Have you ever seen an event or scene in which a young child writes in his/her diary, restating what took place in the past and how he/she feels about it? In the novel 1984, written by George Orwell, it starts off by viewing the protagonist, Winston Smith, living in rural London controlled by a dictatorship led by a leader named “Big Brother”. Setting a depressing and gloomy tone throughout the story, he begins to hold grudges toward the government and how it rules is absurd and childish prevalent to any being. Winston later purchases a journal secretly from a store nearby, returning back to his apartment only to start writing criticisms towards Big Brother. At the same time, surveilling cameras are watching Winston committing a “thought-crime”, …show more content…
He spent his first year and a half at where his father was stationed to then be taken by his mother along with his older sister, Marjorie, to England and settled at a city named Henley-on-Thames." (Biography.com Editors 1). Barely knowing his father and younger sister, he continued to live on and grow up, going to school learning all he could. One day, "he was bit by a writhing bug causing Orwell to develop and battle bronchitis and the flu for most of his childhood. It was also acknowledged that he was seen creating conversations with himself or an imaginary friend, not known if it was a side effect from the diseases or just caused by feeling lonely and isolated." (1). For some reason, he was very intelligent in writing poems while he was battling the enlisted diseases and even "one of his poems were published in the newspaper at the age of 11." (1). Not long after that, he "was sent to boarding school getting used to the England's class system and earning scholarships to Wellington College and Eton College to continue his studies." (2). Completing his schooling at Eton, "he found himself at a dead end in unable to pay off the rest of his university education. Orwell's other option was to join the India Imperial Police Force in 1922; in the following five years in Burma, Orwell resigned from his post only to return back to England continuing his work as a writer." We all know George Orwell is only a pen name Eric chose for his writing career, reason behind it was not to embarrass his family, “but this did not happen until he released his first publication, ‘Down and Out in Paris and London’, in 1933” (George Orwell (1903 – 1950) 1)
When reading part one of 1984 by George Orwell many thoughts and questions popped into my head. Why would a powerful government rewrite and brainwash its citizens? Or why are they under constant surveillance? As I further read along something interested me. One of our main characters and protagonist, Winston, knows or believes that he knows all of the punishments that are done by the Thought Police and the Inner Party. He contemplates on whether or not he should start a diary. He knows it may not be a law in starting one, but he knows the dangers of it if the Thought Police would find it. This part catches my interest the most because he knows that he is doing something rebellious, yet he continues to go along with it since he
Two of Orwell’s first literary works were his essays regarding his experiences as a policeman in Burma during imperialization from Europe. These essays include “A Hanging” and “Shooting an Elephant.” In these essays, he shows his clear disagreement of oppression, even while working for the oppressors. Orwell writes

If a tree falls in a forest and nobody's around to hear it, does it make a sound? This thought experiment is used to understand the nature of reality and physics. It can be rewritten to ask if an event happens and no one is around to observe it, did it happen? The first problem is that if an event happens yet no one observes it then we cannot be certain that that event happens. Reality only dictates that the end result occurred but the process can be vastly different than expected. Orwell's novel 1984 explores the limits of our notions of reality and explains how it can be twisted to make events which have happened not happen. The party controls reality since they “control the mind. Reality is inside the skull”. Reality as we know it is the byproduct of individual signals being sent to the brain and the
This book starts in London on April fourth, 1984. The book is written in partly third person, and partly in first person. The book is divided into three distinct parts. The first part is showing you the main character, Winston Smith and his differences and frustration with the world he works and lives in. The country or the “Super state” he lives in called Oceania is run under a government called INGSOC (English Socialism). The leaders of the nation are called "The Party." The Party is divided into two sections, The Inner Party, and The Outer Party. The "Rich" and the "middle-class." There is a third group of people called "The Proles," or "The Proletariat" who are the lower class or the poorer class. The main leader of this government is called “Big Brother” and there also a very famous conspiracy theory about a traitor of the state by a person called “Emmanuel Goldstein” who was part of the inner party and then betrayed the state. The book is about the life of Smith with his frustration towards the government and the society he lives and the journey he embarks on from hating the party to finding comfort in another party worker and to eventually falling in love with big brother. The book is divided into three parts with the first part explaining the dynamics and structure of the new world. The second part focuses on how Smith finds solace by committing “though crime” as his act against the party and finally,
Best distinguished by his cautionary novels on the rise of communism, George Orwell was frequently influenced by his upbringing, careers, and experiences fighting fascism. Born Eric Arthur Blair, George Orwell was born in British India to a family he would later famously described as “lower-upper-middle class”. Academically inclined, he was able to obtain a scholarship to St. Cyprian’s, one of the best preparatory schools in England, although he often showed loathing towards the strict policies and teachers at the school. However, in the later years of school his academic interest slipped and with it his grades. With little options George Orwell joined the Indian imperial police and was sent to Burma.
Books at that time were stories about fiction more than reality. Authors took it upon themselves to create impossible narratives to add a dramatic effect, so the reader can be immersed in the book. For instance, 1984 by George Orwell focuses on a theme of individual vs. society. George Orwell described his book as a dystopian society where oligarch succeeded, people are brainwashed, and civilians are not allowed to think for themselves. This setting is for a perfect hero type story, so Orwell introduces Winston, the main character whose main objective is to destroy the oligarchy and make the world a better place.

The novel 1984 is a futuristic totalitarian society where everyone is kept under close surveillance and is forced to follow all rules and laws of the state. The novel 1984 was written by George Orwell and published in 1950. The main characters were Big Brother, Winston Smith, Julia, O’Brien, Syme and Emmanuel Goldstein. Winston Smith is a low man on the totem pole when it came to the ruling Party in London, Oceania. His every move is watched by the Party through devices called telescreens. Posted everywhere around the city is the face of their leader, “Big Brother” informing them that he is always watching. He works in the “Ministry of Truth” which is ironic seeing that they alter history to fit the liking of the Party. As this book continues Winston challenged the laws and skirts around the fact that he is always being watched. His shocking and rebellious act is “falling in love.” Throughout this novel George Orwell utilizes symbolism to further enhance the totalitarian features of the society. In many ways these symbols represent the things that this society hasn’t experienced and doesn’t understand.
Throughout history, various countries have been under intense government ruling where the citizens are given little freedom and lack privacy. During the Soviet Era, Russian citizens experienced an oppressing lifestyle where their paranoid leader, Joseph Stalin, enforced various laws which limited the liberties of the people. For the people of Oceania in the novel 1984 by George Orwell, Big Brother is their manipulating leader who controls every aspect of their lives. This novel, written in 1949, was based on the futuristic idea that one day, people of this world would have little to no freedom because the government would possess too much power. Unfortunately, this strategy of regime has become a reality in some countries around the world. In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, there are clear connections between the Ministry of Truth and the modern day government in countries including North and South Korea.
