Leaders: Made or Born? Is a good leader made or born? Some people are born into having to be a good leader. Others are naturally great leaders. The real question here though is, was Ralph from William Golding’s novel Lord of The Flies born to be a leader? Or was he made to be? The novel by William Golding Lord of The Flies is a book about a group of boys stranded on an island from having their plane shot down by an enemy plane during WWII. Ralph from The Lord of The Flies is a good leader because of his appearance, actions, and thoughts. A trait to show that Ralph is a good leader is his appearance. An example of him being the “good kid” in this book is his hair. On Page 7 of William Golding’s novel Lord of The Flies, it says “The boy with
German journalist John Zenger once stated, “Great leaders are not defined by the absence of weakness, but rather by the presence of clear strengths”. When one is forced into a situation where a leader is necessary, a person that displays the fundamental attributes will successfully guide the society. Throughout the novel Lord of the Flies, the boys on the island represent various aspects of leadership, characterized by differing strengths. However, the protagonist’s, Ralph, leadership undoubtedly triumph over the other boys because his attributes allow him to be a powerful leader on the island. Throughout William Golding’s novel, he clearly depicts Ralph as an effective leader through his desire for the survival of all of the boys, his adamant
In William Golding’s Lord of The Flies, the detriments of an unrefined civilization, such as one without leadership and indulgent citizens who are amoral, can be catastrophic, causing extreme repercussions to society. A lack of solid leadership, such as the arbitrary leader Ralph, can cause confusion, apprehension, and chaos. Jack and other children often indulge their impulses which clouds their judgement causing them to undermine their society. By not reinforcing the difference between savagery and humanity, many people begin to die. Ralph clearly is not well-equipped to lead a group of young men.
“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.” Abraham Lincoln. Once you give a man power, it all goes downhill from there. In The Lord of the Flies by William Golding, there is one group of boys on an island. The boys elect one chief, Ralph, but another bigun thinks he’s a better chief. So the other boy, Jack, leaves and forms a new tribe with most of the boys. After a little bit of time, the groups begin to fight resulting in a couple of tragic deaths. Why would people follow a corrupt leader like Jack? They follow them because they feel like the new leader can help them better than the old one; they think that the leader or ruler can provide for them and it doesn’t matter who that leader is, they will follow them because there’s no one else to follow.

Have you ever met someone who is a natural leader? In the Lord of the Flies by William Golding, British boys are sent to an island to keep them safe from a war. The boys are without any adults and must use what’s around them and what they know to survive. Ralph (one of the older boys) is a leader and tried his best to maintain peace and help the group survive. I believe Ralph doesn’t have a distinct character flaw.
Over time there have been many leaders of countries, groups and societies that are believed to be the “best” or what someone could only dream of. However what if a perfect leader doesn’t exist? In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies Ralph’s sense of leadership declines throughout the novel. So what if he doesn’t actually possess the skills the boys had hoped he for.
In society, there are often people who acquire strong leadership qualities and understand what it means to be a favorable leader. Other times, there are people who have strong qualities to lead, but they do not understand how to be a favorable leader and create a safe and comfortable environment for those following them. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the characters of Ralph and Jack arise as two different leaders who bear strong characteristics and they both seek power on the island. The boys become leaders in their own ways, creating individual environments that prioritize different matters, all while trying to work towards their rescue off the island.
Humans are a sophisticated and advanced race, one which possess the ability to affect their environment, and one another, in significant and often destructive ways. War is a catastrophic event created by humans, who upon creating it neglect to comprehend its far-reaching effects. The novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, places a group of prepubescent males into one of these situations. After an evacuation aircraft crash-lands, the boys are left upon a deserted island to manage and fend for themselves. As Golding details the trials and tribulations of the young men on the island, it becomes increasingly apparent that the children respect authority and require an organized leadership. The failure to manifest such a system will result in a de-evolution into savagery.
Although Ralph shows good leadership skills, he also has weaknesses like everyone else. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph portrays the Hero, Scapegoat, and Innocent Youth Archetypes. Ralph demonstrates the Hero Archetype when he becomes chief, when he helps build shelters to sleep in, when he stood up to Jack, when he went to look for the beast, and lastly when he tried to help Piggy get his specs back. Ralph also demonstrates the Scapegoat Archetype when he was attacked, when he was hiding from the savages, when he was seen by a savage and got frightened, and when he realized he lost his innocence. Ralph’s innocent youth is also shown when Ralph squirted water at Piggy, when he imagined the group being rescued, and when he asked a question he already knew the answer to.
