A Comparison Between Accreditation and Certification in Genealogical Research In the process of becoming a certified or an accredited genealogist there are some differences to consider. The two organizational bodies of discussion will be the International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogist or ICAPGen, and the Board for Certification of Genealogist or BCG. These organizations are the only ones capable of assigning the title of professional to the recipient. The credentialing process for both is extensive. The main difference is that BCG requires a seven-part portfolio. Like ICAPGen, you have one year from the time you apply to the deadline for turning in your project. For the kinship-determination portion of your portfolio, you can begin with anyone except yourself or your siblings. You may include living persons only if their permission is expressly granted and included in the portfolio. In other words, you will be required to do a fresh client report for a line, which you are not related to. Additionally, the BCG prefers original records not compiled sources. Another significant difference in the credentialing process is that the BCG portfolio doesn’t have you focus on a specific region that you want to specialize in. There are no timed tests in acquiring the certification, but your portfolio must meet the Genealogy Standard. BCG encourages applicants to prepare by attending lectures, getting further education though classes, or joining online study groups. In the interim I plan to look at the requirements for the four-generation project. Which of my lines could fit that requirement? Goal one, find and choose a family line that would met that requirement. Second short-term goal is to watch the videos on the ICAPGen website. This will help me review the things I have already learned. Next, I have two long-term goals. The first is to finish taking all the classes to earn my AAS in Family History Research. My second long-term goal is to begin creating a presentation with a PowerPoint on some aspect of research such as finding original records verses
