The Z boys skaters had one girl in their team named Peggy. She was a great skater and skated just like of the boys. In the documentary she said that others talked about how she skated and some of the girls questioned her why she skated like a guy and even protested her to the judges. She wasn’t disqualified for her style, the judges actually said that she was better than some of the guys. She was not offended by the questions at all, she was actually really proud when the judges gave her props. When I started my workout routine more than 4 years ago and decided to get healthy, I started doing P90X and other workouts. Now my favorite is MMA Les Mills Combat and there’s a lot of punching. So I decided to incorporate workout with a punching
“That’s so cute!” It is a disgusting phrase to hear as an athlete, to have all your dreams and desires wrapped up and defined as “cute”. No one says this to wrestlers or runners or swimmers. Yet it is a common reaction to the phrase, “I’m a figure skater”. It is as if all the frustration and falls and tears are ignored. No one realizes how much the act of being a figure skater has ingrained itself in my day to day life - that sometimes destructive drive to achieve, the need for perfection because it is the only acceptable outcome. Still, I am constantly summed up or written off as a girl with a “cute” hobby. Skating is not another trife hobby. Figure skating has become a repetitive gruel of day in-day out passion. To me, there is nothing “cute”
When you think about boxers, we think big and buff and brutal. I sat down with Atlanta Boxer Adrian Dub after his gym session. He was pretty big and buff, but not so much brutal. His energy was very comforting, and you can hear the happiness in his voice. Before he started boxing, Adrian is a liberian man with a son and owed the mother child support. Dub came to boxing two years ago, as a solution for weight loss. His friends encouraged him to turn it into a career. “Archie be hitting with the left and right knock out”, that is what his good friend used to say when he first started out. This pro boxer loves what he does, but Dub admits that it can get challenging. Boxing is already a workout for the average person, but when you are a boxer you must workout on top of the sport.
It is something you notice everyday, in many forms of media. Commercials, ads, magazines, and the internet all depict this occurrence with female athletes. She is short haired, square framed, dressed in a large loose fitting clothing. She rides along on her skateboard at an empty skate park. She appears to be sweaty and dusty from a day of riding and falling. As she rides along, ahead of her is a ledge. Red faced and tired, she attempts to land a trick over the ledge and succeeds. Her name is Lacey Baker, and is said to be one of the best female skaters in the world. Sound familiar? No, she is not someone the general public would be exposed to day by day. She does not fit into the female athlete stereotype of "The Femininity Game". "The Femininity Game" as told to us by Mariah Burton Nelson, an author, expert speaker, and former professional athlete in her "I Won, I 'm Sorry" piece demonstrates how as female athletes will feel they must follow special role. She noted, "Like men, you 'll have to be smart and industrious, but in addition you 'll have to be like women" (575). Women are to be just as competitive as men but not to the extent to threaten their masculinity. Act lady-like and motherly with no hesitation. Many Female athletes have shown off their hard work though photographs posing in awkward positions or even nude. Caroline Wozniacki the No. 5 female tennis player in the world, and MMA champion Ronda Rouse who posed for the swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated are
Hockey is a sport thats origins may be from Persia, Egypt or China, while archaeological evidence shows an early ball-and-stick game played in Greece in the 400s BCE. As civilization spread, so did the games. In 1872, a young man from Halifax, Nova Scotia named James Creighton moved to Montreal, bringing the sport of ice hockey with him bringing with him hockey sticks and skates. Which in turn a man named Lord Stanley created the first national hockey organization. In 1912 the very first professional hockey game. I’ll present my information in chronological order with also talking about how and when hockey affected the country presented.
Wrestling has been a very important factor in my life ever since someone suggested it my freshman year of high school. Even though I have not wrestled a lot I would say I am very literate in the sport.
It is the nature of boxing that the athlete will compete in a series of two to three minute segments, or rounds, with one-minute rest intervals between each round. The boxer’s training program is similar to those found in most contact sports, emphasizing physical fitness and endurance. Boxing is unique as it places equal emphasis on the ability of the athlete to deliver and to absorb powerful physical blows in competition,
As for sources, Adams’ selection meets the demands of her article: she includes works that are from the period she is writing on as well as literature on the topic that is only a decade or two old. She uses a combination of books written during the first years of figure skating and all throughout the nineteenth century, as well as articles written about the same things in the present day. This wide selection strengthens her thesis, as she is able to compare works from the present with the writings of the past in order to accurately detail shifting ideas about figure skating and gender throughout the period she is focusing on. On the whole, the thesis is well-developed; Adams’ explanation of the history behind her thesis supports it with concrete evidence, which can be found from the quotes she takes from works written during the nineteenth century.
