I have always enjoyed the outdoors, I had no Idea what I was in for. One day while I was at work the opportunity arose for me to go to Iceland. At first I didn’t get too excited about because so much can change on an opportunity such as this. You never really know until you are actually airborne and enroute, sometimes that is still not enough. Once I made the final list to go, my coworkers began telling about their previous trips to this island. I heard one story of what it was like during the winter, different colored ropes between the buildings. Say you wanted to go from the dormitory to the dining facility, you would follow the “yellow” rope. This was due to wind and snow, you could become disoriented just walking between the buildings. Thankfully I would be going during the summer. I could not be more excited to explore this island in the North Atlantic, the land of ice and fire, called Iceland. Upon my arrival, I remember noting the buildings had different colored roofs, not just different shades of gray or brown, typically as you would find on a shingled roof, but they were all metal roofs. They could be blue, red, orange it was almost as if it was a cartoon. Keeping in mind, I was not here on vacation so my time to explore would be limited at best. But hopefully I will be able to make the most of it. So the week belonged to “Uncle Sam” and his bidding and the weekends, if all went right would be mine to explore, and explore I did.
Each weekend was
The Encounters in Early Societies in the Americas and Oceania were very fascinating encounters. These encounters of early societies in the Americas and Oceania were quite similar to the ones in Africa and Eurasia. Geography also played an important role in these early societies. A few topics I will address are: in what ways were the societies of the Americas and Oceania similar to those in Africa and Eurasia in spite of such isolation. The factors in which contributed to the difficulties in sustaining log distant trade of the societies in America and Oceania with neighboring societies. The last topic I will address is what the existence of such interactions despite such
After the Romans left Britain in AD 410 Anglo-Saxons started to occupy the land, and the Angles settled down in East Anglia, the Midlands, and the North. (Wales, 2006, p. 34) In the seventh and eight centuries, Britain was divided into seven kingdoms from which Northumbria was the most powerful. Later this kingdom lost its authority and status as the power started to concentrate around southern kingdoms. (Barber, Beal & Shaw, 2009, p. 108)
The Norse tale of Ragnarok presents an interesting example of apocalyptic literature by providing both an end and a unique beginning. The world which rises from the cosmic rubble seems to be essentially equivalent to that which the apocalypse destroyed, possessing the same creatures, features and Gods of times past. This considered, and by incorporating themes of time and fate, Snorri challenges the concepts of the past, present and future of Norse lore by providing a framework which allows for the potential reiteration of history. By reviewing The Prose Edda’s telling of the events surrounding Ragnarok, the relationship between fate, time and history provide a unique alternative to the standard eschatological timeline.
burn and pillage their way across civilized Europe. During this period much progress was achieved in terms of Scandinavian art and craftsmanship, marine technology, exploration, and the development of commerce. It seems the Vikings did as much trading as they did
Australia and Everest, two different climates, locations, and ways of life, yet people come to both for breathtaking adventure. In sixth grade I found out my family was moving across the world to a city called Wollongong in Australia. Here my adventure began from going to an all girls school to hiking in the Grampians. Everest is a place only a few people want to tackle, but it leaves a memory for all who climb Everest no matter how old. A new adventure is what brings people to places whether it is a city in Australia or the top of the world. In Wollongong, I was scared to start my first day of a new school full of strangers with funny accents in a place I had only dreamed of. My dream and my desire to explore new places came true, and now I have the key to unlock my new adventures. Those people dreamed of climbing Everest and did unlock an exciting but scary truth. I was a girl scared to go
The word Viking in the Webster’s Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language says that the word Viking means the following. “Vi•king 1. any of the Scandinavian pirates who plunder the coasts of Europe from the 8th to 10th centuries. 2. a sea-roving bandit: pirate. 3. a Scandinavian. 4. U.S. Aerospace. One of a series of space probes that obtained scientific information about Mars.” (1)
The Norse people were a very complex group who were portrayed as savages and killers, but instead were an advanced group, skilled workers and very democratic and this can be seen through their gods, goddesses, and rituals. Could it be that the way that people describe a civilization for so long change the way that people see them? Throughout history the Norse people have been portrayed poorly while in reality they are not completely the way that they are described to be. Not only are they polytheism, believing in multiple gods, but they act very much like their gods.
YORK – After an 8-0 shutout win over Peru State Sunday, the York university Panthers softball group couldn’t preserve the confident momentum rolling Wednesday as it dropped a two-recreation residence sequence to the Bethany (Kan.) tuition Swedes at Miller Park.
Welcome to Grecho, a city found in Norway just by the Oslofjord, and where technology and nature coexist. The Gulf of Mexico brings in warm water making Grecho much milder than where its latitude will demand. The summer temperatures can range from 51 - 69.8° F, but during spring, maximum temperatures don’t go past 60.8° F. Winter is somewhat drier than summer, lasting from November to March, and temperatures can even go below 19.8° F. Although it stays at a pretty warm temperature throughout summer and spring, people like to come during winter the most. Skiing, ice skating, and snowboarding is what we’re all about during the winter time. Grecho is geographically situated at the top of Oslofjord. Our city is inclosed by protected forests and mountains. The highest mountain situated within our city limits is the Kirkeberg (629 meters). Two thirds of our city is covered in protected forests, hills, and lakes, making it a great place to tour and travel through. The climate and geography in Grecho is quite favorable, but you haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen our unique features and innovations.
The group were shown a lot of pictures amazing pictures from old rundown buildings the first one we saw regarding America was the very first Hershey chocolate plant. It looked old and rundown there was dust everywhere and even holes in walls but to my surprise there was still a lot of machines there.
Once Erik arrived in Greenland, he found that it had many fjords and green fields, but it was also summer. He returned to Iceland and was able to convince about 500 people to start a colony. The colonists went in 25 boats but only 14 made it to Greenland. Erik as the chieftain ruled the settlement. The settlers farmed as they had in Iceland. There was not much wood around the settlement so the houses were made of dirt and were stronger than the ones of Iceland. The book, Dwellings of the Saga Time in Iceland, Greenland, and Vineland by Cornelia Horsford, describes the location of the houses as, “As in Iceland, these farmsteads were situated on the shores of rivers and fjords.” The reason for it being close to water was so the settlers
TRANSITION STATEMENT: Iceland’s beautiful geography gives way to incredible activities for both locals and tourists to do. (Maddie)
If I had a plane ticket, I would travel to Iceland. Iceland is “the land of fire and ice”. The opportunity for photography and film would be indescribable, from the history to the scenery. Iceland is known for being one of the happiest countries in the world. The glaciers, black sand beaches, waterfalls, geysers, hot springs, and caves. The mountains falling into volcano’s and the countryside, it is so beautiful. In Iceland, the Icelandic’s are big believer’s in elves, trolls or fairies. They believe they live in the rocky areas. Apparently in 1991, an Elf School in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, opened the first Elf School where they have had 9000 elves attend. Road projects are delayed because of the belief of hidden elves. Proof Iceland
Iceland is an alternate one of a kind destination for an occasion. It is the place that is known for different disagreements where the sun shows up around evening time in the mid year and the North Post Aurora lights the sky in the winter. On the off chance that you are searching for a divergent trip, sort out your next excursion in
