In “A Good Man is Hard to Find” written by Flannery O’Connor, the grandmother, her son Bailey, his wife, and their three children are planning a trip to Florida. In an attempt to change the family's plans, the grandmother informs her family of an escaped convict, The Misfit, who is thought to be on his way to Florida as well. However, the next day, the family continues with their plans and leave for Florida. Unbeknownst to the family, the grandmother has hidden her cat in a bag in the back seat of the car. Even though she was told she could not take the cat with them on the trip, she decides to anyway. This conversation leads the grandmother to tell Red Sammy and his wife about the escaped convict, The Misfit, who is headed to Florida. The disturbing news worries Red Sammy's wife because she thinks they might be endangered of being robbed. When the family finishes their meal, they continue on their trip toward Florida. After waking from a nap, the grandmother realizes they are near an old plantation she used to visit years ago. She tries to talk her son into turning back to visit it, but he immediately refuses. So, the grandmother decides to describe to the children how great this plantation house is by fabricating the characteristics. Because of this, the kids begin to beg their father to turn back, so they can see the plantation. Bailey becomes angry with his mother for bringing this up but agrees to turn back to find the plantation. After they turn on the old, deserted dirt road leading toward the plantation and drive deep into the forest, the grandmother realizes the plantation she was thinking of is in Tennessee.
