9/11…A Turning Point There have been many turning points in American history; however none have had the same effects as September 11, 2001, and many people relate the day to the country’s loss of innocence. As a result of 9/11 many civil liberties were taken away, security was heightened, and there have been numerous effects on Americans. Although the attack happened on American soil, it can really be characterized as an attack on civilization itself, because people from more than 80 nationalities perished on that day (Hitchens). An American’s civil liberties are among some of the most important rights awarded to a citizen. After 9/11 some of those liberties were taken away by the expansion of executive power, the National Security …show more content…
NRC). Anyone living in America felt there was an obvious need for heightened security following 9/11, and there is a good chance that these measures possibly halted further terrorist attacks. The aftermath of 9/11 affected many people across the country in different ways. The health of many that were near ground zero was negatively affected. There was a new found patriotism that arose from the despair, and people became more aware of their surroundings. As a result of the devastation brought on by 9/11, anyone within a reasonable distance of Ground Zero at the time of the towers’ collapse would have been exposed to the dust. The dust and debris contained numerous harmful chemicals which eventually led to health problems for those exposed to them. In addition, many concerned volunteers, contractors, and rescue workers were brought in from around the country to help in the recovery/clean-up effort at ground zero. These people were exposed to the fumes of smoldering fires as well as the dust, resulting in many health problems as well. Respiratory issues are among the most common, but many also suffer from mental trauma such as post traumatic stress disorder and depression (Geller). A good consequence
Terrorists attacks in America should not reduce or take away civil liberties because it unnecessarily increases government power, gives a false state of security, and goes against the concepts of liberty on which the United States was founded. In order to understand why these three things are important we must determine what are civil liberties.
September 11th, 2001 have affected and changed many Americans. After the “terrorist” (The reason why I have put terrorist in quotes because I believe that the 9/11 was an inside
On September 11, 2001 Flight Two planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. The planes where hijacked by 19 Al Qaeda terrorists that brought along their weapons , to many Americans the mention of 9/11 can be horrifying with the memories that they might have experienced that day with the site of the twin towers being brought down. Because of the hijacked planes, it destroyed many lives as well as the families that lost someone in that tragedy. The United States has changed since September 11th, 2001 because after new changes in airport security was made, deportation rose, and immigration decreased.
The September 11th attacks also brought among United States citizens, their patriotism and volunteerism. Bringing everyone together as a whole and opened people’s helping out wherever they could. Volunteering to help find people,
The events of 911 changed America culturally in multiple ways. It also brought American people in the light of a new threat, terrorism. This changed America’s outlook drastic. On September, 11, 2001,multiple Al Qaeda terrorists boarded three passenger planes and then hijacked the planes and carried out suicide attacks against the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, DC., killing everyone on board the planes and nearly 3,000 people on the ground. A fourth plane crashed into a Pennsylvania field, after passengers and crew attempted to take control from the hijackers. These attacks were symbolic attacks against the United States and its people. Not only had it been a psychological attack, it was the first attack in a long time that it happened on US soil. The terrorists were also making symbolic attacks
Civil Liberties Today, is an article from The New York Times and is dedicated to displaying the numerous security measures that were implemented after the attacks on September 11, 2001. The article brings up the alarm many Americans today have regarding their own personal privacy. It also references the numerous threats the new laws have put on the basic civil liberties of all people. The text goes in depth on these laws and reminds us that they were implemented for one purpose only: to lower the risk of terrorism in the United States.
It contributed to health issues and illnesses. Many people died just of the toxic dust. 2,606 people died from the Twin Tower attack, and victims who died from the attack both in the building and the toxic dust were included in the memorial. The attack had a big economic impact on the country and the world market. In New York, about 430 000 job-months and 2.8 billion dollars lost. The culture of America is noted for heightened security and anxiety regarding future terrorist attacks. There has been an increased amount of anxiety in commercial air traffic. After the attacks, many governments across the world have made laws to fight terrorism.
