In reading your Discussion reply, I know that life can be hectic at times; however, I believe reading is fundamental and we are reading even when we are unaware that we are reading. For example, when we are searching for items in the grocery store we must read signs and content on the package details. I use to purchase a newspaper faithfully every Sunday to enhance my reading skills. However, now oppose to utilizing the computer just for social media I read the news. The online text consist of the local new and international news as well. Reading keeps me sharp and always implying critical thinking as you stated food for one’s mind. I will read as I am bathing. It allows me to escape on a mini adventure and I can often sympathize or take on the roles of the characters when reading various books.
The article The Death of Reading is Threatening the Soul by Philip Yancey focuses on how many people are no longer “deep reading” and instead are reading “fewer of the [types] of books that require hard work” (Yancey 1). This is because the brain experiences a dopamine rush that occurs “when we learn something quick and new” (Yancey 2). Yancey agrees with many other intelligent, well-known people who stress the need to read many books or book pages daily. He adds that they acknowledge that it’s “beyond reach for [everyone] but [a] few people” so there’s no reason not to partake in the goal, especially since it is extremely beneficial (Yancey 3). Yancey describes reading lots of books has helped unleash his creativity and diminish his writer’s
Reading expands your vocabulary and knowledge. When I was reading my book, the Crossover, there were new words and their definition throughout the book. I learned so many new words like, patellar tendinitis which is also known as jumpers’ knee, an injury to the tendon connecting your kneecap (patella) to your shinbone. Joseph Addison said “reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body,” I think that quote is very true; we need to read in order to keep our minds going. If we don’t read during the summer, our vocabulary could shrink, and it is more likely kids will struggle at the beginning of the school
At this point in my life I find myself in an interesting predicament regarding my attitudes toward reading and writing; more so towards reading. Years ago I used to love reading books for pleasure but nowadays I find myself reading things that little to no effort to digest. This includes the very basic posts on facebook expressing one’s opinion on something or articles and threads on reddit discussing topics I find intriguing. Perhaps it’s the severe senioritis that has overcome me as I enter my last semester at Chapman University. As I’ve gotten lazier I can see it start to reflect in my everyday life. Deep down I still love to read but I rarely find myself getting truly invested into the action unless it relates to something I am very
Growing up in working class family, my mom worked all the time for the living of a big family with five kids, and my dad was in re-education camp because of his association with U.S. government before 1975. My grandma was my primary guardian. “Go to study, go to read your books, read anything you like to read if you want to have a better life,” my grandma kept bouncing that phrase in my childhood. It becomes the sole rule for me to have better future. I become curious and wonder what the inside of reading and write can make my life difference. In my old days, there was no computer, no laptop, no phone…etc, to play or to spend time with, other than books. I had no other choice than read, and read and tended to dig
I disagree with Lauren Slater’s theory that throughout a person's life, one will only surround themselves with ideas and people similar to their own because, it is easy to see that people enjoy controversy and over the course of our lives, our beliefs and ideas can change.
A Child Called It, is an astonishingly horrific true story of “one child’s courage to survive”. Once said “Such a story cannot fail to move.” this is exactly how I felt about this book. Dave Pelzer the author and protagonist of A Child Called It tells the story of his life as one of the worst seen cases of child abuse in the state of California. Dave’s mental strength and resilience is what truly drives the theme of the story and the physical and mental abuse that he had to endure.
I love to read and I read for pleasure and for ideas and quotes for my students. I use some strategies in “Feeding Your Head”, I can make it more meaningful to my creative process by having a purpose before I read. I usually read and figure out how to use knowledge of what I have read. If I start with a purpose in mind I can get more out of the books to become a creative thinker.
In the two books filled with kids being brutally abused. ¨A Child Called It” By Dave Pelzer is a real story written by the Dave Pelzer that takes the readers throughout his childhood. When he was a young kid he was brutally abused and starved by his mom. Throughout the book, it becomes worse with many life-threatening events. The author Dave Pelzer teaches the readers that child abuse is horrible for young kids. In¨Beaten¨ By Suzanne Weyn takes place in high school where a “Dream highschool couple” turns out to not be so good. The two main characters ty and keah get into a fight causing ty to become arrested for assault, and causes lots of drama. One lesson in this book is what you see is what you do, jealousy can cause abuse.
Despite me disliking reading and writing, these past 3 semesters of college I have done more reading than I did my entire high school career. At times when reading, I will find myself reading the same paragraph five times because I keep distracting myself while reading. This also led to me not understanding the text. I had to find ways to read more efficiently. I researched ways to improve reading skills. While researching, the technique that helped most was highlighting important points in my readings. I have not reread a single paragraph out of being distracted since. I also find it much easy to understand and follow text by reading summaries prior. I may not excel in reading and writing but I am much more proficient in it. Being literate in reading and writing has helped me become more literate in many other areas in
A long time ago there was this little girl who’s name was Shelby. She was a very bright younglady, but was scared of the school bully. The bully would torment her day in and day out. One day Shelby decided that enough was enough and told on the bully. He got in trouble and never bullied anyone again. Only because little Shelby showed courage to stand up against her fear. A Child Called “It” is a story similar to this one and relates to the quote, “ I've learned that the fear limits you and your vision. It serves as blinders to what may be just a few steps down the road for you. The journey is valuable, but believing in your talents, your abilities, and your self-worth can empower you to walk down an even brighter path. Transforming fear into freedom, how great is that?” in many different ways.
Remember the Name” (Radio Edit) is a song very similar to my life. Not only does this show my love of hip-hop and rap music, but it represents me as a person. The chorus line that repeats throughout the song, “This is 10% luck, 20% skill, 15% concentrated power of will, 5% pleasure, 50% pain, and 100% reason to remember the name...” represents how hard I have to work in school and sports, especially lacrosse and water polo throughout my everyday life. Another quote, “He doesn’t need his name up in lights, he just wants to be heard whether it’s the beat of the mic, he feels so unlike everyone else, alone, in spite of the fact people still think they know him. But no, he knows the code, it’s not about the salary, it’s about reality makin’ some noise, makin’ the story…” resembles what I work for.
(Attention Getter) Reading is a hobby that many of us can or already do enjoy, but what if I told you that the benefits of reading can stretch far beyond a little ease-of-mind? (Thesis): Some claim that readers will be able to enjoy a notably longer life than those who do not read. (Relevance): Out of the lazing pastimes that we occupy our little free-time with, very few of them have such a considerable, long-term effects as these claims
