Title Nearly 50,000 people commit suicide each year. Yet for every 23 attempts, there is only 1 completed act. Why is this? Surprisingly, the amount of suicide related deaths each year is increasing more and more. This is why something should be done. Although it is difficult to prevent suicides from happening, there are many methods that will help, such as treatment programs or relaxation techniques.

When someone has loss of energy they just wanna stay in the same place and be lazy all day everyday. Sometimes they just wanna sleep and they have a feeling of isolation. “Drinking also makes kids feel isolated, and allows them to feel that they can take bigger risks,” says Bennett Leventhal (Bennett Leventhal). Leventhal also says, “Most kids don’t realize that alcohol is a depressant, so drinking can turn a mild depression into a major one” (Bennett Leventhal). A way to know if drinking is a signal of committing suicide is to just watch and evaluate how many drinks that person is having, or how many times a day that person is drinking. Another signal that can show if someone is thinking about or showing signs of suicide is mental illness. Mental illness can also affect your mood. “When you learn to be self-aware with mental illness, you can save your own life,” Hines says (Kevin Hines). After the terrorist attacks of September 11th LifeNet became popular because people were affected so badly that they were trying to commit suicide. LifeNet has since been continually getting calls about people who are thinking about committing suicide. So the job of the workers is to goad the victims into not committing suicide. Another program that is big on suicide prevention is The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. This program gets between 1.1 and 1.2 million calls a year that mostly deal with suicide. The job of this program is to help individuals in suicidal crisis within the United States. Some other programs that are helpful to people's health are The Crisis Hotline and The National Hopeline Network. Also the Department of Health and Human Services now give a huge sum of money to the National Lifeline. This amount of money has been just over $2.7 million. "More people in the general population die from suicide than homicide in North America. There are almost 11 suicide deaths each year for every 100,000 people living in the United States, and for every suicide, there are between 8 and 25 attempts" (Brent 4203). Based on this research, the great effect of suicide is displayed. According to dictionary.com, suicide can be defined as "the intentional taking of one's own life." Suicide is a major issue for all people, but it most obviously affects those ranging from ten to twenty-four. People need to understand the tremendous ramifications caused from suicide everyday; when people take their lives, others lose their loved ones. Suicide, one of the leading causes of death of numerous people each day, has reached a crisis point for adolescents and young adults, and it needs to be prevented.
Suicide is a severe community health matter which can have lifelong negative consequences on individuals, families, and the society. Reduce suicidal risk factors and increase protective measures are the main objective of suicide prevention. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defined suicide as the “death caused by self-directed injurious behavior with intent to die as a result of the behavior; suicide attempt is “A non-fatal, self-directed, potentially injurious behavior with an intent to die as a result of the behavior; might not result in injury’; and suicidal ideation is “thinking about, considering, or planning suicide” (2015).
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has published a fact sheet of statistics on suicide in the United States. In 2007, it is reported that suicide was the tenth leading cause of death. Furthermore, for every suicide committed, eleven were attempted. A total of 34,598 deaths occurred from suicide with an overall rate of 11.3 suicide deaths per 100,000 people. (NIMH, 2010). Risk factors were also noted on this report and listed “depression and other mental disorders, or a substance abuse disorder (often in combination with other mental disorders). More than ninety percent of people who die by suicide have these risk factors (NIMH, 2010).”
The rate of suicide, the act or an instance of taking one's own life voluntarily and intentionally, increases each year. “More adolescents die each year from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, combined” (Preventing Teen Suicide, 2016, p.2). These facts show suicide is a serious problem among teens. Last year, teen suicide became the second leading cause of death in the United States confirming the significant increase in teen suicides.
There is at least 113 suicides each day or 1 every 13 minutes. Suicide among males is the seventh leading cause of death and the fourteenth leading cause in females. Most suicides are with a firearm and are carried out with a “ Saturday night special”. Stress is the number one cause among our youth, bullies, peer pressure, depression, and abuse. 41,100 people committed suicide in the United States in 2013. Our young teens today does not take time to look deeper into there problem and to seek out a better solution. They are looking for a quick fix but not realizing once the trigger is pulled the result is final with no turning back. Most people who has attempted suicide is more likely to try a second attempt and most have an underlying mental illness. There is many warming that someone may be in a suicide crisis. 42,773 people commit suicide every year in the United States. “Suicide is...the sincerest form of criticism life gets” Wilfrid Sheed. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. For every successful suicide, there are ten men and women who attempt suicide. And for every one of those, there are ten who think of killing themselves, but do not.(Some Reasons). People commit suicide for multiple reasons.
Suicide is something that can not be overlooked. It not only affects adults but teens as well. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US. Some warning signs of suicide are changes in eating or sleeping, depression, and/or obsessed with death. But suicide is not the go to option, there is prevention!

Suicide does not discriminate. People of all genders, ages, and ethnicities can be at risk. Suicidal behavior is complex and there is no single cause. In fact, many different factors contribute to someone making a suicide attempt. Suicide is complicated and tragic but it is often preventable. Knowing the warning signs for suicide and how to get help can help save lives.
The signs to someone who has already planned a suicide or is contemplating are usually dropping verbal hints. For example “I won’t be a problem for you much longer,” or “It’s no use, I won’t see you again “They’re giving prized possessions away, cleaning a normally messy thoughts. Also if they all of sudden are very cheerful following depression, and hallucinations and any mention of suicide or death. But they are many other reasons as to why teens attempt to take their lives, but the most common reasons are preexisting mental disorder like anxiety and a substance abuse problem. Many adults, parents, or friends ignore when someone talks about suicide when it needs to be taken seriously.
The Center for Disease Control is responsible for keeping track and providing facts and figures for suicide. They describe suicide as a serious problem and a leading cause of death in the United States. It is in fact the 10th leading cause of death across all age groups. In 2013, an estimated 41,149 people successfully committed suicide (Understanding). In contrast, 494,169 attempted to harm or kill themselves but failed (Understanding). Many more people are thought to have tried and not sought out help, leaving them an unknown factor in the equation. All in all, suicide and its attempt are responsible 6.1 billion dollars in medical and work loss costs in the United States annually (Understanding).
Some warning signs maybe that the person will constantly be talking about death or they could be calling or visiting their loved ones to say goodbye. Another one of the signs could be that they can switch from being very sad to being very calm or even look happy all of the sudden. Family members or friends of the individual should be very concerned if they show any of these symptoms especially if they have attempted suicide in the past. Now according to American Foundation of Suicide Prevention approximately twenty percent to fifty percent of people who commit suicide have tried to commit suicide
Suicide is a growing problem around the world and is the third leading cause of death. Statistics show the seriousness of the situation. According to W.H.O. (World Health Organization) and C.D.C. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), over 800,000 people die by suicide every year with 42,773 being Americans. The National Alliance on Mental Illness says the leading cause of people committing suicide is untreated depression, but “only half of all Americans experiencing an episode of major depression receive treatment” (“Causes”). The most successful treatment today for depression is therapy and/or prescript-ed medication. The other common causes of suicide are other mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, postpartum depression, PTSD, or others similar. Today, it is a constant battle to find ways to prevent suicide more efficiently.

Suicide is a main source of death around the world and ranks among the three main causes of death among young adults aged between 15-45 years. Indeed, a response to this continuous worldwide issue, the World Health Organization called for the prevention of suicide (WHO, 2015). Several studies have evaluated some of the contributing factors, however, the connection between suicide and the evaluated factors is conclusively positive or negative.
