help later generations in their lifestyle. Stopping or lowering the rate of this epidemic as would be a great accomplishment. Brody also states “A typical breakfast was a hot or cold cereal sweetened with raisins or fresh fruit, not a Pop-Tart, jelly doughnut or 500-calorie bagel with 200 calories of cream cheese”(8). This proposes that kids are not being presented better food choices. This will only lead the young kids, teens, and adults to the unhealthy problems that we don’t want and want to get rid of. There are ways to help create a better lifestyle in taking steps in doing things that is healthy for the mind and the
