The transgender community is not a group that all of the sudden came to fruition this past year. However, the transgender community gains a significant amount of publicity from several events over the past year. For example, the nationally publicized coming out of Caitlin Jenner as transgender. Now, Caitlin
She takes pride in her well maintained home and cooking expertise. Her schedule is full of running her husband’s errands throughout the day and having the breakfast, lunch and dinner completed that he requests. She finished two years of college courses at a local community college and would love to finish gaining her degree in nursing. The client would love to finish school, but her husband tells her that a degree is unnecessary since she should only be relying on him. Her husband’s attitude makes her feel insufficient and does not feel like a positive role model for her daughters to look up to. The client’s self-esteem is very low and the only time she feels pretty or worthy is when her daughters tell her they love her. She is at a point in her life where her self-worth is nearly destroyed, a place she never would have imagined before marrying her husband.
Scholars have been critical of the medical establishment’s and state’s involvement in constructing and policing of transgender identity. These kinds of pressing issues have occupied the small existing literature. There is not much information and studying what is being done on transgender in traditional areas, family studies research, such as their dating behavior and formation of intimate relationships in adulthood. There is little research on the issues around being parents, their children’s experiences with having transgendered parents, as well as relationships in the family as a whole, and relationships in work and school.
American society today is not any different from the past, except today people are apt to discuss everything publicly on various social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram just to name a few. Transgender persons happen to be one of those subjects that have become the hot topic of the new normal. Nowadays there are blogs, tweets, and pictures posted online of people’s transition “coming out.” Like the past, society is still tough when it comes to judging each other. Although transgender might not have had a recognized community in the past, it is prevalent that society is becoming more accepting of their community, and aware of issues their community faces. In this essay the names, nouns, or pronouns used will be in accordance to the individual’s preference.
When people want to be theirself, doesn 't everyone deserve that chance at that much freedom? According to the national LGBTQ Task Force transgender people are not that lucky when it comes to the demographics of social media. On CNN website there 's an article that discusses how transgender people are twice as likely to be unemployed and four times more likely to live in poverty compared with the general population and these disparities are much greater for transgender black and latina woman said Emanuela Grinberg writer for CNN.
Kidd and Witten define the term transgender vaguely, stating it “describe[s] people who transcend the conventional boundaries of gender, irrespective of physical status or sexual orientation” (Kidd & Witten, 2007, p. 36). This term is a reference for the ‘other gender’ that is not particularly male or female. Currently, within the American society, there is a growing awareness of individuals who are transgender. Much of this awareness comes from LGBT movements and
The United States is a divided society. We like to categorize ourselves according to political affiliation, race, and religion. We are members of the middle, low-income, or wealthy classes. We choose what seats to sit in during a football game according to the team we are rooting for. It is oddly comforting to know that you belong. All too often, however, transgender youth are denied that sense of ubelonging because they defy society’s categories of male and female. The gender binary divides society into two separate, unequivocal categories that marginalizes transgender youth and directly impacts their emotional health and well-being. Society’s collective response of demeaning, shaming, and violence further increases the divide.
Transgender issues cover a a multitude of spheres: discrimination (at school, in the workplace, when looking for housing), violence, suicide, and identification through legal documents to name a few. Transgender individuals deal with greater struggles than that of cisgender individuals, or those who identity as the gender which they were assigned at birth. Perhaps one of the greatest struggles transgender individuals have to deal with is acceptance, whether it be acceptance from others or acceptance of themselves. Cisgender individuals, or those who identify with the gender identity given at birth, do not have to worry that their gender identity will be accepted; society has already dictated it to be ‘normal’ and ‘acceptable’ (“Definitions of Terms”). Trans individuals are not afforded this luxury.
Stories involving transgender people have been in newspapers, magazines, and tabloids for over fifty five years. These stories have captivated and intrigued American culture from the start, but not always in the most positive light. It began in 1955 when Christine Jorgensen, born George, publicly announced her gender confirming surgery and began life as a legally recognized woman. There was a media frenzy with headlines such as “Bronx GI Becomes a Woman!” and “Bronx ‘Boy’ Is Now A Girl”. But instead of “withdraw[ing] from public attention [Christine] turned the notoriety to her advantage with a series of lucrative tours on the lecture and nightclub circuit” (McQuiston 1989). “By cultivating the demeanor of a lady and refusing to call herself
Within the past couple of years, LGBT issues have been showing up more in our daily lives than ever before. Taking a closer look at the T in LGBT, there have been stories and articles about transgender individuals and this has triggered a large variety of emotions and opinions from people all over the world. Someone who is transgender is an individual who identifies as a gender that does not match the gender that is assigned to him or her at birth. One of the biggest stories that brought transgender individuals into the mainstream spotlight was the announcement that Bruce Jenner, an Olympic gold metal winner, is trans gender. This was broadcast to millions of people as he told his story in an emotional interview with Diane Sawyer. Laverne Cox, a transgender woman, has had a predominant role in the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black” for the past 3 seasons and has also helped spread awareness about the trans community. With all of these stories being seen by more and more people, there have been some that haven’t been very accepting of the transgender community. Transphobia can lead to aggression towards trans individuals, causing abuse that may cause physical and emotional damage. Trans individuals are being policed by not only society, but also by institutions.
