Most wigwams were curved to hold up against harsh weather. Young tree saplings were cut about 10 to 15 feet long and bent by stretching the wood to make an arch. A circle was then drawn on the ground (between 10 to 16 ft in diameter) and the bent saplings were placed over the circle. The tallest sapling is in the middle and the shorter ones were on the outside. After all the saplings are made into arches around the circle, the next set of saplings was used to wrap around the wigwam to make it strong and give it shape. The roof and sides are placed on after all the saplings are tied together. Using bark strips, the wigwam is covered and should repel most bad weather. The longhouses were permanent.
