Theme Essay for Wonder Don't judge a book by its cover its a life lesson we all learn. Don't judge someone by the way they look or the clothes they wear. In the story, Wonder by R.J Palacio takes this theme a lot deeper. The author takes the reader on an adventure with a young boy named August or Auggie. Auggie has facial deformities and has had many surgeries in his life. He is starting school for the very first time. At his new school, all the kids look at him like he is a monster. Except for one her name is Summer. Auggie met her at lunch on his first day she was the only person that saw him as just another human. The theme of this novel is don't judge a book by its cover.

Before that, he was homeschooled by his mom so he is not used to all the work and waking up super early. Eventually, Auggie meets some friends who like him for who he is their names are Summer and Jack Will. They both see Auggie as a normal person for example when the author writes “She put her lunch tray on the table, plopped her backpack on the floor, and sat down across from me. She started to eat the mac and cheese on her plate.’ "Ugh," she said after the swallowing the first bite. "I should have brought a sandwich like you did"’(Palacio 43). This shows that Summer didn't even realize the way he looked and just started having a normal conversation with
Near the end of the book Auggie feels accepted. On page 282 we find evidence of this when he says, “It was like I was one of them.” When he says “them” he is referring to the other students. Auggie could finally feel “normal” and it is necessary for August to feel this way because people have always seen Auggie as strange because of his face. At a point August even forgets he has Treacher Collins syndrome. On page 307 we find an example of this, “I wasn’t even thinking about my face. I was just smiling a big happy smile.” August felt like it didn 't matter what his face looked like. It just mattered that he was happy. For once, Auggie didn 't feel like everyone was trying to get away from him; on the contrary, he said, “It kind of felt like everyone wanted to get close to me.” (pg 308) August can finally feel like a “normal” kid.
His facial difference was his main struggle in life. An example of Auggie demonstrating the May precept from Mr.Browne was when he chose not to report the 7th graders who were using firecrackers, bullied Auggie physically and verbally, and took his hearing aids (even though the teachers found out anyway). In the same situation, Auggie wanted to run away from the 7th grade bullies, but he stayed, because he didn’t want to leave Jack behind. More than enough times, Auggie always put up with Julian’s bullying and mean notes, and he never told a teacher. He was never rude when he noticed people staring at him excessively, or looking away when they saw him. Auggie was always very good at being good to everyone he
In the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio, Auggie shows insecurity by being antisocial, hiding his face, and blaming his looks on everything that goes wrong. When his sister Via had a school play, she didn’t invite Auggie because she thought he would be bored but Auggie thought his sister didn’t invite him because he was deformed. “You think I don’t know what’s going on? You just don’t want your fancy little friends to find out your brother is a freak” (Auggie 218). According to this quote, August is insecure because he didn’t get invited to sister’s play and blamed it on his appearance right away instead of considering other possibilities. Another example of August’s insecurity is when he almost missed what ended up being the best thing that ever happened in his life. He explained “Via, I don’t think I should go to the campout. What’s the point? I won’t make any friends because everyone will scream and run away from me. I know I would if I saw someone who looked like me” (Auggie 263). This quote shows how insecure he is because
The first and most important lesson for a grade school or middle school student to understand and appreciate is kindness. Kindness is a major theme in this book. Most of the characters give serious thought about how their actions will affect others. In this book it shows how much kindness matters. To quote the text people
At first not everyone is nice to Auggie but by the end almost everyone learns to accept Auggie for who he is. By going to school Auggie changed from a shy, and self-conscious boy to a confident, energetic young man. Up until 5th grade Auggie has been homeschooled by his mom instead of going to real school because of all of his surgeries so starting school is a big deal for him and he is a bit scared but by the end he
Imagine being made fun of every day in school. Imagine hiding your face in a mask. Imagine wanting a perfect face. This was sadly the life of August. August, a boy in the book Wonder by RJ Palacio, is not different from other boys.
The first section of the novel put carefully readers inside the brain of a kid with a facial disability describing what it looks like to survive the meetings that Auggie must face every day. Through Via his sister , carefully reads get the chance to see Auggie's reality from the point of view of somebody who has shared his life, knows him well, and loves and honors him in spite of his changes .Losing Grandparents hints that Via loses this basic source of approval, and this critical bad luck adds to the weakness Via feels as she starts secondary school. She can convince Auggie to go trap or-treating and to move backward to class after he catches destructive comments: when managing school facts or conditions (that surround someone), Auggie absolutely clearly values her judgment.

August teaches everyone how to look past physical differences and get to know
In the beginning of the story, we begin with the beginning signs of bullying from a student at Beecher Prep, the school that August, which at the time, is his future school, as he asks him what happened to his face, saying he looked like he was in a fire (quote missing). But as time goes on, August is affected by the surroundings he’s seen in addition to the bullying done by Julian, as he says, “‘Why do I have to be so ugly, Mommy?’” (Palacio 60) under tears. Things only get worse as when he comes into school on Halloween,
This book is very interesting and motivating. Auggie is himself poignant character. His story is moving and uplifting. Auggie is an ordinary kid from the inside. This book is inspiring and refreshing. This book will leave any reader feeling better. This book will also have some drama, friendship, and bullying.
His loving parents and sister have shielded him from many outside influences. For example, Auggie has been homeschooled up to fifth-grade. In the beginning of the novel, his mother has decided that it was time for Auggie to have a real school experience. Some of the students that Auggie encounters are accepting and kind, others are a bit put off by him, and still others are complete cruel. The novel follows Auggie’s first year of middle school from the beginning to end.
His eyes were one inch lower then they were supposed to be and he was born without a chin. He has had countless surgeries one of them being taking some of his hip bone and transferring it to where his chin should be. Over the years, because of his many surgeries, he has been homeschooled until it's time to go to middle school(5th grade). This story is told from his perspective as well as from his sister's, her boyfriend's and friends' perspectives. Which gives us an insight to what others think about auggie's situation as well as Auggie August and
Tushman, to take a tour of the campus. When Auggie arrives Mr. Tushman introduces himself and asks Auggie some questions. Then he says that he has brought in three good students to give August the tour. When the students walk into the room August can see the look of shock on their faces. The girl changes her face back to a friendly smile and introduces herself as Charlotte. Auggie thinks Charlotte seems nice. One of the boys smiles and tells Auggie is name is Jack-Will and says the other boy’s name is Julian. Julian doesn’t seem as friendly as the other two. He is the antagonist of the
During Halloween, Auggie states that his favorite holiday is Halloween, the reason he was so fond of Halloween, is because he can wear a mast and not show anyone his face abnormalities. During this incident Auggie was supposed to wear a Boba Fett costume (from Star Wars) but since they were running late, he decided to wear his bleeding scream costume he wore the previous year. When Auggie Auggie got to school he felt very happy that he can be like the other kids and when he stands in front of his homeroom class he hears a person dressed up as Darth Sidious and he realized that it was Julian making fun of him and he was talking to two mummies and then he hears one of them saying, “I’ve thought about this a lot, and I really think...If I looked
I like how the book went. It started out as someone who didn’t like going out much because of his face.Auggie always used to where an astronaut helmet to hide it. His only friends at the time were the kids on his road.
