The war lasted four years. During 1914, Franz was assassinated. Next, during 1914-1915 WWI had begun and the First Battle of Marne. After that, during 1915-1916, the 1st use of poison gas was used by Germany. Then in 1916-1917, the Battle of Verdun and the Battle of Jutland occurred. In 1917-1918, the Russian Revolution and VS declared war. Finally in 1918-1919, Russia leaves war, Allies advance, and Germany signs armistice. Throughout all the war over 25 countries eventually participated.
The war ended because the Germans signed the armistice agreement with the Allies. By the end of the war 9 million soldiers had died and 21 million had been injured. The war ended in November of 1918. The Allied powers were victorious and the Central powers were defeated. The Central Power and Germany started collapsing and crumbling from within. Finally, a German Republic was declared.
