New World
The New World was a chance for a better life for the Europeans. They viewed the New World as being able to start over and start fresh. “Once the “Discovery” of this New World had taken place, they invented an America of the imagination, projecting onto it their hopes for a better life”(Foner, 2). The Europeans needed an escape route and the New World provided just that. Their reasoning for wanting the New World was for wealth, freedom and religious freedom of their homeland. Due to the many obstacles being thrown at the Europeans during this time, which included strict and unequal social orders and churches. The European nations were also battling with constant warfare amongst the many other challenges being faced. Why wouldn’t they want the New World based off of these conditions?
Once the Europeans arrived they sought to take over land. However, much of the land was “owned” by Native Americans. The Native Americans lacked the power to fight for their land. The Native Americans were not as advanced as the European; this allowed the Europeans to easily conquer. The things that were important to the Europeans were not of importance to the Native Americans. Despite the Indians having no desire to be wealthy or live as

They were set on trying to convert the Native Americans to Christianity. Unfortunately, most of the Native Americans were not willing to convert and very faithful to their own religion and beliefs. Due to the fact that they were unwilling to convert the Spanish killed a lot of the Native Americans. The Spanish only viewed them as ‘heathens’ and they were incapable of contributing. The French were not as harsh as the Spanish; instead they wanted to help the Native Americans. They helped make them stronger by increasing their status. The French used the Native Americans to establish other trade options. For this reason, the British and the French came to
They were cruel to Native Americans. Based on the document, it states “They(the Spanish)forced the Natives to learn Spanish and took over much of the Natives land to build Mexico City.” The Spanish conquered the Natives and disrespected them. They killed a lot of Native Americans and forced some Native Americans out for people coming from Spain to live in New Spain. According to the document it states” In New Spain Native Americans as well as Africans were enslaved and forced to work to build up the Spanish empire.” The Spanish enslaved Native Americans. The Spanish were cruel to the Native Americans. Therefore, there is big difference between how the Spanish treated Native Americans and how the French treated the Native
After observing local natives, the first Spanish conquistadors came to the conclusion that the Native Americans were barbaric and in dire need of Christian teachings. Thus, Spanish colonists made it their mission to convert the local natives to Christianity, using violence when there was resistance. In 1597, there were a series of uprisings by the Guale Indians in present-day Florida. They destroyed many missions, explaining that the Spanish missionaries had attempted to eliminate their religious practices such as feasts and celebrations. The Spanish also oppressed the Native Americans, and used them as a labor force under the encomienda system. The French, on the other hand, are known for their peaceful alliances with the Native Americans. Colonists established trade agreements with the local natives, obtaining raw goods such as fur and timber. Their peaceful relationship may in fact be attributed to the Spanish; the “Black Legend” of Spanish cruelty towards Native Americans made other European countries eager to prove themselves different. The French took pride in the fact that they treated the Native Americans more humanely than their Spanish counterparts. In addition, the French were not interested in expanding their territory, unlike the Spanish. They were simply looking for trade opportunities, and a mutual relationship with the Native Americans was advantageous. The primary goal of Spain
The Native Americans sustained and took care of their home, while the Europeans pushed and pulled for more money to fall from it. This caused the land to lose a lot of its density and eventually the Europeans’ wealth as well. Things that were lost were proper farming grounds, culture of the Native Americans, and wild life. Different views of the Europeans and Native Americans caused a lot of conflict. The Europeans’ views on the Indians’ way of life became critical once they saw and felt as if their society was not controlled
Before Europeans ever ventured to North America, the land had been populated by Native American nations that had their own distinct cultures and social structures. Native Americans had trade routes and established complex relationships between tribes. They were not merely heathens waiting to be civilized by the Europeans. Yet, Europeans would use those justifications to lay claim on their land.
