There is a funny Garfield cartoon that depicts one of many American realities about coffee, “I’m still a sleepy head, after 1 cup of coffee, To really wake up! I need at least 3 cups of coffee, and to really Rise and shine I need way too many cups”.
In the United States specialty coffee sales have reached the multibillion dollar level and are increasing on an annual basis. (Coffee Universe, 2011). This is one of the reasons why there is such a great market for coffee houses, coffee baristas, coffee mugs, coffee makers, and coffee companies like Starbucks.
Starbucks not only sell coffee in their top notch coffee houses but also distribute it. Starbucks has a reputation of providing their customers with the best coffee bean available and in order to get such a high grade bean they help the coffee bean plantation owners to improve their business to provide a better quality coffee. Starbucks and coffee are an American staple.
The first Starbucks opened in 1971 with a simple goal to sell good hot beverages, its original name was “Starbucks Coffee, Tea, and Spices”. Back then, the company was a single store in Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market. From just a narrow storefront, Starbucks offered some of the world’s fines fresh-roasted whole bean coffees. The name, inspired by Moby Dick, evoked the romance of high seas and the seafaring tradition of the early coffee traders.

Although the consumer has since evolved from regular brewed coffee to a more sophisticated gourmet brew, the overall intake for coffee has relatively remained the same based on the Gallup polls. (Brown, 2015) The Starbucks Company has managed to change the pallet of the consumer by the type of coffee they distribute. Companies like Dairy Queen, McDonalds, and Dunkin Donuts have had a complete coffee menu makeover in hopes to keep pace and their customer base. (Cowan, 2014) (Company Profile, 2015) Since 2003 there has been a noted growth of coffee import to the United States (U.S.), regions such as New York, Miami, New Orleans, Houston, and San Francisco have become major ports on handling imported coffee. The United States have increased their secondary countries in Latin and Central America in order to meet the demands of coffee beans here in the U.S. (Plume, 2003)
The picture may seem familiar. Tumbling out of bed and stumbling around in the kitchen-you begin your day. But wait. It cannot begin properly without that daily ritual, the morning cup of coffee. The aroma swirls throughout the room. What can compare to the richness and fullness of that first cup of coffee?
Imaging if there was no more coffee in this world, how would you feel? Nowadays, coffee becomes an important part of people’s life. People who often work overtime, they drink coffee because caffeine can make you awake; people who have to wake up early in the morning, they drink coffee because instead of making breakfast, coffee is more convenient; people drink coffee during the free time, because it also tastes good.
Bob Thompson, a professor of popular culture at Syracuse University, once said “You could say this nation runs on two dark liquids – petroleum and coffee”, in reference to the importance of coffee in the United States (Fernau). Personally I consume coffee nearly every day, typically in the mornings before my first class of the day. The University of Pittsburgh has coffee shops in nearly every major university building and provides students with a variety of meal plans that include coffee in it. My consumption of coffee is both for its pleasing taste and for its caffeine – which I rely on to be “awake” for my morning lectures and labs. Despite, my love of the taste of coffee I rarely ever drink it when I don’t have work to do. Coffee begins my process of doing work.

Who doesn’t love that smooth, creamy, chocolaty taste, and the bitter bite. And then…that wonderful aroma. It’s easy to fall in love will all the elements of coffee, and I definitely formed a habit.
