Winter Dreams and The Garden Party I have chosen two short stories the first one being F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Winter Dreams and the second one being Katherine Mansfield’s The Garden Party. “Winter Dreams” was written in and published in 1922, and so was “The Garden Party”. “Winter Dreams” takes place during the winter months and we find the main character Dexter Green skiing on the golf course that he is a caddie for during the golf season. During the offseason, Dexter’s imagination becomes more and more powerful. He thinks of himself as one of the best golfers and he imagines himself beating some of the more esteemed members of the golf course. When the spring comes, Dexter runs into a lady by the name of Judy Jones. Judy asks …show more content…
As the story goes, the book travels back in time to when Dex was twenty-three and when he was granted a weekend pass back to his old stomping grounds by one of the prominent figures he used to caddy for. There he runs into Judy and then while waiting to go on a date, he realizes just how much of a difference there is between their social classes. Dexter realizes he will never be able to marry her and eventually becomes engaged, but that falls apart, and by age thirty-two Dexter becomes more successful than ever before. A business associate of his notifies him that his love Judy has since married and was in a disaster of a relationship. The Garden Party takes place in early in the 20th century at the estate of a wealthy family in New Zealand. It was interesting story in the way that it portrayed the upper class in a not so fashionable way. In the story, Laura’s family is throwing a huge garden party. However, next door there is a family who is not so well off and they just lost the family patriarch in a tragic carriage accident, and yet her family insists on having the party delayed to pay respects to the next door neighbors. However, her self-centered family members refuse to, saying there is no need to cancel their party. Her sister goes on to even say when referring to the man who died, “You won’t bring a drunk workman back to life by being sentimental.”(Mansfield, 123) That just
In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story, “Winter Dreams,” ambitious, “desirous” Dexter stands at the threshold between admiring “glittering things” and finding out that the “glittering things” he admires fade away sooner or later. Dexter‘s character throughout this short story, changes in many ways, from being unaware of what he really wanted in life to being aware of what he actually became.
“Winter Dreams” was published in 1926 by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald was well known for his novel “The Great Gatsby”. Both “Winter Dreams” and “Great Gatsby” both have a common theme. The failure of the American dream, and the poor boy falling in love with a rich girl. Most of his writings depict the jazz age and what they are. “Winter Dreams” was about a young boy dreaming of this perfect life. But in the end his dream turns sour and ‘his life falls apart knowing that his dream has fallen apart. F. Scott Fitzgerald demonstrates characterization throughout the whole short story. The setting is very significant in this story because it paints the backstory, and helps visualize what's happening during the story. The author also uses the theme to convey the lesson of “Winter Dreams”. F. Scott Fitzgerald in “The Winter Dream” depicts the fallacy of the American dream because no
The two housewives have a passionate love for gardening and bestow their love and appreciation towards their gardens. In the twentieth century, gardening was advocated as beneficial to one’s life and family. In the New England Quarterly, the journal, “Gardening as ‘Women’s Culture’ in Mary E. Wilkins Freeman’s Short Fiction,” states,“The time women spent in
The garden is the vehicle in which the narrator reveals her reluctance to leave behind the imaginary world of childhood and see the realities of the adult world. The evidence supporting this interpretation is the imagery of hiding. The narrator uses the garden to hide from reality and the
Fitzgerald “Winter Dreams” The entire tone of ‘Winter Dreams’ was nostalgic and wistful. His past memories permeated throughout the story. Dexter tried very hard to forget his humble beginnings. He was on a mission to disregard the recollections of his immigrant mother, and grocer father.
The short story I read was “A Christmas Memory” by Truman Capote. The book was mainly about two characters, Buddy and his friend, and a memorable Christmas that they spent together a couple of years back before Buddy’s friend passed away. Basically the whole story is a memoir, his own memories and experiences , because Buddy is reminiscing on the past and is speaking upon the memories that he remembers from that Christmas spent with his friend. Even though it was a short story, Capote did a well enough job of describing not only the characters, but also their relationship with literary devices such as figurative language, symbolism, theme, and many more.
Short stories have fully developed themes but appear significantly shorter and less elaborate than novels. A similar theme found in short stories “Winter Dreams” written by Scott F. Fitzgerald and “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner included the social and environmental influences that encouraged and controlled the character’s life and decisions. In “Winter Dreams”, the main protagonist-- Dexter-- fell into a fixation over a young, whimsical blueblood, Judy Jones. His obsession led him to believe that Judy Jones reciprocated his feelings for her, leaving him bare and mortal-- despite prior beliefs. Following her father’s death, Miss Emily fell into a dark obscurity due to the pressure and compulsion of having to carry on the honorable family name. While using a unique point of view (first person peripheral), “A Rose for Emily” followed a mysterious and desirable woman named Miss Emily as her hometown tried to understand her peculiar ways and began to find her disgraceful. By comparing and contrasting these two literary pieces, a similar organization-- including the writers’ purpose and themes-- should become clear. By using literary devices-- such as point of view, dramatic irony, detail, and figurative language-- Scott F. Fitzgerald and William Faulkner conducted two short stories similar in aim and reasoning, probable for contrasting and comparing elements within the parallel writings.
