FUNKY SUNGLASSES—the accessory that’s always been practical and fashionable
The earliest historical reference to sunglasses dates back to ancient China and Rome. The Roman emperor Nero watched gladiator fights through polished gems. In China, sunglasses were used in the 12th century or possibly earlier. These sunglasses were made out of lenses that were flat panes of smoky quartz. They offered no corrective powers nor did they protect from harmful UV rays, but did protect the eyes from glare.
In prehistoric and historic time, members of various Eskimoan peoples wore flattened walrus ivory "glasses," looking through narrow slits to block harmful reflected rays of the sun.
Modern civilization began experimenting with tinted lenses in spectacles around 1752. There was belief that blue or green tinted glass could potentially correct specific vision impairments. Protection from the sun's rays was not a concern at this time. Glasses tinted with yellow-amber and brown were also a commonly prescribed item for people with syphilis in the 19th and early 20th century because one of the symptoms of the disease was sensitivity to light.
In the early 1900s sunglasses became more widespread, especially among movie stars. Famous actresses used shades to avoid recognition by fans and paparazzi, but also because they often had red eyes from the

Sam Foster introduced inexpensive mass-produced sunglasses in 1929, finding ready consumers on the beaches of Atlantic City, N.J. Polarized sunglasses hit the market in 1936 after Edwin H. Land experimented with making lenses using his patented Polaroid filter. In 1938, Life magazine called sunglasses a "New fad for wear on city streets...a favorite affectation of thousands of women all over the U.S.” It stated that 20 million sunglasses were sold in the United States in 1937, but estimated that only about 25% of American wearers needed them to protect their
Besides hairstyles, makeup was an enormous influence towards Australia's fashion. During the 1960s, makeup changed drastically. Eyes became the main feature of the face and false eyelashes and mascara became popular to use. Eye shadow was also worn mainly in blue, green, and brown and eyeliner was worn in thick and dark colours for a dramatic effect. Lips usually included pale shades of lipstick with glitter. All of these were popular amongst young female adolescents especially after seeing models like Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton using

Convenience: When the weather is nice, people will engage in a variety of activities. There may come a time or two that wearing glasses just becomes an inconvenience because they fall off of your face, need to be cleansed or just aren't fitting properly. Contact lenses are convenient because you don't have to bother with them once they are in. You can go about your day and enjoy whatever activity without having to adjust, clean or wipe them.
Golding uses the glasses as a symbol of common sense and rationality. Both of these qualities are possessed by a civilized human being. Golding shows the glasses as a symbol of power and introduces this when the boys say “His specs, use them as burning glasses” (159). This shows that initially the glasses were used as a piece of tech and symbolic of technological advancement made by man. The glasses also started a fire which was used as a signal to catch the attention of a plane or ship. Throughout the novel, the glasses get soiled by dirt. When Piggy speaks in front of the assembly he finds himself taking off his glasses and wiping them, “Piggy took off his glasses and blinked at the assembly while he wiped them on his shirt.” (38). In this quote, an analysis that can is that as Piggy’s glasses were getting worn out and his vision was less clear the boys also start getting blinded by reason, common sense, and cruelty. Furthermore, it shows that the more rules are broken the dirtier the glasses get. As it is known, the glasses are a sign of power and as the urge to rule spread on the island it became a fight for power. This fight of power lead to jack stealing and breaking Piggy’s glasses, “From his left dangled Piggy’s broken glasses” (131). The glasses had become the most important item on the island and this emphasizes to the reader that society can be destroyed by cruelty if rules

In the Wizard of Oz, the residents of the famed city are legally required to wear emerald glasses, which make the city appear green and sparkling. In the book, the wizard says, “My people have been wearing green glasses on their eyes for so long that most of them think this really is an Emerald City.” (Flank L. Baum). The glasses supposedly protect them from the glory that is Oz; however, the city no greener than any other city one may find.

Pieces of plastic are currently sitting right on the surfaces of the corneas in my eyes. These “pieces of plastic” are contact lenses, which I wear all day every day. Contact lenses are built of different types of flexible plastics, and the interesting thing about these plastics is that they allow for oxygen to pass through them. It is necessary for oxygen to pass through them because the cornea of your eye requires an oxygen flow. Contact lenses stick to your eye like a suction cup, they stay where you want them and can only be pulled off. The great invention of contact lenses permitted individuals with better sight and another option other than glasses, but how did contact lenses become such a great invention?
Like clothing, the 1920‘s also took a great tole on women’s accessorization, the use of cosmetics, and tanning. Some popular accessories girls wore were long strand of pearls, bangles, dangling earrings and furs. The strands of pearls were normally looped a few time around the neck. Long straight fur coats without curves became very popular (Women’s Fashion Accessories). Women began getting their eyebrows thinned to emphasize a younger face. They started wearing make up around the eyes to make them look larger. Lipstick became popular to accent the upper lip and depth of the lower lip. Because women wanted to change their look with makeup, the makeup market started booming during this decade. Although you could buy makeup, few women still made their own makeup. They used soot for eyeshadow and petroleum jelly mixed with soot for mascara. Women began to wear heels, the most popular being the ankle-strap cuban heeled shoe. They wore brimmed hats, such as a cloche hat to finish their look. Later in decade, more headbands with feather were being worn instead of brimmed hats. This look coming from the

One of the most used materials in human history is glass or more specifically silicate glass. Although some types of glasses are called crystal glass, glass is actually an amorphous solid and does not have a crystal structure. It is used in all walks of life ranging from homes to automobiles to laboratories. Historically, the one of the first types of glass that was used by humans to make tools and weapons was the volcanic glass known as obsidian. As for manmade glass, the earliest accounts date back to 5000 BC in the middle east. Primitive methods of glass making were used until about 100BC, when glassblowing was believed to be discovered. This discovery made glass products popular in the Roman Empire since the development of glassblowing allowed glass production to be more efficient and thus less expensive. As the centuries went on more techniques were developed which eventually lead to glass products being widespread. This paper will discuss some of the methods of glass production throughout history, the types of silicate glass, and the different ways that glass can be colored.
