of Atlantic cod, herring, and California sardines drove them to the brink of extinction. These high disruptions cause regional depletions of animal resources which is starting to cause a global problem. There has never been a more urgent time for fishing nations to make a commitment towards the sustainability of our oceans. More than 80% of the world’s fisheries have been, or are being pushed beyond their limits and are in dire need of strict management plans. Populations of fish and elasmobranch
sustainable food sources. Approximately one billion people, mainly in developing countries such as China, India, and the Philippines, are relying on fish as a major source of many nutrients, including protein. However, overfishing, which refers to the fishing industry removing more fish than can be replenished by the remaining fish, is becoming a big problem, as fish in the ocean are not an unlimited resource. Most people are not aware of it, but overfishing can affect everyone on the planet. Overfishing
The tropical reef is a highly competitive environment where every organism is literally engaged in a daily battle for survival. Whether it’s competing for space, food or the opportunity to reproduce, the tropical reef is not quite the home sweet home Disney portrayed in Finding Nemo. While Disney may have been sloppy in terms of ecological accuracy and animal behavior, the movie did highlight some of the more interesting symbiotic reef relationships (e.g. Jacques or Nemo himself). These symbiotic
In class over the last couple of days we watched a movie called Racing Extinction which was about people may play a huge role in loss of at least half of the planets species. It showed the class that in the next generation they might not be able to ever see the vaquita. The movies gave perspective into how many animals we are losing. There are many occasions in life in which a person faces an arduous task and falls short of their goal, and in many cases they ultimately lose sight of what is important in life. Through trials and triumphs, it is a person's character that truly defines their successfulness in life. Ernest Hemingway, author of Old Man and the Sea, skillfully uses Santiago’s words, “A man can be defeated but not destroyed,” to echo the resiliency of not only an old man, but of the nature of the entire human race,
Caribbean Spiny Lobster The fishery for Caribbean spiny lobsters is well known in the Florida Keys and is one of the major industries that influence Florida’s economy. While this is a large and fruitful industry in the Florida Keys, it also comes with its disadvantages, particularly the traps that are used to catch the lobsters. I am getting an image of you fishing and you are getting so bothered as if you have been there forever but not a single fish has taken a nibble on your bait. And you just get so impatient that you started throwing rocks at your bobber. And I feel as if that just symbolizes your walk

While practicing a catch-and-release style of fishing regularly, I decided to bring a fish home one day. On the hazy summer day, I was a carefree dolphin, cruising down the hill at a relaxed speed. My bicycle had a metal rack behind the seat, to which I Duck-Taped a bucket onto, with the purpose of carrying my tackle box and fishing rod. My sister was closing in from behind on her

The threat of the Asian Carp entering Lake Michigan’s waterways has now become a serious issue. The main access into Lake Michigan for the Asian Carp would be through the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canals which connects to the Mississippi River. These natural waterways have also been connected to man made rivers to allow easier access to the lake for trading and transporting goods. Though along the river there are a couple of dams, this does not stop the Asian Carp, but merely slows the Carps movement