In the essay “The Meaning of Property,” C.B. Macpherson states the argument for how property is “a concept of rights (15),” not a thing that can be claimed. The Native Americans loosely used this idea of property in their lives. Their land was a recognized right by the surrounding communities and ownership rights within a territory usually meant what one had made with their own hands. The European colonists had the notion that “Indians seemed to live like paupers in a landscape of great natural wealth (Cronon 50).” Since the Indians utilize many resources from the land, and not totally dependent on farming, Colonists used this to justify taking the their land. Europeans observed how the Indians did not make a permanent, exclusive mark on the land as a “token not of their chosen way of life but of their laziness (Cronon 50).” John Winthrop claimed that the Indians didn’t actually own any land since they failed to inclose any land,“fences and livestock were thus pivotal elements in the English rationale for taking Indian lands (Cronon Fields 66).” The European way of thinking also saw property as a means of wealth, power, and social status. European treatment of nature can be reflected upon their culture. The culture they came from focused on capitalism, so they saw the new lands as a means of profit. Native American culture differed since they collected from the land what they needed. They had respect for the land and even realized the danger of over fishing salmon in the rivers. The Indians would make sure to only catch enough fish to feed themselves and then stopped fishing to let the fish go back upstream to reproduce. European culture on the other hand, depleted the natural resources they found, which could be seen through the depleted beaver population due to the high demand and profitable fur
While it took some time for the Europeans to get settled, they were able to conquer to Indians quickly afterwards. The Indians started to loose their land and they became “regarded entirely within English colonial jurisdiction; indeed, the logic of the situation seemed to indicate that, for Indians to own land at all, it had first to be granted them by the English Crown” (Cronon 70). The English also had the upper hand, in their own eyes, because they had money. As John Locke thought, “because the Indians lacked the incentives of money and commerce, Locke thought, they failed to improve their land and so remained a people devoid of wealth and comfort” (Cronon 79). They also had the upper hand because they had antibodies to all of the diseases that they brought. The Europeans also had a different relationship with animals; “The English sought a much more total and year-round control over their animals’ lives” (Cronon 128). They domesticated their animals and owned them, whereas the Indians did not. When Europeans first came to New England, they started to change the ecology of
The Native American people were indigenous to America. They were having a good life and living in peace until some people came and decided to claim the land as theirs. The Native Americans did not have all of the resources that the Europeans had. They had simple bow and arrows, knives, and etc. Nothing that was advanced or modern. The Europeans had all of the advanced technology
To Natives, the property was mobile, distribution, and communal resources. So, the thought of what property was caused Euro-Americans to believe Native Americans didn’t know what property was, but the Euro-Americans did. The property was something on the line to the Natives as the Euro-Americans didn’t view property as mobile or a communal resource, and the Native Americans saw that the colonies would soon expand towards the west, they did. The Native Americans became dependent on the English as well. Native Americans received tools like European firearms that would be used to fight off rival tribes, and Natives used these firearms on the Americans during the war. As Americans fighting with the English intensified, so did the fighting with
If anyone deserved to share the New World with the Native Americans it would be the French. The English, the Spanish and the Dutch all mistreated the natives, but the French showed true respect for them. The beginning of the French’s attempts to settle in the New World were rocky and took time to create a great relationship with the Native Americans. What created such a strong relationship between the French and the Native Americans was the interest to trade. The relationship was so strong that it led to trading, inter-relationships between the French and Indians and even led to them being allies in many wars.
Which further increased their dislike of them. The second country discussed is France. The French came to America to as well acquire more land, grow their fur trade, and suggest not enforce the Native People to convert religions. The French contrary to the English valued the Native Americans and tended to be the group in which they allied with the most; because of their respect of the Native American Culture as well ownership on the Natives lands. In the early years the English,
There are many reasons why we should or shouldn’t colonize in the New World. But, in my opinion we should colonize in the New World so we can conquer land and become a powerful nation. Another reason we should colonize in the New World is so then we can get gold and other materials which are worth a lot that you can’t get in Spain. For example, when Columbus sent us a letter it also talked about how the Native American’s are inclined to follow us and become Christians and how they will exchange valuable items for trifles. One reason we should colonize in the New World is so we can conquer land and become a powerful nation.
1. What conditions existed in what is today the United States that made it "fertile ground" for a great nation?
The French just tried to stay out of the way of Indians, but they also did try to take some land from Native Americans. The Dutch respected the Indians, also. They weren't in North America to conquer, rather they were they to get resources worth something
The Europeans believed the Indians were lazy, non-deserving savages who were on land that was “given” to the Europeans by God. They thought that God had taken them to the new land because they were running out of resources in Europe. The Europeans saw the Natives as a resource along with everything they had on the new land. “I understood sufficiently from other Indians, whom I had already taken that this land was nothing but an island”
European vs. Native concepts of land ownership: Europeans believed that land was a resource to be exploited for human use. They took granted of property lines, inheritance of land, and courts to settle resulting land disputes. Property meant independent, wealth, status, political rights, and identity to the Europeans. The Natives believed that land held sacred qualities and should be held in common. Whatever the Earth provided like food and water should be shared among everyone.
