CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
This chapter entails background information, the problem, objective, questions, significance, definition of terms and the scope of the study of the thesis.
1.1 BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Workforce diversity refers to organizations that are becoming more heterogeneous with the mix of people in terms of gender, age, race, and education background (Robbins, 2009). A diverse workforce for instance, includes gender, age, ethnicity, and education background. According to Robbins (2009), workforce diversity has important implications toward management practices and policies. Frequently, diversity is viewed in a limited fashion, primarily addressing issues of race or gender differences, and linked to the laws providing protected status to certain groups. Broad definition of diversity has been used to encompass most characteristics that individuals possess that affects the way they think and do things.
Performance refers to the accomplishment of a given task measured against preset known standards of accuracy, completeness cost and speed. In contrast, performance is deemed to be the fulfillment of an obligation, in manner that releases the performer from all liabilities under the contract. As we enter the new millenium, diversity in the workforce is rapidly increasing. Businesses and organizations are living up to the great melting pot image the United States has always been popular for. Employees now reflect a diversity of cultural perspectives, ethnic backgrounds, ages, genders, physical abilities, and levels of education. This wave of multiculturalism is here to stay and cannot be ignored. It is in need of attention in order to uphold the well-being and success of businesses and organizations all over the country.
Workplace diversity is when there is diverse culture of individuals in the workplace. It is when there is a value placed on the variety of ideas, race, ethnicities, religion, gender, sexuality and orientation, which is flourishing in an environment. Depending on your employer and workplace, workplace diversity can vary based off several different factors. Usually, there is a preferential standpoint taken on the matter and it can be either display a high or a low context culture of diversity. According to Mason (2013) Workforce diversity has been described as “a double-edged sword; it has the potential for positive and negative outcomes” (p.659). Workplace diversity is important in a business setting because it carries forward a combination of different types of people to work together in unity, encourages uniqueness, innovative, creative approaches, and supports interesting divergent ideas to accomplish tasks or goals.
From Hollywood to the the social sector, diversity, rather the lack thereof, has been a topic of conversation. Although many organizations have begun to advocate for diversity, more work must be done. Across the social sector,women and people of color remain severely underrepresented in leadership positions. Organizations must become intentional about creating a diverse workforce and implementing inclusive policies that foster positive work environments. When employees feel represented and included they are happier and more likely to contribute to fulfilling the organization's mission.
Business environments today display diversity, a numerical composition that reflects different kinds of people, such as men and women of different ethnic origins, educational experiences, and professional backgrounds (Beamish, Morrison, Inkpen, & Rosenzweig, 2003). A vast amount of organizations are emulating a diverse workforce. Fair treatment of employees is the responsibility of the human resource management team within a firm. Footsteps of past generations are the facilitating mechanism allowing today’s generation to participate in a safe and fair workplace. Specific rules and regulations assist in equal employment opportunities for every employee. The Equal Employment
Diversity in the organization can affect the employees and their behavior in many ways. The effect can be positive and negative in the same time. The positive effect is, it will wider employee knowledge, skills, and attitude which will allow the organization to become more competitive globally. Higher diversity of employees mean higher diversity of knowledge, skills and abilities. Sharing experience inspires innovative thinking (Claudia Quaiser-Pohls, 2013, p. 41). In 2015, the United States civilian labor force rose to 157.4 million (Unemployment rate nears prerecession level by end of 2015: Monthly Labor Review: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2016). About half of the workforce were women and of the 157.4 million, about thirty-eight percent were non-white workers including Asian, Black, and Hispanic ethnicities. By 2024, it is projected that women will make up more than half of the United States labor force, in which, roughly twenty-three percent of the women will be of non-white ethnicities (Women 's Bureau (WB) Latest Annual Data - Labor force by sex, race and Hispanic ethnicity, 2015 annual averages and 2024 projections, n.d.). As women start to dominate the workforce, and younger workers continue to enter labor force, organizations in the United States are becoming more and more diverse. What was once dominated by white males, organizations are now a rich combination of different cultures, backgrounds and different belief systems. To ensure an ongoing efficient and productive work environment, a diversity training program should be put in place to address the tension and conflicts that arise from diversity in the workplace.
Diversity is what makes people different, not just culturally but in human differences. Having a multitude of differences in the workforce gives an organization the ability to use many ideas to reach a common goal. A person could say that a diverse group of people together in one room can accomplish greater achievements than a room filled with the same types of individuals. Managers understand the concept of diversity, and how important diversity is to the success of a company’s ability to implement programs that continue to develop a harmonious and diverse workplace. Organizations have been becoming increasingly diverse in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, and nationality. This diversity brings substantial potential benefits such as better decision making, greater creativity and innovation, and more successful marketing to different types of customers. But, increasing cultural differences within a workforce also bring potential costs in higher turnovers, interpersonal conflicts, and communicational breakdowns.
