World War II was one of the most monumental events in history and certainly one of the most significant events in the 20th century. The catalyst for drawing the United States fully into the war was the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The series of confrontational events that led up to Pearl Harbor and the events that followed up until the Japanese surrender in 1945, were waged on the political, economic, and military fronts, but one aspect of the war which is sometimes overlooked is the war waged on the social front. What makes the social aspect of war so significant is that it involves a dynamic within the human person. In time of war, there is killing, violence, and hate, all stirred up from within. In the beginning of the propaganda campaigns, a very prominent feature is the setting in some sort of very narrow negative space. This gives the viewers of the poster a feeling of being trapped, cornered, and in danger, this helps to make the situation of the war noticable and severe. The idea the poster conveys through this use of space is almost like that when cornered and being mugged. Which is what the government wants the public to start view the Japanese as, muggers, bandits, and thieves. The posters features sharp angles on both the faces of the Japanese and the way the piece is oriented as in the angles of perspective, suggesting villainy. The figures will commonly be lurking in the shadows in some way. A woman is present in many of these posters. A nude woman is thrown sinisterly over his shoulder, carrying her like a goblin would carry a sack of gold from a dungeon. Her posture is almost pornographic and helpless, appears the victim of the rape and pillage seen in the background. Here, another woman is seen screaming a a japanese soldier encroaches upon her with a dagger or knife. The race of the woman grabs the attention of the audience even more. She is white, most likely American. At this time many states still haven’t legalized interracial marriage, and due to the culture of objectifying women which was very strong in America at this time, these posters almost in a way
