A Comparison Between Accreditation and Certification in Genealogical Research In the process of becoming a certified or an accredited genealogist there are some differences to consider. The two organizational bodies of discussion will be the International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogist or ICAPGen, and the Board for Certification of Genealogist or BCG. These organizations are the only ones capable of assigning the title of professional to the recipient. The credentialing process for both is extensive. There are some distinct differences in the processes which will be outlined here starting with ICAPGen. There is a three-step process in becoming accredited. The first step is to complete a questionnaire, …show more content…
The main difference is that BCG requires a seven-part portfolio. Like ICAPGen, you have one year from the time you apply to the deadline for turning in your project. For the kinship-determination portion of your portfolio, you can begin with anyone except yourself or your siblings. You may include living persons only if their permission is expressly granted and included in the portfolio. In other words, you will be required to do a fresh client report for a line, which you are not related to. Additionally, the BCG prefers original records not compiled sources. Another significant difference in the credentialing process is that the BCG portfolio doesn’t have you focus on a specific region that you want to specialize in. There are no timed tests in acquiring the certification, but your portfolio must meet the Genealogy Standard. BCG encourages applicants to prepare by attending lectures, getting further education though classes, or joining online study groups. The disadvantage a certification from BCG for me is the lack of support during the …show more content…
In the interim I plan to look at the requirements for the four-generation project. Which of my lines could fit that requirement? Goal one, find and choose a family line that would met that requirement. Second short-term goal is to watch the videos on the ICAPGen website. This will help me review the things I have already learned. Next, I have two long-term goals. The first is to finish taking all the classes to earn my AAS in Family History Research. My second long-term goal is to begin creating a presentation with a PowerPoint on some aspect of research such as finding original records verses
This semester, you will have the opportunity to construct a family genogram for informational purposes. You will develop a genogram, documenting information from both sides of your family (maternal and paternal) for 4 generations starting with yourself. The genogram may be hand drawn or you may use a computer drawn one. (You can download a basic program from www.genopro.com/free or from http://www.progenygenetics.com/students/ ) Your
As I embarked on this assignment I was unsure how to begin and what stories to tell. I did not know if I should commence with how my family came to America, my family tree, or a fascinating story about how my grandparents met. In order to complete this assignment I convened with my grandfather, Earl W. Stafford Sr., who knows a lot about our family history, to learn as much as I could.
To start my family origin paper we have to go way back to 1976 when my parents met in Alamo, North Dakota; a town of about 200 people in the northwestern part of the state. They met while going through school playing sports, mainly basketball. Both were pretty good at the sport and won some awards and had chances to play more but decided to get married and start a family instead. Both grew up around the whole farming scene. My mom actually lived on a farm growing up and also as she started her own family. My dad lived in the small town but his grandpa had a farm not far from where he grew up and also helped a lot of the local

Origins of a family have meaning and history. By keeping track of family relations also known as a family tree it can allow us to keep records of the past. The Edwards family tree shows great record from the early 1700 's to the mid 1800 's. This family tree demonstrates when a person was baptized; when they got married; and when they passed away. The Edwards family chart show the different relations of marriages and fertility rate from today 's society. I was looking forward to completing this assignments, as I was able to connect with family members and gain a better understanding more of how my heritage and culture has helped to shape my career development. I did not find difficulties constructing my genogram until having to document my grandparents careers. Growing up, I knew that my grandparents owned farms because I spend a considerable amount of time playing on the expanse of land. However, I began to realized that I was not sure if that had always been their occupation. I did have to call my father to get a bit more information about my grandparents and their occupations. I was not far off from what I believed to be true. However, I did realized that both of my grandmothers were homemakers until my aunts and uncles were school aged.
The committee reviewed the current procedure when a provider indicates no hospital privileges or board certification. The current process has the credentialing specialist follow-up with a provider until a response is received regarding 1) “No” response to board certification; 2) no answer to either board certification or hospital privileges; and 3) Admission process for providers with no hospital privileges. If no response is received, “NA” will be placed on the log and indication that an attempt was made to obtain information but no response received will