Coming out as a transgender, identifying with a gender expression that differs from the assigned sex, has proven to be quite difficult through the ages. While the acceptance of transgender people has grown significantly higher throughout the years, people’s stance on them are still quite divided, and the uphill battle for transgender rights has proven this. Just giving transgenders the right to simply go to the bathroom they identify with has shown to be controversial according to the TIME cover Battle of the Bathroom. The TIME magazine makes sure to note the problem defiantly “far more than public facilities” (Scherer par. 9). Transgender rights are a problem that Jamison Green, president for World Professional Association for Transgender Health, thoroughly addresses in a report written by Alan Greenblatt for CQ Researcher. Jamison Green’s specific purpose in that report is to justify why transgender people deserve basic human rights like everybody else, as shown in society, through his use of facts, qualifiers, figurative language, counterarguments, and appeals to logic and values.
As the title of the article states, this report discusses the stigma towards the Transgender community and the results of intervention. Through out the article stigma, within our society, of transgender individuals is the main topic with emphasis on the effectiveness of intervention style approach to reduce prejudice overall. Transgender (TG) individuals experience widespread prejudice and discrimination and are at greater risk for associated adverse mental health outcomes relative to their gender-conforming peers (Institutes of Medicine, 2011).
In the past decade, the transgender community has grown an immense size, however with the growth in numbers, it leads to a tremendous amount of controversy and injustice surrounding the LGBT community. From the Human Rights Campaign resource article, “Understanding the Transgender Community,” the anonymous author goes over the background of transgender citizens in the United States and guides the reader through all the challenges they can potentially face in their everyday lives. The author’s purpose for this article was to give the audience, which is the general public and also the people who discriminate the LGBT community, an adequate amount of information about the social injustices the transgender community faces. Some main points that
This is mostly due to awareness being raised about trans people so that more people are able to find out what they are. These increased numbers may also be due to more people feeling like they can safely come out as trans since it is more easy for them now to find an accepting and supporting community. Trans people have probably always been around though. There is possible proof of several trans people in history. The first documented case we have of a possible Transgender person in history was King Hatshepsut who was born female but took on the role of pharaoh in 1503 BC. Of course the Term ‘Transgender’ didn’t exist back then so there is no way to say for sure that Hatshepsut was Transgender but there is a lot of evidence pointing to this possibility. The biggest piece of evidence is that she referred to herself as king and wore the traditional male clothing and false beard of the pharaohs before
The social issue that I chose which affects society today is transgender inequality. These issues are more recently gaining attention and becoming a prevalent topic of inequality within our country. A transgender person is someone whose gender identity, gender expression or behavior does not conform to that typically associated with the sex to which they were assigned at birth. As more and more transgender people share their stories in the media, the social problems that arise from these stories are discrimination within their everyday lives. They suffer from scrutiny and judgment from their peers, and thus many hide their gender identity from family and society. This social injustice can be as simple as a glance or staring, or offensive comments and questions to violent hate crimes. Transgender people are prone to violence and harassment, and often not feeling safe in any aspect of society. They are fired from jobs, denied medical insurance, and being murdered left and right solely for being transgender. “A staggering 41% of respondents reported attempting suicide compared to 1.6% of the general population, with rates rising for those who lost a job due to bias (55%), were harassed/bullied in school (51%), had low household income, or were the victim of physical assault (61%) or sexual assault (64%)” (National Center for Transgender Equality). The structure of this paper will consist of adding all the research that was gathered over the semester, news articles and peer
Society has defined and applied gender roles through; gender socialization. In this process, all agents of society shape the outcome and performance of each gender. Lately, there has been much commotion surrounding bathroom policy for Transgender people. To begin this analysis, I have asked myself one essential question; “For those opposed of Transgender people using the bathroom they identify with, what is their main concern that drives them to be against them doing so.” After identifying this leading question, my next step was to research why Transgender people would want to use the bathroom in accordance to their identifiable gender. Even though that may seem like an obvious question, people who are for, and against this topic have contradictory answers. Those who are for, allowing transgendered people to use the bathroom that they find are appropriate to their identity, express that we can not discriminate against people who are expressing who they are. Amongst these people are also the ones that believe that cisgendered people have no right to determine policies placed against transgendered people. I use this as the basis to my research since I am a cisgendered male, who believes in one of these views. For reference, “transgender,” is defined as, “nothing or relating to a person whose gender identity does not correspond to that person’s biological sex assigned at birth.”[]
