People may say that the true years of fashion began in the late nineteen forties and went on through the early nineteen sixties. If you look at fashion today, its almost repeated the look from sixty years ago. In each generation fashion trends become based on history and/or important events. in the nineteen forties fashion was being modeled by the military wear. World War II caused a drastic change in the way clothes were being made and worn. In the nineteen fifties Americans admired the fashion of movie stars and music artists. 1960’s Inspired Trend. The 1960s are back in fashion in a huge way. One can see the inspiration from the ‘60s all over the runway and retail stores. When looking at forecasts for fall 2014, Trend Council predicted ‘60s inspired clothing would be in style during the fall 2014 season. They predicted the styles seen would be elegant shift dresses, hitting about mid thigh. The shift dress was first introduced in the early 60s and the style immediately became popular. To consumers in the 1960’s, the shift dress represented youth, freedom and the revolutionary spirit of American young women. Now the shift dress is classy again with a high neck, long sleeves and neutral colors.

This was a dominant look for women in the late 1940’s and well throughout the 1950’s. Those of both high and middle class were usually the ones to wear fashions as such as these especially since it was now affordable for people of the growing middle class.

The 1960s was crammed full of many impacting events and important figures. From Hitchcock releasing one of the greatest thrillers of all time, Psycho, to Marilyn Monroe’s untimely death, to the infamous Woodstock festival. This era changed history completely and made the United States think twice about its youth. Events of the 1960s are still impacting our country as we know it today. The sudden pull from the conservative ‘50s changed America’s views on all aspects of life, including fashion, entertainment, and lifestyles.

In Australia, the fashion of the 1960s emulated the political and cultural changes at the time. This fashion revolution was youth driven and showed their rejection of social standards. For women, the mini skirt came into trend, introduced by fashion icon Twiggy (Leslie Hornby). This above-the-knee skirt came into fashion in a revolt against people telling women how to express themselves and their bodies that came with the womens rights movement and the introduction of the pill. Men wore tunics, capes and more feminine clothing as pants became tighter and they dawned silk scarfs. This shift from masculine clothing to dabbling in the side of feminine, was because of the changing idea of gender and sexuality. Men also tried to recreate the look of the Beatles; in sharp and clean suits due the bands popularity at the time. Nearing the end of the 1960s, hippie fashion came into style. This era of fashion was dominated by bright, swirling colours, tie-dye, paisley prints, loose fitting clothing, flowers, peace signs, etc. This change in fashion was in response to the Vietnam war. People wore their clothes as a political statement, showing their embracement towards love and freedom.

Technology has had a major impact on the progress of fashion between the 1945’s and 1960’s and beyond. People used to have busy lifestyles before the growth of technology to help them. During WW2, there was a shortage of fabrics and people needed to preserve them. However, once the world got into a stable post-war time which were the 50s, there were more intricate outfits which used large amounts of fabric. Technology also allowed more different varieties of dyes and fibers to be made which added more of a personal touch to fashion and gave a feeling of wellbeing and comfort.

Two murders of influential Americans caused riots in the cities across the country. Martin Luther King Jr and Robert Kennedy was killed. The ‘Hippie’ movement started in the late 1960s into the early 70s. The ‘hippie’ style came from all corners of the world. The clothing style and fabrics were inspired by non-western cultures. Natural fabrics and tie-dyed patterns were some of the many popular designs, including handcraft clothes that were often decorated with beads and sequences.

1960’s Decade Study- Fashion and Music The 1960’s in Australia was a decade marked by the new found domination of youth culture and immense social change, with fashion and music of the previous eras long forgotten as the adolescent baby boomers demanded their own style. The morals of their parent’s era were questioned and they continuously opposed against government decisions. There was a newfound resistance for issues such as environmental matters, racial equality, equal gender rights and matters such as the nuclear industry, the Vietnam War and conscription.

A Change in Times The new music, clothing style, and drug use made the 1960s into the decade it was. New genres of music was formed along with the release of new music that reached the top of the charts. The clothing style definitely changed as well.

During the 1940’s women’s clothing consisted of squared shoulders, narrow hips, and skirts. Suits were very popular, and women learned to DIY, and conserve material. There are a variety of different styles,trends, and fashion in every part of the world that come strongly and later on slowly die out. One of the strongest influences in trends was in the year of 1920, in the United States of America. During this time of America many people were living the American dream; this decade was when fashion was born.
