This happened to Melena Thropp in the book The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, written by Gregory McGuire. The Broadway musical “Wicked,” by Winnie Holzman, was based on this novel. When it made its debut it astounded the world as it won many awards. “Wicked” draws in many people because they can relate to the feeling of being ostracized the way Elphaba was. In the 21st century, musicals have progressed along with technology due to the use of new special effects in musicals today.

Glinda has nurturing qualities and pushes them on Dorothy as well. The Wicked Witch of the West is the exact opposite of being unattractive and unwelcoming to Dorothy. This poses two type of women in the 30s and 40s: one that appeases men and stays in the home, and one that goes against the formalities of what defines a woman, resulting in hatred towards her. Dorothy chooses the type of women she wants to be minute she gets to the land of Oz by crushing the other Wicked Witch.

She’s the villain because she opposes anything that Glinda, Dorothy and her friends do. She desperately wants her sister’s slippers back that Dorothy wears during the movie and will do anything to try and get them. The wicked witch of the west said, “I’ll get you my pretty and your little dog too!” This shows that the witch is the villain because she told Dorothy that she’s going after her and will get her slippers at some point in the movie. The witch follows Dorothy and her friends throughout their journey down the yellow brick road, she taunts them their whole way to see the wizard.

In the movie, The Wizard of Oz, when Glinda said “She had to learn it for herself,” the it was that there is no place like home, she loves her family and they love her back, and she is satisfied on the farm. First of all, part of the “it” Glinda was talking about is that there is no place like home. The movie script states, “And I'm not going to leave here ever, ever again, because I love you all! And- Oh, Auntie Em- there's no place like home!” This is one part of “it”. Dorothy has learned that Kansas is her home and that she loves her family. Dorothy says “there’s no place like home,” and that was part of the “it” that she had to learn in order to go home. She needed to know there was no place like home before she could really go home.

She is met with conflict and peril as she travels through the land of Oz to finally meet the Wizard in the Emerald City.
