I used to believe a leader was the person who was in the front of the room or the crowd, the one in the news, on the billboard and the one who is the most popular. A leader to me had to be the person with the most authority that was above everybody else like a teacher to a classroom or a chief is to cops. Being put into leadership positions taught me how wrong I had been. A leader can’t get nervous? I was nervous. A leader is always prepared and won’t wing anything. I have learned with my mistakes how important preparation is for social force. A leader is an authoritative role? Nope. Not at all. I don’t believe I’m any better than any of my peers or club member so I don’t see a reason to behave as though I am. Being a leader is being innovative, futuristic, individualistic, open and humble. Through these acquired taste, I have …show more content…
Although I plan to attend Xavier University of Louisiana which is away from Tulsa, I do believe my advice to my future club members and future program volunteers will help to keep me included in the programs development. When I reach university, I plan on keeping up the level of community involvement that I have currently now as a student mentor and leader. I have previously gone down to New Orleans on mission trips and made memories and connections with the community that provided me a yearning to explore and make an impact wherever I go and inspire those who will follow for years to come. Through being a student to my mentors and learning to be a mentor from other students I have seen a growth in not only my involvement in the community but me as a person which has resulted in better relationships and innovative actions. Through diligent community involvement and lessons in self I have the power to empower others to create change in our
Being a leader is more than simply holding a leadership position or having the ability to lead. Everyone is capable of being a leader, but not everyone exercises his or her leadership abilities. Each person’s idea of leadership is different. My idea of leadership has developed over time, and being a member of the President’s Leadership Class has helped me develop my philosophy of leadership further than what it was two months ago. My personal philosophy of leadership is the ability to effect change through leading by example, taking initiative, and encouraging others.
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
When we think of leadership, what comes to mind? Is it the bold, charismatic, and passionate person who takes the group on their back? Or is it really the more quiet and realistic leader who has a compromising attitude? Most people will think of a loud and passionate person who can grab the attention of an audience. But leaders come in all shapes and sizes. Leadership is defined by dictionary.com as the ability to guide or influence others to achieve a common goal. Although the term leader is used in our everyday lives, many people mistake it for close synonyms. Not all leaders have to be the boisterous, bold, and burly people that most people think of them to be. More often than not, a leader will be the commanding one in the group. But there
A leader is someone who stands out among his or her peers and is chosen to be placed into a position that requires setting an example and providing direction for that group. Although anyone can be chosen as a leader, he or she must be willing and deserving of this position.
I chose to attend Xavier University for many reasons. Some reasons include: continuing my education route, receiving a unique education, and strengthening my Christian beliefs. Since a second grader, I’ve always wanted to become a pediatric dentist and attend Xavier. Although my journey became rough, and seemed impossible, I can finally say, “I am a freshman at Xavier University of Louisiana, and I know for a fact that attending Xavier will allow me to become the best pediatric dentist I can be!”
Before now, I never really thought about being a leader. I always believed a leader was someone at the top, making decisions like a general in the army. The summit gave me a lot different perspectives on what a leader actually is. One thing that was said that really stuck with me was, “your college degree isn’t just for you. It is also for all those who come after you.” It was then that I really understood what a leader is. A leader is one who works their hardest to become the best person they can be, so they can set an example for others and help those who come after them.
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University is an excellent place to create a better future for myself and for my community. At this University I can make others around me strive to be the best they can be by bring my unique passion and communication skills to campus. When I was a child I was very shy and quiet and now I have realized how much I have grown. After being in high school working on group assignments and joining extracurricular activities, I have built a great relationship with the students in my high school. In particular, the French Club that I joined during high school really helped me comfortably connect with my peers. If I am given the opportunity to attend Florida A&M University, I will help the campus community
In class we defined leadership as using relationships to influence others. Before I came to the Academy I believed that a person could only lead their peers or subordinates. I did not believe that a subordinate could lead their superior. In high school I had many opportunities to develop my leadership with peers and subordinates. I was an officer of National Honor Society, and using that influence and my prior knowledge of NHS activities from the year before I was able to practice my leadership with my peers. I learned how to communicate in a manner to convince them to take action quickly, but not in a way that would seem overbearing or condescending. Furthermore, I was able to be a small group leader for a number of middle school retreats at my parish. In working with sixth grade boys I learned how to deal with insubordination and chaos, and with both of these groups of people I began to understand what was needed in a relationship between a leader and a follower. Our relationship had to be characterized by sincerity and respect. In both of these activities, those that I was leading could have easily stepped back and not paid attention to anything I was asking them to do. I had to convince them that I was absolutely dedicated to what I was trying to do, and that I had their best interest in mind. When leading middle school retreats I had to be a role model and show I valued my relationship with
Prior to read all the articles and the book, I did not regard myself as having any leadership position because I believed that to be a leader you need to have a title. Moreover, in my opinion leaders were people that exerted power over someone else. However, after reading the book You Don’t Need a Title to be a Leader, by Mark Sanborn my definition of leadership changed. According to Mark Sanborn (..), “leaders are people that inspire and influence others, coordinate efforts and work with others to achieve goals, affect the quality of others experiences, and shape their life and carriers (p.).” Through this point of view, I can consider myself as being a leader in many aspect of my life. I am a leader as a nurse when a coordinate care
For many years, I have been told by teachers, family, and friends that I am a good leader. Until fairly recently, I had never truly thought about what it means to be a good leader and just took it as a compliment. Leadership is an intangible concept which cannot be properly outlined in a dictionary, but one which must be formed and explained only through one’s own philosophies and experiences.
Leadership is something that people are born with. It is an inherent charm and it doesn’t hide even if you want to hide it. There is a leader amongst us and he or she is the one that leads other people to great things by inspiring and motivating people to do good deeds. Leadership has been described as “a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”. This way a leader can decide what work goes in and goes out. Good leaders in history have left a mark in walks of life. But great leaders, they’re different. Great leaders have the ability to make each and every individual re-think their life decisions and choices by
According to Webster’s Dictionary, leadership is the power or ability to lead other people, the act or instance of leading. I believe that Leadership is an art, the art to get others to follow and accomplish a common goal or task in a harmonic manner. A leader can be shown in all kinds of shapes and forms. To be a great leader many people believe it consists of modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart. Over the course of me learning how to become a better leader and being in leadership roles, I’ve learned that all these are very necessary to be a great leader.
My idea of leadership is being able to inspire others, motivate, set a vision, communicate, respect others, and of course, lead by example. A leader must have an honest understanding of who they are, what they know, and what they are capable of. To be a successful leader, you have to be able to convince your followers, not just yourself or your superiors, that you are worthy of being followed. In my opinion, this can build confidence in their followers to have faith in you, in order to be able to lead. I strongly believe that good leaders are made rather, and not born. If you have the desire and willpower, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders are developed through a never ending process of self-study, education, training, and
As a dedicated, hardworking, and energetic individual there are several qualities I could bring to the table at Baylor University. To name a few, I could be a great addition to the community service and involvement not only on campus, but in the Waco metropolitan area, because I’m passionate about giving back. My experience in community service throughout my life includes a local service club, Changemakers, my school’s Leo club where I volunteered to make props for my town’s Christmas festival, at concessions in several elementary school fairs, and running our school’s recycling program, shows that I work hard to serve my community. Another quality I could bring to Baylor is my energy. I enthusiastically and passionately commit to everything
A leader is a person who takes risks, attempts to achieve shared goals, and inspires others to action (Marquis & Huston,
