High School is Starting Too Early for Students High school involves a lot of beneficial aspects including providing education to kids to prepare them for college, providing a social environment, and creating a structured schedule. Although, studies are showing that there is one aspect of high school that could be hurting students, more than helping; the start time is too early. Many states in the U.S. are catching onto how harmful it is for students to have a lack of sleep, and only recently are changes being made. Lack of sleep can lead to obesity, depression, car accidents and an overall lower quality of life (Richmond). All high schools need to be making the change to a later start time to give these students the rest they need. It’s no
In “High Schools Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens” by Michelle Trudeau and “High Schools Will Keep Starting Too Early. Here’s why.” by Dan Weissman they both have their own perspectives on life about school starting times and the problems they may bring to the students of high schools. In Michelle Trudeau’s story she says that the starting times for high schools has many students still very drowsy and tired most of the time having them nod off during school instruction. She states that in an average high school 20% of students fall asleep in class on a typical day. Therefore, in need to prevent this from happening teens need more sleep as opposed to them not getting enough sleep from either staying up late or period as some experts say. There are many ways to add additional support for teens and their sleep.
Research has shown that teenagers experience a change in their internal sleep clocks so that waking up early and going to sleep early are difficult. I agree with the decision to change school times and what it has to offer. This would not only help the teenagers with many things but also accommodate the parents schedules too. I believe that if the school system were to alter the times so that High Schoolers were to wake up later then it would fix various conflicts; teen depression, lack of awareness, and it allows parents to work later.
fatigue overwhelms you the whole day. Now imagine that you slept this was every night. Accomplishing simple tasks would be difficult if one is sleep deprived. Performing at your potential would almost be impossible. In order to get rid of these unforgettable feeling many people would sleep late and go to bed early. But with such early start times for high school many students feel sleep deprived and do not achieve their best. Doing so would improve students health. Some individuals feel that keeping the start times at their current time would be best for parents and school districts. However, many people believe that delaying school start times would positively
How many times has this happened to you; it’s six thirty on a Tuesday morning, your alarm has already gone off twice, your still laying in bed and your bus comes in twenty minutes. This is an everyday occurrence at my house. It is a proven statistic that the average high school student does not get enough sleep. While some experts like Dr. Lee Yanku say “It is not the schools starting time that is the problem as to why students don’t get enough sleep, it is because of facebook, myspace and cell phones” The truth behind it is that we can’t budget sports, homework and extracurricular activities into one day and still get nine hours of sleep. This is hurting student’s academic averages and needs to change. Changing the school time will help
In Michelle Trudeau study, he found out at least 20 percent of high school students fall asleep in class on a typical day. Expert says teens need a lot of sleep, about 9 to 8hr every night. In response to this some school district have tried delaying the opening of high school hours.
Beep beep beep, alarm clocks are going off at 5 in the morning for students to start getting ready for the day. With waking up so early teenagers are not getting the sleep they need to get them through the day. So many factors can affect the sleep of a high schooler. Schools should start later in the day so students have enough time to sleep and extracurricular activities they are involved in. Many people believe that school start times should stay where they are because you have more time afterwards to still do your activities and homework. Sleep is important in everyday life. It helps you stay awake during the day. It is a different cost going into changing school times With pushing back the hours students will still have
High school students spend seven hours a day in school, five days a week. To put this into a greater perspective that is 35 hours a week, 154 hours a month and approximately 1,358 hours a year. Numerous high school students feel that delaying the school start time by one hour would benefit their grades and mood because of sleep gained. It is important for those challenging the current start time to take into consideration that one who spends 35 hours a week in school may be sleep deprived due to other reasons, such as time management. High school starting an hour later would not be beneficial because scheduling would be difficult for parents and time would be drained from extra activities. There are various alternatives for tired students other than a later start time.
