Wealth is another theme viewed in the novel,just like the American dream, wealth is a very important aspect in the novel, since they werelooking for success and power through money after the war. The characters were classified in thenovel depending on their wealth, this ties directly with society and class, other of the themespresented in the novel, the classification they had in the novel depended on how they made theirfortune grow. There were three types of character classification presented in the novel “oldmoney”, “new money”, and “no money”(Florman and Kestler). These families had powerful and influentialsocial connections (Florman and Kestler). “The Carraways are something of a clan and we havea tradition that we’re descended from the Dukes of Buccleuch…” (Fitzgerald 3).Next, the “newmoney” characters come into play. Gatsby was the main “new money” character in the novel;these characters started their wealth following the American dream in the 1920s boom having nosocial connections. They show displays of wealth to counterbalance their lack of socialinfluences (Florman and Kestler).”Gatsby had dismissed every servant in his house a week agoand replaced them with half a dozen others” (Fitzgerald 114). Last the “no money” characterslike George Wilson, are ignored by the upper classes (Florman and Kestler) since they hadnothing to offer and zero social influences. Love and betrayal are the other two themes discussedin the novel. These two themes tie together since the characters love, yet cheat and betray eachother constantly.
