Last summer I volunteered to be a camp counselor at a camp in Blowing Rock, North Carolina called Camp Sonshine. This camp is different from others in that they bring children ages 5 to 18 from inner city Memphis, Tennessee to the Appalachian Mountains. This
As a student, I have demonstrated many works of service to my community and school. Service opportunities have shaped me into the person I am today and these projects have made me realize how fortunate I am for all that I have. While I've been doing these service projects through the years, it has been a pleasure seeing the joy on the faces of people that aren't as fortunate as I am. Service projects that I have completed include managing the fish booth at the St. Leo's Parish Festival, being an altar server at St. Leo's Parish, helping cook dinner for the Ridgway Fire Department during carnival day setup, participating in the St. Marys Light Up Night by dancing, and Christmas caroling to local residents. I also participated in a zombie/princess
This semester I’ve been volunteering at the Star of Hope dealing helping with women and children. Founded in 1907, Star of Hope is a Christ-centered community dedicated to meeting the needs of homeless men, women and their children. Positive life changes are encouraged through structured programs which focus on spiritual growth, education, employment, life management and recovery from substance abuse. On any
Assisted young children between the grades of preschool to 8th grade in their education. I decided to volunteer because the children of today will be the children of the future and the more smart and educated they are the better they will be in the future. Another reason I helped was because it is hard for young children to adapt to the lifestyle of constantly moving from one place to another. Since their parents are migrants it can have a negative impact on them and their education. I remember one little girl is from Florida but every summer her parents move up to Michigan to work in the fields, but once the harvest is over they move back to Florida. She was behind in school and with the help of teachers and myself we motivated and helped her out so she was able to catch up. I really enjoyed volunteering the past two summers ago at the summer migrant program. If I had another opportunity to help I
After searching for hours over the internet and sending many emails, I chose the Washington United Youth Center (WUYC) to volunteer at . It was simply perfect; there were many eager students at the school, located in a poor area, waiting for help. It pleased me to see many students
Last summer I was on the administrative team helping to keep the camp in order, and making sure all churches were sufficiently informed of the important information they needed. I also worked with the Ryde On team; they bring ski boats to the Georgia Baptist Convention Center and have tubing and skiing for the campers.
Every summer between 7th grade and my freshman year of college, I would volunteer at a local summer program. This consisted of helping the teachers come up with lesson plans, activities, and games to play. During my last two years, I gained more responsibilities as the “Head Leader in Training” and managed the other volunteers, while designating tasks and responsibilities. I continued working with and coming up with activities during undergrad through the organization Project Literacy. After going over the lessons with the students, we would have a group activity or play a variety of sports with them. Working with children
For my service hours, I volunteered at St. John’s Vacation Bible School. Vacation Bible School took place in the basement of St. John’s Catholic Church during the week of June 15 - 19th. It was actually four days long because on Tuesday night the basement flooded, so Wednesday class was cancelled. I volunteered alone, but made many friends that week. The reason I volunteered for Vacation Bible School is because Mrs. Bronder told me about it and I was interested in doing it. This was my second summer volunteering at Vacation Bible School; the summer before I volunteered at LCC’s Vacation Bible School. The theme this year was Hometown Nazareth. The groups were named after the twelve tribes of Israel and the activities were based on what Jesus
Last year December 2014 I volunteered with the CMPD Explorers and the Salvation Army to provide gifts for children and their families all over the city of Charlotte, NC. The CMPD Explorer program is a program that is for high school students in the Charlotte who want to be police officers when they grow up or work with some type of law enforcement to interact with real police officers. In the program we practice real life scenarios that can happen all the time, go on trips, and volunteer in the community doing community service. I like the program because with community service you can help out families who cannot afford Christmas. Every Christmas the CMPD Explorers partner with the Salvation Army to provide Christmas for hundreds of families and thousands of children all over the city of Charlotte.
Applied for Thrivent action Team grant and did a community service project with confirmands and first communion kids at Plumb place. We bought Christmas gifts with the help of Vicky Lyon and delivered them and wished them a merry Christmas.
For the past couple of years I have volunteered in my local church. I have helped my priest by greeting people at the door, and handing out songs and books before mass. In the summer, I would take care of the younger kids at our church camp for a week. I recently started volunteering in our church choir. I now sing in the choir every Sunday mass.
One of the activities that I have done is volunteering. I've volunteered at St. Vincint de Paul by helping them get gifts and collecting food cans for people in need during Christmas time and for the pantry. We also helped out when the church had a festivel this includes enteraining the kids, giving out food, and face painting. I have also volunteered at the Samaritan Women Shelter. In the Samaritan I helped them organize the clothes and sort out donations that people would
I have also worked in my local church as a volunteer. Apart from being in the youth group that organized film and musical shows for the local community, I served in the multi-media unit of the church. This has afforded me the opportunity to handle studio equipment as well as prepare jingles, montage and promo for church
A few summers ago I volunteered in a local church food pantry in my community.
Over the summer beyond working at California Pizza Kitchen I was allowed the opportunity to work at the summer camp sponsored through my church. I was hesitant at first about being a volunteer because I thought it would be boring and about teaching the word to kids 14 and under about Christ. I was happy to know that wasn't the goal of the camp. During the camp the volunteers along with the campers were allowed the opportunity to go on several trips around Atlanta. This was because our pastor said he wanted to provide an opportunity for students to gain knowledge as well as experience everything that is available in Atlanta. Surprisingly many Georgians have not visited all that is available at their finger tips. Everyday before camp I arrived
