Humanism is an idea which focuses on the importance of oneself, rather than the importance of divine or supernatural matters. Humanism is often mistaken for feminism which is one of the major controversies of A Doll House by Henrik Ibsen. The idea of humanism becomes apparent through Nora’s interactions with Torvald, Torvald’s interactions with Nora, and Torvald’s interactions with other characters in the play. Many argue that A Doll House, is a feminist play due to its portrayal of the characters which emphasized many values of feminism, but in actuality the play addresses views on the value of dignity in one’s character and the need for one’s identity to be found based on positive choices which defines humanism. Ibsen was able to develop the idea that A Doll House was a humanist play through the way characters made decisions within their lives, even though within the play there were related notions of feminism. Numerous individuals saw values of feminism within A Doll House, not only because of what the character, Nora, faced as a woman in society, but due to the social era of that time; woman felt they could relate to Nora’s struggles. Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll House is a socially important realistic play that portrays the gender dynamics that plagued the nineteenth century and questions the expectations held for women in a household and society. The original play is so accredited and well known that directors face a tough challenge of trying to reconstruct it in a memorable way. One director, Lee Breuer, attempted to do so in his Mabou Mines DollHouse production. Life is a play, everyone is a character playing a part putting on different masks so no one knows the true person inside. Dominated women are more likely to wear a mask in order to hide the horrible reality of a dark, oppressive world in which they live. This allows the women to maintain what little self-esteem they have left, while at the same time they are screaming on the inside yearning for freedom. A prime example of such a woman would be, Nora Helmer, in Henrik Ibsen’s play, “A Doll House,” she wears the mask of a submissive, loving, housewife but in reality she only wishes for freedom and independence. Her husband, Torvald is not an abusive man, although, he is controlling and treats her as a child, instead of an equal partner in the marriage. Throughout the play, Nora with the aid of Kristine and Dr. Rank, progresses into a more prevailing role which leads to her ultimate freedom when she leaves her husband and family. Henrik Ibsen created a very complex character with Nora Helmer, in one instance she is a loving, submissive housewife and the other she is a manipulative, dishonest person, where Torvald is controlling, but at the same time, devoted to his family and loves his wife dearly.

What might sacrifice mean? Is it important? Sacrifice can be defined as an act of immolating someone or something. Will one might think it depends on the person to decide on the importance of the sacrifice? In light of this play, “A Doll House” written realistically by Henrik Ibsen, he has portrayed many symbols throughout the play. One of the many symbols that stood out was sacrifice. Clothing also symbolized some importance in the play and the Tarantella dance as well. However, what exactly is a symbol? A symbol can be “a concrete object or a person/image that represents an abstract concept such as life, death, salvation, or hope.” For example, the dollhouse stated in the preface of the play symbolized “the dependent and dehumanized role of the wife within traditional middle-class marriages” (Ibsen, pg.1486). Including another example, stated by Nwabueze, “believed that Ibsen used the term ‘a doll’s house’ to represent Nora’s home” (Nwabueze, pg. 22). Additionally, anyone can “argue that Ibsen used Nora as a symbol for human rights” uniquely throughout the play too (Metzger, 1879). So again, symbolism can be seen vastly throughout the play.
In Henrik Ibsen’s "A Doll 's House” (March 20, 1828 - May 23, 1906) and “Oedipus the King”, by Sophocles (which is an Athenian tragedy performed 495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.) both have men who were destroyed by a secret which lead them to their horrible outcomes on life because of the conflicts in their relationships with their families although, both pieces of Literature were written many years apart from each other and in different areas of time. Two characters who share some of the same qualities are Oedipus from “Sophocles’” and Torvil from “A Doll’s House”. Oedipus and Torvils’s lives are somewhat similar because they both have happy families who have everything to lose, but have men in their family who carry both bad traits and are in well-respected positions. The families are torn apart by secrets and conflicts, which devastated their families and their lives. Oedipus’ and Torvils’ both share that they were the ones who were kept by the secret and had their lives destroyed because of it. The audience is aware of the secrets of these two written pieces before the character in the play, and the characters do not realize their lives will be very different after becoming aware of the secrets that their families have hidden from the characters. Secrets kept from a person in the family make a person’s personality, out to be both stubborn and quick to anger, but both lives and the lives of their families are shattered by a secret. What
The theme of power is expressed through the title of A Doll’s House, as when one plays with dolls he or she has complete control of what occurs. The relationship between a person and their doll is a direct act of subjugation, only the doll is not alive and has no choice in the matter. With the binary opposition of phylogeny versus misogyny present in the stage production, a question of the work is who is the one controlling the household. Ibsen had the character of Torvald believe he was in command of what occurred in the house; however he (Ibsen) provided more evidence that Nora was really the one who kept everything together. For example, Nora was speaking with Mrs. Linde that she obtained much needed money without consulting with Torvald first, as she lied to him saying it was given to them by her father. Mrs. Linde replied saying “a wife should not borrow without her husband’s consent” (Ibsen 88), meaning she had fallen into the belief that women are below men, which Ibsen is proved to be false in this play.
