Distinguish Between Micro, Mecio And Macro Levels Of Practice

At the Mezzo level, social workers interact with clients on a much broader level than they do at micro-level interventions. Mezzo-level practice includes engaging with clients as individuals as well as schools, families, task groups, local organizations, small businesses, or neighborhood residents. Mezzo-level social work works well when a social worker bringss clients together to beat daily challenges who may benefit from the same stakeholders. This paper will discuss single mothers in poverty at a mezzo level, which will include theory, intervention, change in the system, research and theory, as well as social work skills and values that impact work.

In looking at the historical development of social work, I think it is fair to say that the profession started with a focus on micro-level practice. For some time a variety of different people groups such as women and African-Americans were oppressed and discriminated against. “The effects of discrimination, ideological shifts, and economic and technological changes created social pressures, and the first organized efforts to respond to these pressures formed the basis for the creation of social work” (Netting, Kettner, McMurtry, & Thomas, 2012, p. 39).

Working with individuals or families is in an effort to solve problems such as housing, healthcare, transportation, or any other type of social service. The Panhandle Promise Project focuses on working with individual and families this is why the current practice system at the agency is the micro level system. Helping at-risk youth and their families in obtain needed services in order to improve their current living situation in hopes to end the cycle of incarceration with in the family.

One of the most useful models for social workers to implement is the generalist model. Since the goal of social work is to work with individuals and assist them in solving their problems, the generalist model seeks to create three levels of practice to better aide the individuals in direct practice service (Farley, Smith, & Boyle, 2011). These three levels are the micro, mezzo, and macro levels. The micro level refers to the systems that directly impact a single individual, whereas the mezzo level refers to the small groups (such as marriages and families) that impact the individual. Furthermore, the macro level refers to the large systems, such as cultures and large organizations, which can influence the person. With the establishment of the generalist model, the social worker can better aide the client and work directly with him to help him solve any problems or concerns he may have, and this model has become the most common operational model in social work, though it does have both advantages and disadvantages.

In comparing the different sociological perspectives, I believe it is important to use both micro and macro analysis to investigate this social problem. Micro analysis can be used to analyze individual problems in the nursing profession that cause many nurses to turn to drugs and alcohol. Macro analysis will look at the profession as a whole to see what can be done to improve conditions for nurses and to rehabilitate nurses who are in recovery. I personally would choose both methods because it is important to use different points of views to solve problems in our communities.

The system-level intervention works at the macro level with the partnership of both administration and the worker. It is a worker’s responsibility to understand the agency’s policies, resources, finances, and gaps in services. The more educated a worker is in system-level intervention, the more effective he or she will be able to bring positives changes to a program and the clients. Furthermore, at the system-level intervention, the worker should also try to influence on behalf of the most susceptible, if changes are made.

The Microsystem refers to the environment that has a direct influence on an individual; school, home, place of worship, teachers, and peers are included in the Microsystem. A personal example is that my mother, an extremely prominent figure in any person’s Microsystem, noticed that I had a rather good potential for working on creative stories. As a direct influence on me, she gave me praise on the stories that I showed her and gave me encouragement to continue working on my writing. Therefore, she directly influenced my psychological development since her praise heightened my self-esteem and allowed me to have a good self-image of myself thanks to the environment I was raised in.

It is likely that some professional practitioners will focus their attention primarily in one area than the other, however all social worker experience situations in which macro-level interventions are usually the right action to respond to certain need or problem. Perhaps, macro practice can be define as professional guided interventions which is designed to bring about change in organization, community and or policy areas. Macro practice is meant to prepare social worker for full time agency administration, program planning, community organizing, or policy analysis position. In the event of taking full time macro roles, the worker will need a more advanced skill than what was stated above. It is imperative that all student of social work will be confronted with different roles after graduation, they will still be involved in macro activities, some students are currently working as a social worker with whom work directly with clients and some are coordinators, planners, managers, administrators, organizers and policy analyst in various capacities. The macro, mezzo, and micro concepts used by social workers would have greatly enhanced Daisy’s life in many ways. First I would have applied the macro concept by doing one-to-one therapy with Daisy to find out why she hides the remainder of the chicken her father brings her under her bed. Also, I would have talked to her about trying other foods. By using the mezzo concept I would have incorporated group therapy into her plan by having Daisy in groups with people that is suffering with the same diagnosis. With Daisy able to be around people like herself, maybe she would have found better ways with coping with her problems. Firstly, Macro perspectives focus on the large scale aspects of society such as social stability and social change whereas Micro perspectives focus on the small scale level interaction between individuals such as a conversation. Micro perspectives talk about the day-to-day processes between individuals which human beings require. Human beings need people around them who they can relate to or form relationships and bond with which is a normal function of being a human, that is, to interact with others. On the other hand, Macro perspective deals with maintaining social order or structure among people. In addition, it focuses more on public concerns more than just the concerns of individuals. For instance, macro perspectives deals with issues of the world or society such as war, poverty, third world nations whereas micro perspectives analyses issues pertaining to the individuals such as the role of women, the nature of the family and factors or issues that cause people to migrate.
