According to the materiel Of The People, the American Revolution was based upon beliefs in human equality and a common human nature which brought into question all social relations including those of women and slaves. Many women were drawn into the revolution as consumers. Women argued that the right to be taxed only by one’s own representatives should apply to them as well being that they were both consumers and home producers. Although most revolutionaries (with the exception of New Jersey) were not prepared to let women vote they did broaden their views of a women's intellectual and political capabilities.