The debate about school start times being too early has been going on for years. However, no matter the final decision, elementary, middle, and high schools will all be affected. The fact that some students are too tired to function so early in the morning, and schools still start early is very appalling. I, personally, feel that school start times are too early. There are numerous obstacles we face in changing school start times, but together we can overcome them.Students need their sleep. When pupils are too tired to focus in class, they do poorly on tests, and this causes low academics. More sleep will allow a scholar to perform better on their exams. “It’s Not a Teens’ Fault- School Starts Too early” says, “ Evidence also… shows that students overwhelmingly perform better academically when they have adequate sleep.” So, if evidence pointed
Enough sleep is essential to a kid or teen’s health, focus, and to be less sleepy. Studies show that when the school board shifted the school day later in the morning it boosted attendance, test scores, grades and there was a drop in teen car crashes. Scientists say that the average teenager has a hard time falling asleep much before eleven o’clock and still needs eight and a half to nine and a half hours of sleep each night. Others still say that it would affect the amount of time for after school jobs, that the buses would need to change their whole schedule, affect parents work, and it would alter after school activities. For overall better health, we need to change it to a later time. Schools need to start school later
Research has shown that teenagers experience a charge in their internal sleep clocks so that waking up early and going to sleep early are difficult. Should high schools begin later in the day and end later in the day to accommodate students’ natural sleep clocks? This has been a long debate, between politicians and scientists, to change school hours, for the students, to get better sleep. The original hours and set up for schools were to train students to work in factories during the industrial era of the United States. I think school hours should be changed because students will be more productive, students’ stress levels will decrease, and students will have time to sleep properly.
Scientists have stated that between the ages of eleven and 18 young adults go through a phase called the “sleep phase” this means adolescent bodies are designed to fall asleep and wake up later the average teenager needs about nine and a half hours of sleep every night and because of the current school schedule teens only get about seven hours of sleep. The national sleep foundation states that an estimated 28% of students fall asleep in their first period, as a part of that 28% I can confirm that I find it harder to stay awake within the first hour of school. You may ask why students don’t just fall asleep earlier well I as a student can answer that, with the amount of homework, chores, any assignments we did not complete in class, and extracurricular activities we have we don’t get done until late or at least I don’t. Adults will tell you that you extracurricular activities aren’t necessary to have but we’ve also been told by our guidance counselors that they’re in fact very necessary because they make you stand out to colleges. Because of all this we do not get enough sleep and even though some of us students are giving all we have to make it through the eight hour day it does not mean we are giving our best effort. Studies by the National Sleep Foundation have proven that the less amount of sleep people get, the shorter their attention span is making it easier to forget new information faster. I believe that with a later start year round that students academic performances will change drastically for the better. In addition to late start helping grades it would also help with tardies and absences .
On average in today’s society most teens don’t like going to school that early in the morning. To have to wake up so early when they only get about seven hours of sleep, to have students be coming into school at 7:30AM or maybe even earlier in some other schools, is not right. Students need to have time at night to get work done, not only schoolwork but also non-schoolwork. Needless to say, the school schedule for high school students needs to be changed and be made where they go in later. That way they get their work done and get enough sleep because without much sleep students will not be getting high grades. A health survey that the University Health Center administered showed them that one in four students say that lack of sleep has
School is important for every human on this planet, but does it start too early or should we keep the original start time? In “high schools starting later to help sleepy teens” and in “high school will keep starting too early.hears why.” there are multiple reasons why both are valid arguments. Many people are on the either side of the argument. One argument holds over the other in many ways.what are the many arguments for our high schools starting too early?
In the United States just over 90 percent of high school students are sleep deprived. Being sleep deprived increase the chance of suicide attempts by 58 percent. It also increase the change of students to be obese and have diabetes in their adulthood. About 28 percent of students fall asleep during their first hour causing them to have bad grades. Starting school early is also endangering students who drive. They have a higher chance of getting into a car crash because school is starting early. For example, in Chesterfield County, VA high schools start at 7:20am compared to Henrico County, VA where they start at 8:45am, Chesterfield County has a higher rate of teen’s accidents
I agree with this guy, he has good points. I feel that school is too standardized. We show up every single day at the same exact time and do the same thing for 6hr straight, 7 days a week. It gets boring after awhile. I think that if we mix things up like have different classes different days. I also feel that we start too early. If we start later I feel like students would be better rested, more awake and have more of a sense of what is going on. I believe that if we start later teachers would see better test scores, more active learning, and more alertness from the students. Personally, the first 2 periods are the worst. They drag on and honestly I could say I do not really pay attention in those 2 classes because I am so tired. If we push