Civil Liberties is defined as “the freedom of a citizen to exercise customary rights, as of speech or assembly, without unwarranted or arbitrary interference by the government” (Merriam-Webster) but as time went by, people began to question whether or not civilians civil liberties have been compromised by the government. From Martin Luther King to Children in Long Island being taken, America’s civil liberties . The times may have changed but the people’s civil rights have to but not all have been resolved from Black Lives Matter, Women’s Rights, and the Crisis of Wars and these are the problems we must come to face.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was a huge cause in this horrific disaster. People who were around or worked the clean-up of the Twin Towers, have a higher risk of getting PTSD. That is more than four times as many as the general population. Workers who worked or people who had been around the disaster have a 19% higher risk of getting cancer. The National Institute for Occupational Safety Program found out that they had found fifty different types of cancer including all pediatric cancers, leukemia, bladder, rectum, colon, thyroid, stomach, esophagus, larynx, ovary, and breast and lung cancer. 1 in 10 rescuers have an onset asthma within 6 years of 9/11. People who had been around the disaster have an aftermath of fear, helplessness, and horror. Most people around the attack showed some stress but that usually goes away after about a week but some people even have stress symptoms years after the attack. People with these symptoms can seek help if it becomes unbearable. The amount of stress can also cause people to increase the risk of using alcohol and drugs. A couple of other mental health disorders are Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Depression is one of the big side effects on people after 9/11. Depression is usually found in people that witnessed or those who helped the clean-up with or without PTSD.
The United States experienced a major turning point after the 9/11 attacks in 2001. 19 members of an Islamic extremist group of terrorists, Al Qaeda, hijacked four airplanes on what seemed to be a regular Tuesday morning for most Americans. The tragic events began at 8:46 AM when New York City’s north tower of the World Trade Center took a tremendous hit from American Airlines flight 11. Within 17 minutes of the first attack, which was assumed to be an accident to citizens, flight 175 of United Airlines pummeled into the south tower (Bergen, 2016). With a death toll/total of over 2,750, the New York attacks created chaos and apprehension throughout the country. With the whole nation watching, a third airplane drove straight into the Pentagon
"Just a couple of years before the 9/11 attack a group of terrorist were arrested and their motto was, The season is coming, and bodies will pile up in sacks" ( The 9/11 Commission Report 17). Many people all around the world were shocked at the unfolding event, whether they heard it from the news, television or the radio. In the following days after the attack, parents and guardians did not want their children to go to schools because they were being racist and scared. Some even wanted schools to kick all Middle Eastern students out of school for the safety of their children. There were many people, who feared for their loved ones especially those who were near the effected areas, due to the lack of communication. 9/11 is one of the most tragic recent events in the history of the United States of America. Due to 9/11 the United States has increased its airports security and was one of the leading causes to the invasion of Afghanistan to find the leader of the terrorist group that was responsible.
It wasn’t really a turning point in my life. However, it touched me, as everyone in the world. September 11, 2001was a great tragedy for the whole world. I was too young then to understand it then. Thus, now I see the effects. First things first – the causes.
There has been several psychological and chronic health effects associated with the exposure to the World Trade Center disaster and its repercussion. People who were exposed to fumes, smoke and dust produced during the tragedy and subsequent recovery, clean-up and rescue activities have shown increased risk of respiratory diseases such as asthma (Jordan et al., 2011). Furthermore, psychological trauma as a result of the tragedy is connected with an increased risk of severe psychological distress and post-traumatic disorder. Additionally, individuals who were directly exposed to the disaster are at high risk for pre-mature death as a result of worsening of the prior respiratory disorders and new-onset of respiratory illnesses as well as due to complications brought about by psychological disorders such as substance abuse. Mortality data identifies 790 deaths having occurred between study enrollment and 31st December 2009 (Jordan et al., 2011). There were 156 deaths amongst the rescue and recovery participants while 634 arose from no-recovery and non-rescue participants (Jordan et al., 2011). As of 16th August 2002, a total of 2, 726 deaths certificates had been filed related to World Trade Center attack (CDC, 2002; b).
September 11, 2001 a day that will live infamous in Americans hearts forever. A day which took thousands of innocent American lives. The attackers also took two buildings that were iconic in the New York skyline, towers that were so advanced for their time. Towers that had a whole terrorist organization devoted to taking them out. Terrorist that hated everything that America stood for so much that they wanted to take it over. An American President and government agencies that missed way to many signs to prevent the attacks from happening. After all these things the American public joined together around the idea of patriotism to help a city rebuild. When that started they started assessing things on Capitol Hill, assessing that led to new
After the attacks on 9/11 our country has been forced to confront the issue of terrorism. The war on terrorism has ignited a war on our civil liberties. Our civil liberties have been affected by the passing of the Patriot Act, the violation of privacy, and an increase in racial profiling.