“I knew (Miller) was good (before Kent State’s camp),” DePalma said. “I came in ready to brawl with him. Then he whooped me the first time wrestling. I didn’t know what to think. I’m like, ‘I can’t believe they’re even recruiting me still.’”
Once upon a time in Chino Hills, California there was a family full of ballers coincedently owning the last name Ball. The three kids, Lonzo, Liangelo, and Lamelo were each magical on the court, and when you got them on the court together it was like poetry in motion. The way the brothers dished the ball amongst themselves, almost appearing as if they knew each other's very next move, was truly a pleasure to the eyes. As the boys continued to tear up their competition in a high scoring and fast-paced manner, their notoriety and fame continued to grow. It was very clear that the Ball boys were on a path of stardom.
The 97 Boyz is the name of a brand created by two 17 year old African American guys from South New Jersey named Charldez and Jamal. They live in a small town called Capitol City with a population of 18,097 people. The name 97 Boyz was set-up as a brand to sell clothing and other fashion items to high school students. 97 is the year both boys were born. These two longtime friends have been together since their pop warner days on the town football team and now on the high school wrestling team. They have a bright future ahead of them, but then an unexpected twist happens and they must grow-up quickly with new found wisdom about
It was thought that you had to be skinny because if you were considered big you were not able to lift yourself off the ice during big jumps. Tonya Harding who was not a size two proved them wrong by being the first American woman to successfully land a triple axel in competition. In some cases it is true that being smaller does help a skater reach more rotations and height. The entire United States Figure Skating Association panel, that sentenced Tonya Harding were all men at the time. These men held biases against her because they felt that the was a bad face of the United States Figure Skating Association. Also most men felt no sympathy towards her and her backstory. Coming from a poor family Tonya Harding had to make all of her dresses from scratch. It it true that physical presentation is very important to the judges not just the physical skating. Whereas other skaters were able to hire someone the make their costumes for them. Since Tonya Harding was such a controversial skater because she was different it is obvious why the skating community thought that she was not the right face of the skating

Hockey is an iconic sport for Canadians. It represents our heart, spirit, and dedication as a country. For years it has been what makes us who we are. But since the beginning of the sport, men’s hockey has been more popular than women’s. This sparks the idea of what gender inequality is like anywhere around the world. It is important to keep sports gender neutral and balanced. We can change hockey for women. The struggle for gender equality is prominent in hockey in Canada, and action needs to be taken in order to prove that gender inequality is a problem universally.
An example of a female athlete being ridiculed for portraying society’s idea of non-femininity is Martina Navratilova. Martina was the first female tennis player who began to play tennis more as a power sport than a sport of technique. Subdued by an oppressive communist system that controlled the Czech Tennis Federation, she was seen to be playing in the style of men instead of playing women's tennis. As she did not fit into society's image of how a woman should look, behave and play tennis, she was ridiculed and branded as the proverbial ‘bad egg’ when compared to her contemporaries. Additionally, she was branded as a lesbian, which caused more hardship for her as she was forced to face a world which was much more homophobic at that time than it is now. Her sexual orientation is not a prime issue; it was something that was used against her and something that was assumed simply because she did not portray the feminine image that is expected of women.
“You may improve your health and have a physically fit body by getting into a boxing fitness training program,”(Markovsky, The Benefits of Boxing Training for Fitness). When people hear the word boxing they think of the most sordid and disgusting sport but the truth is that boxing relieves stress and makes people feel good knowing that they are getting into shape and that they can protect themselves. Boxing works the muscles hard so that they recuperate quickly allowing the body to work again the next day. Most people train in boxing simply to relieve stress and get rid of their anger. There are boxing classes all around the world and there are also many boxing venues in each city that have the intentions of teaching self- defense, learning to be more vigilant and physically enhancing people's bodies. Studies show that boxing helps keep the heart rate at seventy-five to eighty-five percent of the regular heart beats,(Markovsky, The Benefits of Boxing Training for Fitness). People have actually created videos teaching boxing and workout videos that involve