One of the main leaders in Lord of the Flies is Ralph. Since the start of the story Ralph had shown some great leadership qualities. He was able to keep a level head and win support in a small vote to be leader. He proves to be very supportive and caring in many times in the story. “And I work all day with nothing but Simon and you come back and don't even notice the huts” (Golding 54). Proving that he can make the sacrifice of working all day to provide a needed structure to survive on the island. The huts him and Simon build brought much needed calm to the little kids stranded on the island with them. Ralph also shows his ability to think for the best of the group and listen to his group members. An example of this would be when Piggy suggested to move the signal fire to the beach, due to how far the top of the mountain was. With many of the kids that were scared to climb up the mountain he was reasonably able to decide to move the fire to the beach.
Throughout William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, Ralph, the fair leader, responds to his unique setting in many ways. At first, Ralph is ecstatic to be on the island and to have freedom from society’s rules, adult oversight, and authority. However, he soon finds that an irrational fear of a beast threatens to cause chaos amongst the boys. When all rules are forgotten and savagery reigns without authority, he takes it upon himself to enforce the island’s laws in an effort to maintain order and morality. In the end of the novel, Ralph starts to lose the specific character traits that define him as a productive leader as the boys around him turn savage and civilization fades from their society. As the novel progresses, Ralph takes a turn for the worse as he forgets his core principles and is tempted by savagery.
In the famous novel named “Lord of the flies”, there are four main characters that William Golding built up to represent the typical personalities in human nature. While Jack stands for the powerfully instinct savagery, Simon represents the natural kindness and Piggy with his glasses is the symbol of wisdom, Ralph has the best conducts of a real leader as he was initially voted for chief. There are three main characteristics that mark him out as a felicitous leader: rational, moral and unflinching.
“‘The rules!’ shouted Ralph. ‘You’re breaking the rules!’ ‘Who cares?’ Ralph summoned his wits: ‘Because the rules are the only thing we’ve got!’” (91). In Lord of the Flies, Ralph says this to Jack at one of their assemblies, after having berated the boys for neglecting the shelter building and the signal fires. Ralph’s leadership is built on these rules, and Jack’s breaking of them causes an ideological conflict between them which eventually leads to Ralph’s loss of power among the group. He tries to create a just and orderly society to fulfill their needs and allow them to be rescued, but the boys eventually find Jack’s churlish lethargy and excess to be more desirable. Desirable, as defined by the Oxford English Dictionary, can be
William golding the author of the book Lord of the flies introduced us to the character Ralph who is apart of the jock clique. In the book ralph is known as muscular and well kept this is shown when golding states, “You could see now that he might make a boxer, as far as width and heaviness of his shoulders went.”(golding 11) This means he seems to be very well kept and more muscular than most boys his age. In the book golding shows that ralph is a good leader for the kids on the island this is stated by the quote, “ We can use the conch to call the others”(golding 16). This means that he knows what he is doing first thing. There is another quote that shows he is a good leader and it states, “yet most powerful there was the conch” (golding
Government is a well structured system that consists of a leader who takes into consideration the philosophies of their advisor to keep chaos at ease and allow equality and freedom for citizens. Throughout history, many great philosophers have stood up and expressed their thoughts and beliefs of an effective government. Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, believed that a strong government requires a strong leader who governs with sagacity and knowledge and the strong leader would be advised by intelligent philosophers. William Golding the author of Lord of The Flies acknowledges Aristotle’s idea and reverses the situation to express the defects of not listening to one's leader. In this book, the ruler, Ralph is guided by Piggy, whose abnormal characteristics cause the other boys to tease him. However, due to the tension between Ralph and Piggy and the failure to take into consideration of the idea sought by Aristotle, this systematic form of government falls into a tragedy. In the Lord Of The Flies by William Golding, the boys on the island fail to effectively govern themselves due to the leader’s failure to listen to his advisor. According to Aristotle, the ignorance Ralph gave towards Piggy caused Anarchy and destruction to fall into island.
