Many years ago, there was a clash between Zeus and Poseidon. Poseidon felt jealous of his brother, for Poseidon always tried to provide calm waters for the fishermen of a tiny village, allowing them to feed their families. However, the fishermen praised Zeus for providing calm winds to be able to sail by, enabling them to catch fish. In their ignorance, they didn’t see Poseidon’s hard work filling their nets with fish and calm waters and neglected him and his temples. All along, however, the temples to Zeus would fill with worshippers, and feasts were held in his Zeus’s honor, while Poseidon’s temples continued to fall into disrepair. Many
Both Athena and Poseidon are gods, and both are under the rule of Zeus, however they are very different in the way they have interactions with Odysseus. Athena, the gray-eyed goddess help Odysseus on his journey, and also helps Penelpoe and Telemachus with their personal struggles. Poseidon, on the other hand has a grudge against Odysseus for maiming his offspring, the Cyclops. When Odysseus revealed his real name to the Cyclops, the Cyclops called upon Poseidon to curse him and make his journey even harder. In a way, it is like Athena and Poseidon are battling against each others' will. Athena is trying to make sure Odysseus makes it home safe, while Poseidon is trying to make his homeward journey as difficult as possible.
One story that shows the competition between Poseidon and the other gods and goddesses is when he and Athena tried to persuade the citizens of Athens to make one of them their patron god (Gall 48). Poseidon’s gift was that of a spring that bubbled from the ground. The people were amazed at this site. Unfortunately for Poseidon, the water was as salty as the sea and it could not be drunk. Athena’s gift was that of an olive tree (Gall 48). The citizens loved this gift and chose her to be their patron and in her honor, named their city Athens (Cavendish (2074).
“About Poseidon, a great god, I begin to sing, the shaker of the earth and of the barren sea” (Morford, Lenardon, and Sham, 171). Poseidon in Greek Mythology, or Neptune in Roman Mythology, is the God of the Earthquakes and of the Seas. He is known for his “severe and rough” nature and is associated with “the surge of the seas” (Morford, Lenardon, and Sham, 171). Poseidon is often underrepresented in myth but his role is pivotal due to the fact that he ruled the earth and the seas. Travel via the sea was essential in the spreading of culture during this time period and worship to Poseidon played an important role.
The god I chose is Poseidon and I will explain his powers, accompleshments, and life in the pages listed below. Poseidon is a very important because he is one of the major three gods called the big 3. He is the brothers of the other two, Zues and Hades. Since the big 3 swore to never have kids they couldn’t marry humans, so Poseidon married a sea-nymph named Amphitrite. He was the god of the sea and horses and protected and ruled both of those things. There are many rivers with their own gods, poseidon was the god of all water in general. Other than the sea and horses he is also the god of earthquakes and can cause or stop them. When he was not on Mount Olympus he was in or near the water at pretty much all times. Other than being able to
A ship set sail from the island of Mykonos, sailing to Mount Olympus. The captain of the boat was Poseidon. They were on the Aegean Sea. The voyage was supposed to take over a month, but Poseidon was the sea god so he sped up the trip by having mermaids pull the boat. The mermaids got tired fast, so Poseidon sent them back to his sea palace. About halfway through the voyage, the crew refused to work together.
Poseidon, also know as Neptune in Roman mythology, the God of the Sea. Do you know him? If you don’t, here’s a little “guide” all about him, telling you about his family, friends, his worst enemies, his attributes, divine powers, and his connections to the modern world. Are you ready?
Today, there are many parts of the world associated with the Greek gods/goddesses and Greek mythology. Poseidon is one of the more familiar gods. Most people may not know all the details of his mythology. Poseidon is the powerful god he is because of his importance to Greek mythology, his family, his traits, and his myths.
Christopher Reeves once said, "A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles. " This quote basically sums up Hercules' life. Granted that he was not necessarily an ordinary hero considering that he was the offspring of Zeus, God of the Sky. Regardless of the fact that he was the son of Zeus and considered to be the strongest man, Hercules still had to overcome many speed bumps in his life. Hercules overcame these obstacles by being courageous, acting upon his anger, and using his cleverness.
Poseidon vied with Athena to be patron deity of Athens. The god demonstrated his power and benevolence by striking the Acropolis with his three-pronged spear, which caused a spring of salt water to emerge. Athena, however, planted an olive tree, which was seen as a more useful favor.
The conclusion of the Titanomachy, the war between the titans and the olympic gods led to the creation of man as two spared titans Prometheus and his brother Epimetheus shaped man out of mud as Athena the goddess of wisdom breathed life into the clay figures. With the creation of man and animals, prometheus assigned Epimetheus to give the creatures of earth various qualities such as Swiftness, cunningness, strength, fur and wings. However as he got to man, all the good qualities where taken leading to Prometheus giving man the ability to stand upright like the gods and the power of fire. Prometheus began to favor man more then the olympians as Zeus demanded man to sacrifice portion of each food to the gods leading to Prometheus tricking Zeus.
Both the original Greek tale Hercules and the Disney recreation are rich in *metaphor and symbolism, though the film assist in providing a visual translation of these literary devices. In this paper I will be analyzing and comparing the 1997 film, “Hercules”, with the Grecian story of Herakles, demonstrating how new information can often alter how things are interpreted/received. In the Disney rendition of the tale Hercules, Hercules, the son of (Zeus) and (Hera) begins life on Mount Olympus, but is cast to earth after his father’s brother, and lord of the underworld, (Hades) kidnaps the infant Hercules with an intent to kill, preventing him from reaching his full power at the age of eighteen. In (insert name) attempt to replace Hercules’ godly mortality with that of an average human (so that he can be killed), the process is interrupted by
The ablitys of a person show how powerful they are. Both Hercules and The Rock are both well renowned for their strength. Both are very strong and powerful members in their respective society’s.
“WHAT!” Zeus screamed. “HE IS GOING TO CHEAT AND TRY TO TRICK ME OUT OF MY THRONE!” “go find him and banish him to the moon to Poseidon.”
Many years ago when the Titans had recently been defeated , Poseidon and Zeus were having an argument.Poseidon was mad at Zeus for sinking Atlantis Poseidonis city. Zeus was trying to lie his way out of the argument , but he only made Poseidon more mad.Meanwhile in the deep ocean far away from the now ruins of Atlantis another fight was brewing , the sharks' who were at the time the slaves of the dolphins wanted freedom from the dolphins. One Shark named Delphin decided that he would no longer be a slave to the dolphins and would stand and fight to get the sharks their freedom.Soon the argument between the sharks and dolphins got so bad that Poseidon had to step in and resolve the conflict.Since the sharks were good workers and he favoured the
I 've argued long and loud that the polytheistic gods were not supernatural deities but flesh-and-blood extraterrestrials. I 'm not the only person who has come to this conclusion - there 's an entire set of 'ancient astronaut ' buffs who also have argued equally long and loud that the mythologies of the gods are really the history of extraterrestrials that have influenced humanity over the millennia. Rather than cover generalities yet again, I 'll focus on probably the best known of the polytheistic gods - Zeus, IMHO the extraterrestrial (though one could just about pick any of the thousands of polytheistic deities and perform a similar analysis).