F. Scott Fitzgerald was an american author with several breathtaking novels and short stories. Among his most well known pieces of literature is The Great Gatsby which is a about a rich man who is in love with a married woman. “Winter Dreams” is also another piece of literature that Fitzgerald wrote. “Winter Dreams” is about a man's dream of becoming wealthy and dream of marrying the woman he loves. These two pieces of literature are very similar in various aspects that are noticeable as the reader compares the two. The constant mention of the desire of love and the desire for luxury demonstrates that these two things are not always the key to a happy life.
"Winter Dreams" follows the lives of two very ordinary people, Dexter Green and Judy Jones, by using characterization. Dexter is a very dynamic character for the better, meaning he learns the hard way but still makes it out somewhat on top. " 'Winter Dreams' chronicles the rise of Dexter Green, a hardworking, confident young man who becomes caught up in the pursuit of wealth and status"("Winter
The short story “Winter Dreams” was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and was first seen by anyone in December of 1922 when it appeared in Metropolitan Magazine. The story also illustrates many of the same themes as “The Great Gatsby,” the greatest novel in American history. “Winter Dreams” is about a young man named “Dexter” who has desires, but thinks the only way he can have them is if he is rich. His ambition gets the best of him when he strives for everything he cannot have. When unmasked to reality, your dreams can expire instantaneously.
Winter Dreams by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a short a short story about Dexter Green told from the third person point of view. Fitzgerald is a very recognisable figure in american literature. Fitzgerald success on his first novel allowed him to marry the love of his life Zelda. .Fitzgerald like to set his stories among the glamor of the upper class in America during the jazz age. He wrote his stories and novels during this time period and that is why they are set then.” F. Scott Fitzgerald eagerly embraced his newly minted celebrity status and embarked on an extravagant lifestyle that earned him a reputation as a playboy and hindered his reputation as a serious literary writer”(Biography.com) .He traces the path to success that people try
The philosopher Karl Marx once said, “It is not the consciousness of men that determines their being, but, on the contrary, their social being that determines their consciousness” (Marx). Marx argues that social circumstances determine one’s value and belief. Therefore, in his short story “Winter Dreams”, F. Scott Fitzgerald supports this Marxist theory by exposing that the proletariat is oppressed by the bourgeoisie’s ideology that the goal of life lies in status and material success, wrongly leading the middle-class to pursue inappropriate goals and ultimately to lose personal identity as developed through vivid imagery, starting with depicting a proletarian’s dream, followed by his success and transformation by a materialist, and ending
When this work was assigned, I immediately chose the winter song Jingle Bell Rock. In my opinion, this song sounds like a typical puertorican song. It is happier, with a lot of movement. I also like it because of all the poetic devices that the song has. I will be showing you some of these poetic devices this song has.
In ‘The Garden Party’, Katherine Mansfield presents the rich to show unawareness of the poor within their neighbourhood in order to contain their happiness. The main character, Laura starts off within a middle class bubble that she has been isolated within all her life. Through her upbringing she has been protected which has resulted in her unawareness of the ‘real’ world. Between them all, the Sheridan family are organising a party, when it takes a turn for the worse. Laura is faced with death. Laura is the only one concerned at this point by the death of Mr. Scott, a local working class man. However, her sister, Jose is not touched by this tragedy. The quote “Stop the garden-party? My dear Laura, don 't be so absurd” clearly presents the selfishness within her sister’s voice, who is also part of the middle class ‘bubble’ that she is not prepared to break for the sake of anyone, especially not
I’ve always loved the cold, whether it is for the snow and playing with friends or being able to sleep with multiple blankets without overheating. Something about being cold is very calming to me, which is why I keep my windows open when I go to bed. Winter time is also when apple cider comes back which is awesome. I also feel like cold weather is nice for just relaxing, I’d find a vent somewhere in my house and put a blanket over it and me, eventually it would create a kind-of air bubble, and outside of it would be my hands and arms because I can’t stand them getting warm it’s extremely uncomfortable to me. This would also allow me to pick things up without having to take my arms out of the air bubble. Reading used to be one of my favorite things to do, and winter would be my favorite time to read them because of what I could do with the vents. Nowadays I hardly read anymore, and if I do It’s either something I’ve already read or a sequel to books I’ve already read. The last book I’ve read without it having to do with school was called escape from furnace in 6th grade, I liked the series a lot and ended up buying every book in the series, in 8th grade I also read bone but it’s more of a comic. Anyway, every winter vacation I would be so excited because, at the time, I was reading the magic tree house a lot and since there were 54 books, I wanted to pace the amount I’d read so I wouldn’t run out, every winter vacation I would read a book a day and then stop at the end of the week. This lasted me years until the end of the series which was inevitable but at the same time sad, realizing I had finally exhausted my favorite tradition. Our Grandma was the one who took care of us because my parents both were working. Sometimes she would leave me by myself and take my sister to the store to buy jewelry and clothes and such. When they left, I would get my blanket and set up the air bubble in front of a window that overlooked the frozen lake outside our house. Then I would build a small but sturdy fort and open the door to the outside, letting the cool breeze in while the vent warmed my toes. At the time, where there was once a deck, was just empty space because my dad decided to remodel most of our house and there was
